Feeling a bit bored with your job and fancy a change? Why not try one of these jobs out? They're probably not to everyone's taste, but believe it or not, these are actually real jobs done by real people.

Here are the top 5 weirdest jobs in the world:

1.Professional sleeper:

A hotel in Finland hired a member of staff as a 'professional sleeper' to test the comfort of their beds. The individual sleeps in a different one of the hotel beds each night and writes a

review about her satisfaction with each one.

2. Drying paint watcher:

No, this isn't a joke. Someone actually earns a living watching paint dry. A man in the UK currently has the job and he spends his days painting sheets of cardboard to test how long new paint mixes take to dry and watching for changes in color and texture.

3.Train Pusher:

If you think the London Underground is bad, you should see the trains in Japan. 'Oshiyas' are hired to help cram as many people onto a train as possible by pushing them from the outside until the doors will close.

4. Snake Milker:

Not for the light-hearted. The job of a snake milker is to collect the venom of poisonous snakes in jars for use in anti-venoms and other medication. Thank god someone's brave enough!

5.Scuba Diving Pizza Delivery Man:

If the fact that there's an underwater hotel in Florida isn't bizarre enough, to add on to that, they have a scuba diving pizza delivery man who supplies them with pizza by carrying them through the sea in a watertight case.

Do you do an unusual job? We'd love to hear about it, so let us know!

21. In which job is a job-seeker's strength a necessity?

A. Scuba Diving Pizza Delivery Man

B. Train Pusher

C. Professional sleeper

D. Snake Milker

22. Which job could not be your cup of tea if you were not brave enough?

A. Drying paint watcher

B. Train Pusher

C. Professional sleeper

D. Snake Milker

23. Which of the following is True according to the passage?

A. A hotel in Finland employed a member of staff as a 'professional sleeper' to test the quality of their beds.

B. A drying paint watcher spends his days painting sheets of cardboard and watching for changes in color just out of boredom.

C. It's bizarre that an underwater hotel in Florida has a man deliver pizza by carrying them through the sea in a watertight case.

The only proved lock of Jane Austen's hair was sold at Sotheby's in 1948. Attendees at the next Annual Meeting of the newly formed Jane Austen Society were expressing great sadness to the loss of this relic to an American when Alberta H. Burke rose to her feet. "I am the American who bought Jane's hair, and if the Society would like to have it I shall be glad to make a contribution of it.'"

The Society agreed, and the hair is now in the Jane Austen House at Chawton. But Mrs Burke's collection of Austen's letters and manuscripts(手稿)was donated to the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, combined with other letters purchased for the library.

Having kept the hair and lost the handwriting, English Janeites may cast envious glances towards New York, where an exhibition of letters and manuscripts, together with first and early illustrated editions of Austen's novels and other related material, currently occupies part of the Morgan. A good modern edition of Austen's letters was published by R. W. Chapman in 1932 and updated in 1952; in 1995, Deirdre Le Faye re-edited the collection for Oxford University Press. It represents a small fraction of Austen's output, estimated to have been around 3,000 letters, mostly written to her sister Cassandra.

As Virginia Woolf imagines their loss, "when Miss Cassandra Austen grew old, and the growth of her sister's fame made her suspect that a time might come when strangers would try to find out and scholars make guesses about, she burnt, at great cost to herself, every letter that could satisfy their curiosity, and spared only what she judged to be too unimportant to be of interest”. Even those that escaped have had lines removed by cutting. Nevertheless, much of

interest remains. Visitors may not read all seventeen letters on display. But those with the eyes to focus will be able to find evidence of Austen's sharp tongue, as when a neighbour's wife is discovered to be "everything that the Neighbourhood could wish her, silly and cross". We can see her sense of the ridiculous, her talent for skillful characterization and a writer's high spirits that rarely desert her for long.

24.Where can people see the only proved lock of Jane Austen's hair housed?

A. Sotheby

B. Alberta H. Burke's house

C. the Jane Austen House at Chawton

D. the Pierpont Morgan Library

25.Why may English Janeites cast envious glances towards New York?

A. Because a small fraction of Austen's output, estimated to have been around 3,000 letters, currently occupies part of the Morgan.

B. Because though her hair was kept in Britain, many other things left by Austen were in New York.

C. Because a good modern edition of Austen's letters was published in New York.

D. Because Deirdre Le Faye re-edited Austen's collection for the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York.

26.Which of the foll owing does the underlined word "relic” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

A. lock

B. hair

C. letter

D. manuscript

27.We can infer from the passage that________.

A. Miss Cassandra Austen made an attempt to maintain a good name for Austen.

B. Austen's work brought her sister much personal fame and many positive reviews..

C. A Janeite fan culture came into being during Austen's lifetime.

D. Austen's sister burned every letter and achieved her purpose.

Movie Extras

Would you mind lying in a coffin (棺材)? Would you shave your head? Are you willing to take out your false teeth?

