1.

At every dry-docking, propellers should be carefully examined and the slightest defect at once rectified. Similarly, any unusual vibration or noise whilst at sea should be investigated immediately and, if the cause cannot be found inlxmrd, then the first opportunity must be taken of an under-water inspection. The expert examination and repair of propellers is a service provided by the leading manufacturers. Whenever possible, use should be made of this service because, first, it is not always easy to detect slight damage and, secondly, inexpert work can quite easily cause irreparable harm.

Cracks formed at or near blade edges, no matter how small, are potentially dangerous, ff a crack should be found close to the boss (within 0.45 of the propeller radius) the makers should be consulted as any repair in this region involving heating can leave very high residual stresses which can only be removed by annealing the complete propeller. Small cracks can be temporarily stopped from spreading by drilling a hole of at least 1 mm in diameter at the extremity of the crack. The hole should be plugged to avoid any risk of cavitation.

89. An under-water inspection should be taken_____.

A. whenever any unusual vibration occurs

B. whenever any abnormal noise occurs

C. whenever the cause for any unusual vibration or noise while at sea cannot be found inboard

D. whenever every dry docking is carded out

90. Why should the service provided by the leading manufacturers be used wherever possible?

A. Only because the service is free of charge.

B. Only because it is not easy to detect slight damage.

C. Only because inexpert work can quite easily cause irreparable harm.

D. Because it is difficult to find slight dmnage and inexpert work can result in irreparable harm.

91. If a crack should be found near the boss (within O. 45 of the propeller radius), which action should be taken first?

A. Repairing this region

B. Annealing the complete propeller

C. Consulting the makers

D. Drilling a hole with diameter less than 1 mm

92. Which of the following statements is tine?

A. If cracks formed near blade edges are very small, no care should be taken.

B. Only by annealing the complete propeller can the high residual stresses be removed.

C. Small cracks can be permanently stopped from spreading by drilling a hole.

D. The hole should be drilled at the middle of the crack.

2.

The CO2 fire extinguishing installation may incorporate a smoke sampling system so that fire can be detected in the early stage at the smoke detecting cabinet, which is situated in the wheelhouse. Each cargo compartment is individually connected to the smoke detecting cabinet with small bore piping and, by a suction fan mounted on the wheelhouse roof, samples of the air in each cargo space are continually drawn up to the smoke detecting cabinet and discharged into the wheelhouse or the atmosphere through a diverting valve. Thus smoke from a fire in any cargo space can be immediately detected.
