TEST 2

SECTION 1

House Officer: Good morning, how can I help you?

Client: Good morning. Are you the agency for house-renting?

House Officer: That's fight. Are you interested in it?

Client: Yes.

House Officer: So let me take a record and get some details right now.

Client: Thank you.

House Officer: What name is it, sir?

Client: Frank Anderson.

House Officer: F-R-A-N-K A-N-D-E-R-S-O-N, right?

Client: Yes.

House Officer: And your phone number, Mr. Anderson?

Client: Umm ... 674 9328, but I'm only there after about 5 p.m.

House Officer: So when would be the best time to catch you?

Client: I suppose between 6-8 p.m.

House Officer: OK. Can I ask your requirements, for example, which area do you think you would prefer?

Client: Yes, better in the center (Q1) of the city. I think that must be more convenient. House Officer: And how long do you plan to rent? You know, according to the rules of our agency, the rent time should go up to half a year at least.

Client: That won't be a problem. My family is going to stay for at least two years

(Q2). And we may even get an extension if feeling good.

House Officer: Fine, we'll surely try to find the most suitable houses for you. And what is your expected price?

Client: I was thinking in terms of about ~500 a month, but I'd go up with 100

more (Q3) if it is something special.

House Officer: Got it. These houses in particular fit for your requirements perfectly. And

here is their information.

Client: Good. Well, I can't quite understand the notices here. Would you please

explain to me?

House Officer: Certainly. The first house is in the Cranston Street with four bedrooms, two balconies, a kitchen, a bathroom and a garage (Q4). What's more, it has a

large garden behind the house, somewhere you could sit and keep peaceful. Client: Umm, it's quite attractive to own a personal garage, but I probably waste

the large garden. I'm always too busy to clear up. I need to think it over.

House Officer: No problem. Let's move on to the next one. We still have more choices.

House Officer: This one lies on the Beasley Road, with three bedrooms, two balconies, a

kitchen and a bathroom--oh, no, I'm sorry there is no bathroom.

Client: Well. How is the environment? I need relatively quiet living conditions. Is it close to the main road?

House Officer: I'm afraid yes; it may be a bit noisy (Q5).

Client: Then what about this one on the same road with the above?

House Officer: This one may be more favorable for you. It belongs to a quiet community,

and includes whole set of house facilities. Three bedrooms, a balcony, a

kitchen, a bathroom and the special is a study (Q6).

Client: Sounds terrific. I am interested in it. How much is it?

House Officer: Let me have a look. I see,$ 620 each month. But since you would stay for

two years, we can have a discount and may reduce to $605 per month (Q7).

Is it a good price for you?

Client: Well. I need to talk with my family. $ 605 still exceeds my budget. Would

you please find a cheaper one if that's possible?

House Officer: Umm. What about this? It lies in the Silverton Street, with three bedrooms, two balconies, a kitchen and a bathroom. The community is off the road but

still very convenient. Beside the basic construction, it has a sports center with a swimming pool, a little museum (Q9), and a center hall. But you can

only enter the hall with a registration of membership. There used to be a

small cinema, too. While for certain factors, it was shut down last month.

Client: Oh, good. I like sports very much and I think this is exactly what I'm looking for. Then how much will it cost to rent?

House Officer: Let me check it. $ 565 each month, as you will rent for two years, then we

offer you a 90% discount. That's $508 (Q8) per month.

Client: It's a moderate price. OK, I'd like to take it. But when shall I have a look at

the house?

House officer: We will contact with the landlady soon. And when would you want it for? Client: I'd like to move in approximately two week.

House officer: I got it. Please wait for our reply within two days (Q10). I will call you in

your available time.

SECTION 2

Lecture:r

Bournemouth, a long-established tourist destination and Britain's premier seaside holiday

ort, is situated on the south coast of England and is less than two hours from London. urnemouth blends a traditional British seaside resort with a busy and thriving town. And our urnemouth University is also a modem and innovative institution (Q11) with six distinctive

lools of study.

At Boumemouth University we have a strong research capability. We enjoy a reputation for

r commitment to wide ranging opportunities through learning, research and enterprise. We are

e o

f the premier providers of higher education for the professions in the UK. Bournemouth tiversity consistently has one of the highest graduate employment rates in the UK (nearly 85% compared to national average of 74.3%--Higher Education Statistics Agency 2003/4). We are proud of our quality assurance record (Q12). The most recent teachin

g quality assessments have resulted in ratings of 'excellent" for courses in the areas of communication and media, business and management, catering and hospitality, archaeology and nursing and midwifery. Anyway that’s enoug

h sales talk from me. And then I'H say something about what actually happens when you apply.

