Directions:In this section there are four passages. Each of them is followed by some questions. For each question there are four suggested answers marked A),B),C),and D). You should decide on the best choice and

mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

Questions 21-25 are based on the following passage.

By far the most common snake in Britain is the adder (奎蛇). In Scotland, in fact, there are no other snakes at all. The adder is also the only British snake with a poisonous bite. It can be found almost anywhere, but prefers sunny hillsides and rough open country, including high ground. In Ireland there are no snakes at all.

Most people regard snake bites as a fatal (致命的) misfortune, but not all bites are serious, and very few are fatal. Sometimes attempts at emergency treatment turn out to be more dangerous than the bite itself, with amateurs (外行人) heroically, but mistakenly, trying do-it-yourself surgery (手术) and other unnecessary measures.

All snakes have small teeth, so that all snakes can bite, but only the bite of the adder presents any danger. British snakes are shy animals and far more frightened of you than you could possibly be of them. The adder will attack only if it feels threatened, as can happen if you take it by surprise and step on it accidentally, or if you try to catch it or pick it up, which it dislikes intensely. If it hears you coming, it will normally get out of the wa6y as quickly as it can, but adders cannot move very rapidly and may attack before moving if you are very close.

The effect of a bite varies considerably. It depends upon several things, one of which is the body-weight of the person bitten. The bigger the person, the less harmful the bite is likely to be, which is why children suffer far more seriously from snake bites than adults. A healthy person will also have better resistance against the poison.

V ery few people actually die from snake bites in Britain, and though these bites can make some people very ill, there are probably just as many cases of bites having little or no effect, as there are of serious illness.

21. Adders are most likely to be found _______.

A) in wider parts of Britain and Ireland

B) in Scotland but nowhere else

C) on wild land through Britain

D) in the countryside in England

22. If you are with someone who is bitten by an adder, you should ______.

A) try to catch the snake

C) not worry too much about the victim

D) operate him as soon as possible

23. We are told that adders _______.

A) normally friendly towards people

B) unlikely to bite except in self-defense

C) likely to attack people whenever they see them

D) not afraid of human beings

24. If an adder hears you approaching, it will usually ______.

A) move out of your path

B) take no notice of you at all

C) disappear very quickly

D) wait until you are close and then attack

25. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A) Adders are more likely to attack children than adults.

B) The adder prefers to bite a person with a heavy body.

C)The danger of adder bites is different from person to person.

Questions 26-30 are based on the following passages.

Only the government can ensure that the American people have clean air and pure water. Congress must pass laws to stop manufacturers from polluting the air and water with the waste from their factories.

Unless anti-pollution standards are enforced for all, companies that care about a clean environment will go out of business. For example, if Automobile Company X spends money to put an air-pollution control device on their automobiles, thei r cars will be more expensive than the cars produced by another company. People who don?t have the extra money or who don?t care about pollution will not buy the more expensive cars. Automobile Company X will go

bankrupt (破产); that is, it won?t make enough money to pay its workers and to buy materials. It will then go out of business. Of course, no automobile company will make itself go bankrupt on purpose, and the pollution of the land and air and water will go on.

But if the government says that all automobile manufacturers must make cars with air-pollution control devices, the cost of all manufacturers will be equal. So the government cannot let companies decide whether or not they want to stop pollution. The government must force manufacturers to clean up the environment by setting anti-pollution standards for everyone.

D) people like to buy cars that are equipped with pollution control devices

28. According to the writer, anti-pollution standards ensure that ______.

A) no manufacturer will go bankrupt for spending money on pollution control

B) less money will be spent in buying pollution control devices

C) manufacturers know how to control pollution more effectively

D)all manufacturers have to take measures to control pollution

29. The purpose of this passage is _______.

A) to describe how a company can go bankrupt

B) to emphasize the urgent need of cleaning up the environment

C) to stress the importance of the government?s role In preventing pollution

D) to tell how difficult it is to keep the environment free from air-pollution

For this was what the notice just inside th e entrance promised. It said: “Remember, once a week, one of our customers gets free goods. This May Be Your Lucky Day!”