These are just a few of the questions Anne Marie Stewart and her staff sometimes ask the "talent" who serve as non-speaking "extras" in special films, television series, and made-for-TV movies produced in Toronto.

Of course, the majority of extra calls are for more ordinary people, and Stewart has a list of about 650 registered extras. Crowd scenes, which are common, call for everyday people of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, and sizes.

Over at Movie People, last-minute requests are not unusual. "We got a request once for an entire brass band of 30 people. They wanted it within the hour," said manager Yvonne McCartney. Another time, the company got a last-minute request for a newborn baby. "We found a baby that was three weeks premature," said Jonathan Aiken, an owner of the company.

Then there was the worried call from a casting director whose "Star" got doggone stubborn one day and decided to just lie down and not work. The director needed a replacement dog, fast. "We got them two in one hour." said Aiken. "It was a matter of good connections and fast phone work." The eight phone lines needed to make 350 to 400 calls a day are one of Movie People's major expenses.

Phone lines are the only way to stay in touch with casting directors and extras; but the latter are a group not necessarily interested in a long-term relationship. Most extra jobs pay only $7 an hour (with a six-hour minimum), while most agencies charge an annual $75 registration fee and get 10 to 15 per cent of extras’ earnings. It's no wonder that the turnover rate is fairly high.

Some people who are between jobs do extra work as a temporary measure, said McCartney. But professionals, such as lawyers, also do the work because it's interesting. Others with flexible jobs have a desire to do something different. Some homemakers want to get out of the house and onto a movie set. Money's not the motivating reason.

"One of the first t hings I say to people who walk in and ask about being an extra is, ‘You have to be available,' "said a person at Karen Clifton Agency. Inc. "The next thing I say is, 'You can't make a living at this.' ”

28. What kind of people are movie extras?

A. TV series makers.

B. Casting directors.

C. Non-professional movie actors.

D. Agents for movie stars.

29. According to the passage, movie extras should _____.

A. have special talents

B. have a flexible schedule

C. make good connections

D. make hundreds of phone calls daily

30. Why do white collar workers most probably like to be movie extras?

A. They want to make more money.

B. They want to start a career in acting.

C. They think their regular job is boring.

D. They think being on the stage is enjoyable.

31. The underlined word “turnover” in the sixth paragraph probably means _____.

A. business profit

B. the loss of staff

C. market demand

D. operation expenses

D

The government of Norway is planning to build an unusual storage center on an island in the Arctic Ocean. The place would be large enough to hold about two million seeds. The goal is to represent all crops known to scientists. The British magazine New Scientist published details of the plan last month. The structure will be designed to protect the world’s food supply against nuclear war, climate change and other possible threats. It will be built in a mountain on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen. The mountain is less than one thousand kilometers from the North Pole, the northernmost position on Earth.

An international group called the Global Crop Diversity Trust is working on the project. The director of the group, Cary Fowler, spoke to New Scientist. He said the project would let the

world rebuild agriculture if in his words “the worst came to the worst”. Norway is expected to start work next year. The project is expected to cost three million dollars. Workers will drill deep in the side of a sandstone mountain. Temperatures in the area never rise above zero degrees centigrade. The seeds will be protected behind concrete walls a meter thick and high-security doors.

The magazine report says the collection will represent the products of ten thousand years of farming. Most of the seeds at first will come from collections at seed banks in Africa, Asia and Latin America. To last a long time, seeds need to be kept in very low temperatures. Workers will not be present all the time. But they plan to replace the air inside the storage space each winter. Winter temperatures on the island are about eighteen degrees below zero centigrade. The cold weather would protect the seeds even if the air could not be replaced.

Mr. Fowler says the proposed structure wi ll be the world’s most secure gene bank. He says the plant seeds would only be used when all other seeds are gone for some reason. Norway first proposed the idea in the 1980s. But security concerns delayed the plan. At that time, the Soviet Union was permitted use of Spitsbergen. New Scientist says the plan won United Nations approval in October at a meeting in Rome of the Food and Agriculture Organization.

32. The project is meant to_____.

A. increase the world’s food production in the future

B. carry out some scientific experiments on plant genes

C. protect crop seeds from dying out in case of possible disasters

D. build an exhibition centre of the world’s plant seeds

33. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the above passage?