Now, if you do decide to apply, what you do is send and the application process begins. Err... There's no need for you to worry if this process doesn't work all that quickly---occasion-

ally there are postal (Q13) problems, but most ot~en the hold-up is caused by references (Q14)- thepeople you give as referees. It will take much time to give a reply, generally, it's normal

for this process to take three to four months. So all that you should do during this period is just waiting and keeping in touch with us. We'd send message to inform you the processing status.

To help you get more information about our university, we've devised a guide project-

that is to put you in contact with, if possible, a student from your own country who is at present studying with us. This project is not only open to you before applying but also when you've been accepted. In this way, you can discuss your concerns directly with your countrymen, and easily get an objective opinion of what you can expect if you come to live and study at Boumemouth--academic atmosphere, the leisure facilities (Q15) life in the UK, further education (Q16) and so on

Now to move on to other concerns applying students usually hold.

Many students worry a lot about their level of spoken English. It's true that fluent spoken English will help make your stay with us that bit more fun for you. But don't be so anxious.Obviously most of you have already achieved a lot; you have passed the serious examination of both language and profession. If you really want to do something for improvement, taking some extra practice before you arrive (Q17) is worth much more than, for example private lessons afterwards. Be confident that you will easily get used to the English environment, that's just a problem of time.

There are also worries about the learning and living environment of a UK university-- as I'm sure you know--you will be in an environment where iodependent learning is the_norm {Q18), which takes most students a while to adjust to, and at a time when you will be separated from your normal surroundings and, in most cases, your family. This can be a difficult time, But remember that something like 25% of our student body are international students like you, and that there are several organizations in the university and city whose main purpose is to offer help and ensure that your time with us is enjoyable and useful.

Some students touched on the subject of accommodation earlier. Well, you can apply for accommodation when you have accepted an unconditional offer of a place to study at the university. All of accommodation available to our students are situated at the campus in the town centre and are close to shops and the travel interchange where you will find Bournemouth train and coach stations. But I'll just add a few points: it is the university’s policy to give priority_ in the allocation of residence places to three categories, and those are: visiting students, exchange students and new postgraduate students(Q19). However, demand exceeds supply, so there is still a need to put your name down early for campus accommodation. If you prefer to live outside the university, the Accommodation Service can render you great help, It will find private sector or home stay accommodation (Q20) in terms of your requirements. The option of staying with a local family is popular with many of our international students, who see it as an opportunity to improve their English and experience English culture and home life first hand.

SECTION 3

A: Oh. Lucky you are still here. Sorry I'm a bit late--I met a long jam on my way here. So, have you worked out how to deal with the assignment?

B: We also arrived here just a couple of minutes ago, so still haven't taken over the assign- ment yet. Since you join us, we can start now.

A: Would you please just remind me what the task is exactly?

C: Well, there are two, no, three parts of it: first, we've got to write an essay about ways of collecting data. Then ...

A: What's our task exactly?

B: Umm. We are required to compare the differences of data collecting ways (Q21), and then give an assessment (Q22) of them.

A: I see. Did our tutor give a limitation of how much we need to write?

B: Twenty hundred (Q23) words. That's for the essay. Then, for the second part of the assignment, we have to choose one method of data collection, and "carry out a small

scale study, making appropriate use of the method chosen to gather data from at least

five subjects".

A: And then we have to write a report on the study?

C: Yes. But it is necessarily more concrete. About three to four thousand (Q24) words.

A: Then, which method of data collection do you think may be better?

B: Mm, in my opinion, we should use a questionnaire. It would surely be a high-efficient

way. We just need to take much effort on its designing. And all left is to send it out and

wait for the responses. It'll be so much less time-consuming than organizing interviews.

A: That's the point. It probably would be quicker. But we may inevitably encounter with one problem--that is, the quality of data from questionnaires.

B: Yeah. That's right. Questionnaires are definitely a source of "highly reliable data".

But the only way to guarantee the high quality of data, is to design the questionnaire

properly in the first place (Q25).

A: That's for sure. But all of us are freshmen; do you have any idea of how to start?