For several weeks Mrs. Edwards hoped, like many of her friends, to be the lucky customer. Unlike her friends, she never gave up hoping. She dashed back to the supermarket, got the tea and went towards the cash-desk. Deep inside a mountain near Sweetwater in East. Tennessee is a body of water known as the Lost Sea. It is listed by the Guinness Book of Would Records as the world?s largest underground lake. The Lost Sea is part of an extensive and historic cave system called Craighead Caverns.

The caverns have been known and used since the days of the Cherokee Indian nation. The cave expands into a series of huge rooms from a small opening on the side of the mountain. Approximately one mile from the entrance, in a room called “The Council Room,” many Indian artisfacts have been found. Some of the items discovered include pottery, arrowheads, weapons, and jewelry.

For many years there were persistent rumors of a large underground lake somewhere in a cave, but it was not discovered until 1905. In that year, a thirteen-year-old boy named Ben Sands crawled through a small opening three hundred feet underground. He found himself in a large cave half filled with water.

Today tourists visit the Lost Sea and ride far out onto it in glass-bottomed boats powered by electric motors. Passage Three

Generations of Americans have been brought up to believe that a g ood breakfast is one life?s essentials. Eating breakfast at the start of the day, we have all been told, and told again, is as necessary as putting gasoline in the family car before starting a trip.

But for many people the thought of food first thing in the morning is by no means a pleasure. So despite all the efforts, they still take no breakfast. Between 1977 and 1983, the latest year for which figures are available, the number of people who didn?t have breakfast, increased by 33 percent.

For those who feelpain of guilt about not eating breakfast, however, there is some good news. Several studies in the last few years indicate that, for adults especially, there may be nothing wrong with omitting breakfast. “Going without breakfast does not affect performan ce,” said Arrold E. Bender, former professor of the nutrition at Queen Elizabeth College in London, “nor does giving people breakfast improve performance.”

Scientific evidence linking breakfast to better health or better performance is surprisingly inadequ ate, and most of the recent work involves children, not adults, “The literature”, says one researcher, Dr. Erresto at the University of Texas, “is poor”.

A. breakfast does not affect performance

C. not eating breakfast might affect the health of children

D. Professor Bender once taught college courses in nutrition in London

Passage Four

About 35% of all high school graduates in America continue their education in an institution of higher learning. The word college is used to refer to either a college or a university. These institutions offer four-year programs that lead to a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor Science (B.S.) degree. Some students attend a junior college (providing only a two-year program) for one to two years before entering a four-year college as a sophomore (二年级生) or junior (三年级生).

It is generally easier to be accepted at a state university than at a private one. Most private schools require strict entrance examinations and a high grade point average (GPA), as well as specific college prep classes in high school.

Private schools cost considerably more than state colleges and famous private schools are very expensive. Poorer students can sometimes attend, however, by earning scholarships. Some college graduates go on to earn advanced masters or doctoral degrees in grad (graduate) school. Occupations in certain fields such as law or medicine require such advanced studies.

Since college costs are very high, most students work at part-time jobs. Some have full-time jobs and go to school part-time. Often some will take five or more years to complete a four-year program because of money / job demands on their time.

While the college and work demands take up the great part of a student?s time, most still enjoy social activities. Sports, dances, clubs, movies, and plays are all very popular. However, gathering together for long, philosophical talks at a favorite meeting place on or near the university is probably the most popular activity.

Why do we laugh? For years scientists have asked themselves this question. Does laughter help us to survive in any way? The answer seems to be like this: smiling and laughter help us relax, reducing tension(紧张) and preventing illnesses which are caused by stress. Laughter really is the best medicine!

But if you are unhappy, it cannot do you any good to smile, can it? Not true. Obviously, the positive effects of smiling are just the same whether you feel like smiling or not. Scientists in California asked a group of actors to act five different feelings: happiness, sadness, anger, surprise and fear just using their faces. Changes in their heart rate, blood pressure and temperature were written down. Most of the feelings they acted did not cause changes, but when the actors smiled their heart rate and their blood pressure went down. So even if we feel sad inside, smiling seems to make us feel better.

A sense of humor also helps to keep things on their positive side. Interfering friends or a flat tire (轮胎漏气) won?t seem so bad if you can see the funny side. So if you find yourself in a stressful situation, try to imagine how it must seem to an outside with a sense of humor and let yourself laugh it off. A scientist writes: “If you try to show a positive reaction and start to laugh, you will actually become happier.”

