A new way to adapt to new culture
Sometimes we come across an embarrassing occasion because of different customs. Sometimes we can't accept that in Japan families take turn to have a bath with the same water. Sometimes we feel confused that in China people usually gather on weekends while in western countries people are most likely to go to the church for praying. When an individual sets out to study, live or work in a new country, he or she will invariably experience difficulties with language, housing, friends, school, work and so on. That's all because of cultural differences. Owning to cultural differences, an individual would lost many opportunities to express himself effectively and his interpersonal relationship will be hindered badly. However, there is still a new way by plenty of preparations to overcome the problems adapting to the new environment.
Long time ago, people have paid great attention on the cultural differences and have taken some measures to solve the problem, such as inviting foreign friends to have dinner, reading many books related to exotic literature and watching foreign movies. Sometimes some people who paid a visit to Japan would explained Chinese values and beliefs to Japanese. For instance, when my friend went out for a dinner with Japanese family, he paid the bill and explained that it just showed hospitality to do so in China. However, they had a negative attitude towards what he did because they would like to go dutch. Virtually, insisting on one’s own cultural values and beliefs may lead to misunderstanding and make other people think we are self-centered and don’t respect their culture. So, a more effective solution need to be taken to figure out the problem.
The most efficient solution of avoiding cultural differences is to do a perfect
preparation before being in touch with other places and persons in foreign countries. Therefore, for personal, preparing properly for a trip abroad can increase the chances of adapting to new culture successfully. Good preparation will not prevent culture shock, but it can help to make it less severe. Taking the time to learn about the new culture helps new comers to anticipate what the new experience will be like. Knowing about the culture, including history, geography, social conditions, arts and customs, is one way to raise cultural awareness and to gain an intellectual appreciation for it. As the saying goes, good preparation is half done, only by this way can you better to blend into new culture.
However, others might argue that it is not reasonable to adapt to the new environment by plenty of preparations because it takes us too much time and we can acclimatize ourselves to the new environment after we arrive there. Nevertheless, most of people thinking that plan can never keep up with the change. A survey shows that if the people do not prepare adequately, when they encounter the problem, their behavior are different from what they expect, but refusing themselves. On the contrary, the people who have a good preparation can be confident, even though they do not know how to solve the problem. Therefore, we can not but emphasize the importance of preparation.
In summary, problems adapting to the new environment between different cultures can be settled if you complete a detailed preparation when you go to foreign countries. What is indispensable is that you must accept foreign culture when you are abroad. So if you get round to make a good preparation, you will be easier to adapt to new culture
in a unfamiliar place.