C: Umm. Since we have decided the way of collecting data, we can refer to those books introducing the design of questionnaires.

B: I suppose so. We may get inspiration from other's examples.

A: But do you have any suggested books for me?

B: Well, I'm not sure about that.

C: Umm. Actually, I have got a book list of the social science survey from the library.

A: That's cool. Would you please give me a copy, now?

C: Sorry that I didn't bring it with me. But I can remember some of them. For example, "Sample Surveys (Q26) in Social Science Research".

B: Oh, I've heard about it. Is the author Murtha (Q27)?

C: Yeah. You can write his name downQMtU-R-T-H-A. And another book, called "Survey Research (Q28), is really worth reading. It is written by a new writer Bernalillo (Q29),

B-E-R-N-A-L-I-L-L-O and just published by the Social Science Press last September. If

you want details of the book list, you can follow me to my home.

A: I got it. Thank you. And now is 7 p.m., I still have to go to the library (Q30), looking for these books.

B: Oh, I am afraid today is not available. Sunday is the rest day.

SECTION 4

All around the edge of Africa--along the coastline, near the continents' ports--are monu- ments to exploitation. On the island of Goree, for example, just off the coast of Senegal, there's the Slave House. This was the last place many Africans saw before being shipped off (Q31) to a lifetime of slavery in the Americas or, just as often, to death on the high seas.

There are many more places like this dating from the three hundred and fifty years or so of the African slave trade. When people wonder why Africa is so poor, they need look no further for the start of an explanation.

The end of the slavery was followed by a century of colonialism. Some people argue that colonialism brought limited development--railways and schools and so on --the system was

principally designed to turn Africa into a vast plantaion and mining site for the profit of outsiders (Q32).

Of course, some Africans gained from this period. Chiefs (Q33) who sold their enemies to the European or Arab slavers, for example, and coastal people (Q33) who creamed a little off the colonial trade which flowed through their land.

But on the whole, for almost half a millennium, the general rule was systematic exploitation(Q34). This must , surely, be the basic reason why Africa is poor. You could add that the climate(Q35) is punishing, that tropical diseases (Q36) are rife, and that today’s independent African rulers (Q37) are far from perfect. All true. But these factors, powerful in recent decades, seem marginal when set against to the pattern that was set for centries.

The solution has been "aid (Q38)": emergency (Q39) aid, development aid, agricultural aid ,economic advices. Billions of dollars is worth of it. The problem with this solution is that, patently, it hasn't worked. On the whole, Africa has got poorer.

The failure hasn’t really been the idea of real aid but the misuse of that term (Q40).Clearly,if, in the famous phrase, you "teach a man to fish", you're probably helping him. But most aid hasn't been like that. Most of it has been "top-down" aid, money that's given to African governments do the political bidding of the aid givers. A good proportion of it has been creamed off by the recipient government's officials and another large chunk of it paid back to the so-called "donors" in consultancy fees, salaries-cars--houses-and-servants for aid officials, debt repayments and the purchasing of arms.

And yet, to say aid hasn't worked in the past is not the same thing as saying aid can't work. On the great scale of things, aid or more precisely the type of aid that's generally been in the past few decades hasn't worked. But a little of the right sort of aid, carefully directed and monitored, would be a lifeline for them. For example, if a few thousand dollars is spent on a borehole which is a lifeline to the precious water deep underground, those farmers who live on the plantation may receive great enhancement of their life quality.

The end.

NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS(三个字以内),当然有的时候是两个字或四个字以内,要看具体的题目要求。

Aha… u guys really owe me one.

同样以Cambridge8 Test2 Section3 21-24题为例,根据原文“they are infested with mites”、“Australia exports native Queen bees to a large number of countries because of this”、“we could lose a lot of money”,同学们可以在选项中找到相应的同义词“carry parasites”、“sold to customers abroad”、“the country’s economy”,从而找到正确答案。

House of Parliament,Tower of London,Sydney Opera House。 Ms. Dr. Professor the Chief Executive Officer 例如:I had dinner with Uncle Bill. I had dinner with my uncle. I went with Mother to the store. I went with my mother to the store. (不包括冠词;五个字母以下的介词,如:of,from; 不定式的to;部分连词,如:and,for,or等。) ?

例如1988年5月31日,是读成 thirty-first of May, 1988还是thirty-one of May, 1988呢?