A. The government of Norway will perform the project alone.

B. Seeds to be collected there were produced ten thousand years ago.

C. Spitsbergen is chosen because it is away from the threat of nuclear war forever.

D. Temperature is a major consideration when choosing the storage place.

34. We can infer from the text that_____.

A. People will get newly-developed seeds from the center every year

B. The storage center will greatly promote the development of world agriculture

C. Norway meant to have built the storage centre more than 30 years ago

D. There haven’t been any seed storage centers in the world before

35. What is probably the best title of the passage?

A. Noah’s Ark of Plant Seeds in Plan

B. The Best Place to Store Seeds

C. Concerns of World Food Supply

D. A New Way to Feed the World

Dear Unhappy,

I'm sorry to know that you're having a hard time at the moment. It's understandable that you get stuck on the problem of balancing your study and the Art Festival rehearsal. I am writing to offer you my suggestions.

To begin with, you need to manage your time properly. For example, you can stay focused in class and do your homework during the breaks. In this way, you can rehearse for the drama in your spare time. What's more, you can turn to your classmates for help. They can copy notes for you and help you with the lessons so that you can make preparations for the final exams.

I hope you'll take my suggestions into consideration and soon figure out a way to balance

your study and rehearsal.

Yours,

Text 1

W: Oh, it’s terrible that I left my textbook in the canteen. I’m afraid it was taken by others.

M: If so, why not try to put up a notice? Textbook is hard to get in the bookstore.

Text 2

M: Will this road take me to Beech St?

W: No, this road leads to East Main. You’ll have to turn left on Linden Ave. Text 3

M: Now it’s 8:45 sharp. I set my watch by the radio this morning. W: Guess mine’s fast. It is already 8:50.

Text 4

M: Are you ready for your first driving lesson? W: Yes. Which one is the brake again?

M: The one on your left is the brake and the one on your right is the gas.

Text 5

W: It is so beautiful today, don’t you think?

M: Yeah, it’s amazing. The wind blew away all the old leaves and everything smells so fresh. Text 6

M: Hi, Susan, I heard you are from Mexico. Can you introduce your family?

W: Yes, there are my parents, my elder brother, my twin sister and me. My parents have both retired from the police station. My brother owns a small store and my sister is a college teacher. M: Do you spend much time talking with your parents?

W: Yes. It’s said that there is a generation gap between parents and children in the world today,

but I don’t think this is the case at our house. We often share interesting things together.

Text 7

W: Hey, Matt. Are you going down to watch the game this afternoon?

M: Uh-huh. You know the Reds will take it, don’t you? The Cubs don’t stand a chance. W: Come on! How can you say that?

M: Well, commitment for one thing. The Reds practice a lot harder. W: Yeah, but the Cubs have a great record this year.

M: But not better than the Reds. The Reds have won every game this season.

W: Okay, but I still think the Cubs will win. They have a new manager, five new players, and the fastest base runners in the league!

M:Yeah, but don’t forget their batters. It’s no good having fast runners if you can’t hit. W: We’ll see!

Text 8

M: OK. That’s all for this topic. Thank you for your answering my questions about that. Now I’d like to move on to talk about fashions. So Kate Winslet, would you please tell us about the popular clothes and fashions in your country? W: Well, that’s quite difficult because people have different tastes, but younger people, like me a 25-year-old, tend to wear a lot of jeans, which you wouldn’t see on somebo dy who, say, is 60 or 70 years old. Some of them do not like fashions any more.

M: What sort of fashion shops do you have in your country?

W: Quite a lot. Some big chain stores. There is a big one near my house, but I never visit it. And there’re also smal ler and more independent shops, where I go quite often.

M: Have fashions changed very much since you were younger?

W: I think they have changed quite a lot, but it is interesting to see that some fashions reappear maybe 20 years later. M: Is it important for you to be in fashion?

W: Yes, not desperately so, but I do like to be quite fashionable. Text 9

W: OK, we’ve got all our cloud research so let’s decide how to organize it.

M: We should probably start by saying how clouds are formed, and then move on to the different types of clouds. We can separate them into low-level, medium-level and high clouds.

W: Great, and we should also make a PowerPoint to make the presentation more interesting. M: Right. We should have small cards, too. I’m useless at rememberin g what to say without them. W: Me too. Well, I’m quite happy to organize everything we’ve found out about clouds and make sure it fits into our presentation times. M:Actually, I’d better do that. M: Then I’ll also look on the Internet for pictures of different types of clouds. W: That’ll be great. I’ll prepare the cards so we don’t forget what we’re saying. M: Sounds great. What section do you want to talk about?

W: I hate speaking in front of peopl e so I’d prefer not to do the introduction.

M: I’ll do that. If you don’t want to talk much, then why don’t you just do the middle bit about the medium-level clouds?

W: That’s OK.

This is open from March to November, but the Climbing Center itself only runs courses from March until September, although accommodation for climbers is available in the winter months. The Climbing Center has thirty twin-bedded rooms and ten single rooms providing accommodation for up to 70 people.

I tried a four-day course which I believe was good value at 280 pounds. The price includes all food and accommodation, equipment and instruction. However, you do need to take your own
