Passage 1

The mass media influences all aspects of our lives, including the learning of gender roles. Newspapers and magazines, television, and film all have an influence on how we view the roles of women and men and on how we think they should behave.

Four decades ago, traditional women’s magazines such as Good Housekeeping and Family Circle talked to women as though they were children who needed to learn the basics of how to care for their families. Today, magazines do not do this. However, they still tend to define the female role in terms of homemaking and motherhood, and to offer beauty advice to help women attract men and please husbands. There are now a few less traditional magazines such as Ms. that show women in a range of roles and that cover a much wider range of topics.

Television commercials have also, until recently, presented women primarily as sex objects and as housewives. Y oung sexy women were shown admiring older men who smoked a particular cigarette brand. Housewives were shown smiling joyfully about their clean bathrooms, or looking guil ty for not using the right laundry soap to wash their husband’s clothes. These days advertisers are more careful about the way they present women, and they are presented in a variety of roles. However, it is still quite common to see advertisements where beautiful young women are dressed in sexy clothes to sell cars or other products. One study also found that the changes are mainly on nighttime television, with daytime commercials still tending to portray women doing household chores.

Prime-time television programs also often used to stereotype women. In past decades, women were usually portrayed as lovers, as mothers, or as weak, passive girlfriends of powerful, effective men. Today’s TV programs are somewhat different. Women are more likely to be presented as successful and able to support themselves and their families, but the traditional stereotypes of women are still there. Even when women are depicted as career women, the storylines suggest that they should be sexy as well.

Passage 2

There has been a record of significant interaction between Eastern and Western medical systems for several hundred years. However, the first part of the 20th century was very much a one way flow of information as the developments in Western medicine flooded into China. In Western countries Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) was relatively unknown until President Nixon’s groundbreaking visit to China in 1971 and the accounts of the use of acupuncture for pain control appeared in the New Y ork Times.

Since then there has been a rapid growth in the awareness and use of TCM in Western countries. Universities around the world are now offering degrees in TCM. In the UK there are several thousand practitioners offering herbal medicines, acupuncture and other tec hniques within a Western clinical setting.

There are several reasons for this rapid rise in popularity. The initial appeal of the foreign culture was replaced by research reports indicating the effectiveness of TCM treatments. The groundbreaking studies on the successful use of Chinese herbal medicines in the treatment of eczema at Great Ormond Street Hospital hit the national headlines and established medical journals.

TCM is now frequently used for this and many other forms of skin disease. Alongs ide the evidence supporting the use of TCM there was also a growing sense of dissatisfaction with the limitations of modern medical treatment. The lack of a holistic perspective, short consultation times and the side effects of pharmaceutical drugs have indicated that more and more people are seeking additional forms of health care. In recent years improved standards of education and professional organization, and a new emphasis on quality control have indicated that now there is a network of well qualified TCM practitioners offering the benefits of this ancient tradition to the Western public.

As a communication device, the mobile phone benefits us a lot. We can use it to keep in touch with our families, our friends and our classmates wherever we are. In festivals, we can send short messages to wish good luck to other people we known. It brings us a lot of convenience.

As a coin has two sides, the mobile phone also has disadvantages. We spend too much time on spelling our words and sending short messages that we can't focus on our studies. Also, you will always be annoyed by strangers' calls one after another.