Y ang Cai is now in his sixth job after graduation. He is a computer programmer in a German company in Nanchang.

The job also marks the latest of several moves he has made in the last four years. In that period, he has worked in several cities including Nanchang, Wuhan, and now Nanchang.

His first job, also his longest, was for a State-owned enterprise producing communication products and lasted one year. His last job, also his shortest, was in designing web pages and lasted three months.

“I am not the most frequent changer of jobs in this industry,” Y ang said. “Working in IT (information technology) companies, I have become accustomed to welcoming new colleagues today and to seeing them off the next month.”

“I have always been in a turbulent (动荡的) situation, and no job gives me a feeling of stability,”

In sharp contrast with Y ang, Wendy, a lawyer in the Nanchang branch of a Beijing-based big law firm, dared not ask for a half a day?s leave to go hospital when she was suffering from a serious cold and cough.

“The boss warns us to work 24 hours a day and you would be mad to ask for leave for illness” said Wendy. So she would work until midnight and give herself medicine she bought to work.

“It?s not easy to get a suitable position nowadays. The boss can easily replace you with someone from the lines of applicants waiting outside the door for your position.” She said.

56. Y ang is an employee who_______.

The servants were up very late on the Saturday evening, getting everything ready for the next day, and while they were busy they saw the glow (暗淡的光) of a fire start in the sky. By 3 o'clock on the Sunday morning, the glow had become so bright that one of the servants, Jane, woke her master to see it. Pepys went to the window to watch it. It seemed fairly far away, so after a time he went back to bed. When he got up in the morning, it looked as though the fire was dying down, though he could still see some flames. So he set to work to tidy his room and put his things back where he wanted them after the servants had cleaned everything. While he was doing this, Jane came in to say that she had heard that the fire was a bad one: three hundred houses had been burned down in the night and the fire was still burning. Pepys went out to see for himself. He went to the Tower of London and climbed up on a high part of the building so that he could see what was happening. From there, Pepys could see that it was, indeed, a bad fire and that even the houses on London Bridge were burning. Someone told him that the fire had started in a

World of the Future Scientists think that wonderful things may come true in the future. Future means a time that is not yet here. It can be a short time from now or a long time from now. Some of the underwater wonders are almost ready to come true now. Others won't come tree, we think, until a long time from now. Some, of course, may never come true--but who knows for sure? They may. What are some of the wonders that may come true in the future? A world underground The green utopia (an ideally perfect place) underground is going to help us regain a more harmonious relationship between the often opposing sides of large-scale development and our ecosystem. The city may be called Alice City, from Alice's Adventure in the Wonderland, which offers a wonderful world that is almost as fantastical as that was described in the book. A large clear dome (圆顶), within an area of open parkland, leads into a multi-leveled structured metropolis of underground offices, housing, transportation and public areas. There will be everything to make the city as self-sufficient as possible including shopping malls, theatres and sports complexes in addition to facilities (contained in a separate structure) for power generation, heating and waste recycling. Apart from offering an almost limitless space for development, such underground development has many more attractive ecological advantages over traditional forms of housing. It is less disturbing than high rise development and therefore favorable in environmentally sensitive areas. Land above the complex can be set aside for parkland and recreational use. In towns or cities where pollution levels are high, air can be filtered through air pipes in the roof of an underground housing or industrial complex. A world underwater At the docks you step into a shiny metal submarine that is shaped like a shark. The door is closed behind you, and powerful engine starts to push. Down slides the submarine--like a shark diving. Deeper and deeper under the water. Soon all sunlight is gone. The headlights of the diving ship are turned on. Then, six miles below, you come to the sea bottom. From the diving submarine, you change to tiny jet boat and ride along close to the bottom of the ocean, almost as you would skim over the land in an air-plane. As you travel, you have fun looking out the window at the sights on the bottom of the ocean. You see strange fish and underwater mountains, cliffs, and valleys. But more than that--hotels and mining camps and farms and factories! A world in space Let's go back to dry land and take a future journey the other way-up instead of down. Huge rocket liners take you into space to visit the Moon Camp. You walk around on the moon in a special moon suit. You visit an observatory where a giant telescope looks far into space--farther than anyone has ever been able to see from Earth. You go deep down into one of the moon mines. After you have visited the moon, you visit the Mars Colony and the Venus Exploration Outpost. A new world on the Earth Let's go back to Earth. In the far, far future, girls--and boys, too--may be playing with dolls that look like the people of the planets visited by our spacemen. To control or run all kinds of toys, boys and girls may learn to use special computers --machines that answer questions and do arithmetic faster than you can blink. Bicycles and perhaps skates may be run by jet power, and a new thing to ride may be a small flying saucer. Imagine a race between them! There may be telepathy (心灵感应) helmets that send thought waves from your brain to that of your friend miles away. You just think a thought and your friend knows it! You can have secrets with each other that nobody else can turn in on! Robots There will be other surprises in the future. How would you like to have a robot playmate? Having robot playmates may not be-so much fun as it seems. But maybe a boy with a wrench (扳手) and a screwdriver can fix the robot so that it won't be too perfect! Food What about the food of the future? Scientists think that much of it will be artificial --made in factories from such surprising things as coal, limestone, air, and water. You don't think that ice-cream or cake or candy or even bread and potatoes made out of these things will taste very good? You may be wrong. These artificial things will be blended so skillfully by food chemists that the food of the future probably will be delicious. It probably will also be healthful because all the things that you need to live a long and healthy life will be put into it. A longer life Scientists of the future will almost certainly find other ways to make life last longer. They probably will find cures for most diseases. Hospitals will probably have "body banks" that can give you almost any new part you need to keep on living. People of the future may live to be a lot older than 100 years. TV Are you wondering whether there'll be television in the future? There'll almost certainly be wonderful programs. Television screens probably will be large and flat, hanging on the wall or going across the four walls of a room. People on the screen will look as real as if they were right in the room with you. Highways What about highways of the future? Well, a very small child probably will be able to drive a car. Nobody will need to steer. Electric signals will hold each car on the right road to get wherever the "driver" wants to go. And it probably will be impossible for cars to smash together. Controls that won't even have to be touched will make all speeding cars miss each other or will put on the brakes. Driving by car will be as safe as being at home. Weather control But maybe the most wonderful surprise in the future will be weather control. Cities may have giant plastic domes over them to keep out snow, rain, or storms. When you plan a picnic in a park, you won't have to worry about rain. It will rain only when the "weatherman" thinks it is needed to freshen the air inside the city. All other days will be fair and warm. The future should be a wonderful time in which to live. But the time you axe living in now was also "a wonderful future" to the people who lived 100 years ago. 1. The underground city would get its name from a book called Alice's Adventure in the Wonderland. A. Y B. N C. NG 2. The multi-leveled structure underground would include everything that is necessary to a city, from offices, shopping malls to power and heating system. A. Y B. N C. NG

Education is all enormous and expensive part of American life. Its size is matched by its variety. Differences in American schools compared with those found in the majority of other countries lie in the fact that education here has long been intended for everyone—not just for a privileged elite(精英,精华 . Schools ale expected to meet the needs of every child, regardless of ability, and also the needs of society itself. This means that public schools offer more than academic subjects. It surprises many people when they come here to find high schools offering such courses as typing, sewing , radio repair, computer programming or driver training , along with traditional academic subjects such as mathematics , history, and languages. Students choose their curricula(课程 depending on their interests, future goals, and level of ability. The underlying(潜在的 goal of American education is to develop every child to the utmost of his or her own possibilities, and to give each one a sense of civic and community consciousness. Schools have traditionally played an important role in creating national unity and “Americanizing” the millions of immigrants who have poured into this country from many different backgrounds and origins. Schools still play a large role in the community, especially in the small towns . The approach to teaching may seem unfamiliar to many, not only because it is informal, but also because there is not much emphasis on learning facts. Instead , Americans try to teach their children to think for themselves and to develop their own intellectual and creative abilities. Students spend much time, learning how to use resource materials libraries, statistics and computers. Americans believe that if children are taught to reason well and to research well, they will be able to find whatever facts they need throughout the rest of their lives . Knowing how to solve problems is considered more important than the accumulation of facts . This is America’s answer to the searching question that thoughtful parents all over the world are asking themselves in the fast-moving time:“How Can one prepare today’s child for a tomorrow that one can neither predict nor understand?”
