In 1848, gold was discovered in California; from all over the nation, thousands of young men set out for California. People called this the time of the Gold Rush. A gold miner came into a city looking for a pair of pants. He wanted pants strong enough to stand up to the rough work of mining. He met a young man named Levi, who sold heavy cloth for tents and wagon tops. They asked a tailor to use heavy cloth for their pants. Then Levi went into the business of making work pants. He asked his brothers to send him some strong blue cotton cloth called denim (斜纹粗棉布). With this blue denim cloth, Levi started making the kind of pants we call blue jeans today. They were sewed up in the same way as other pants.

In 1860, a miner said that the pockets weren't strong enough to hold the pieces of gold he found. The pockets kept pulling loose from the pants. The cloth was all right. It was the thread that wasn't strong enough. So Levi used rivets (铆钉) to attach the pockets onto the pants. Cowboys needed tough pants, too. They liked their pants to fit tightly. But the rivets marked the cowboys'

saddles. So Levi covered the rivets with cloth. Then everybody was happy.

Questions 139 to 143 are based on the following passage.

Rote-learning (死记硬背), spoon-fed education, produces a brand of kids that don't know what to do when entering university. They are disciplined into following, not leading. Yet the future depends on creativity and imagination. The world needs creators, makers and shakers of the new centuries, not the followers of the past centuries. As the numbers increase at college and university level, more students from the lower ends are likely to be thrown into a system designed to choose only learners that have proved excellent in listening to teachers.

There are three ways to learn: looking, listening and doing. Students and teachers today are a product of learning by listening. The computer may not be liked by traditional teachers, who use rote-learning to put information, which will be out of date in a few years, into the heads of the students. With computer learning you learn by looking, listening and doing; you use three methods of learning, not just one.

Therefore, you can learn faster. The changing speed of information is frightening. What we learn now will be out of date in the near future. So what students are learning now at school may be replaced by the time they finish university. We have to learn by choice what to forget. Rote-learning for exams is one thing, but wouldn’t it be better to learn how to learn? The students

at university today could possibly be doing a job in the not too distant future which has not yet been invented.

139. According to the author, the future doesn't need ____________.

A. creativity

B. imagination

C. creators

D. followers

140. In the author's view, how can students learn well?

A. Carefully listen to the teacher in class.

B. Take down every single word said by the teacher.

C. Learn all the notes by heart.

D. Combine listening with looking and doing.

141. What does the author mean by “The changing speed of information is frightening”?

A. We don't have enough time to adjust ourselves to the speed of information.

B. What we learned today may not be useful tomorrow.

C. The pace of life is too fast.

D. The world is changing every minute.

142. What does the last sentence of the passage tell us?

A. Rote-learning is completely harmful.

B. Students may have to do jobs which have not yet been invented.

C. It is better to learn how to learn than learn what to forget.

D. Students must look into the future.

143. The author's attitude towards rote-learning is _________.

A. approving

B. disapproving

C. confident

D. opposite to what the words say

Questions 144 to 148 are based on the following passage.

In the United States 84 colleges now accept just women. Most of them were established in the 19th century; they were designed to offer women the education they could not receive anywhere else. At that time major universities and colleges accepted only men. In the past 20 years many young women have chosen to study at colleges that accept both men and women. As a result some wom en’s colleges decided to accept men students too. Others, however, refused to change. Now these schools are popular again. The president of Trinity College in Washington, D.C. said that by the end of the 1980s women began to recognize that studying at the same school with men did not mean women were having an equal chance to learn. The president of Smith College in Massachusetts says a women’s college permits women to choose classes and activities freely. For example, she says that in a women’s college a hi gher percentage of students studies mathematics than in a college with both men and women. Educational experts say men students in the United States usually speak in class more than women students do. In a women’s college, women feel freer to say what they think. Women's schools also bring out leadership capabilities in many women. Women are represented everywhere. For example, at a women’s college every governing

Since the late 1960s a growing number of women have expressed a strong dissatisfaction with any marriage arrangement wherein the husband and his career are the primary considerations in the marriage. By the end of the 1970s, for example, considerably less than half of the women in the United States still believed that they would put their husbands and children ahead of their own careers. More and more American women have come to believe that they should be equal partners rather than junior partners in their marriages. This stage of marriage, although not typical of most American marriages at present, will grow most rapidly in the future, hi an equal partnership marriage, the wife pursues a full-time job or career which has equal importance to her husband's. The long-standing division of labor between husband and wife comes to an end. The husband is no longer the main provider of family income, and the wife no longer has the main responsibilities for household duties and raising children. Husband and wife share all these duties equally. Power over family decisions is also shared equally. The rapid change in women's attitudes toward marriage in the 1970s reflected rapid change in the larger society. The Women’s Liberation

Movement appeared in the late 1960s, demanding an end to all forms of sexual discrimination against females. An Equal Rights Amendment (修正案) to the U. S. Part 8 Short Answer Questions

Directions: Read the following passage carefully and give brief answers to the questions. Questions 154 to 158 are based on the following passage.

Lately it seems like all the shoes I see in the stores have high heels (高跟). Frankly, I like the way they look, but aren't they bad for my feet? Yes, they are. The popularity of high heels doesn't mean they can't hurt you. They can do harm to your entire body -- not just your feet. People take an average of 10,000 steps a day. High heels change the force of each of those steps so that the most pressure ends up on the ball of the foot and on the bones at the base of the toes. As a result, heels can lead to many foot diseases, such as heel pain, toe deformities (畸形), trapped nerves and so on. In fact, women account for about 90% of the nearly 800,000 operations each year for these diseases and most of these surgeries can be linked back to their high-heeled shoe choice. The problems can travel upward, too. The ankle, knee, and hip joints can all suffer from your shoe choices. When wearing your high-heeled shoes, the foot is held in a downward position as you walk. This keeps the knee, hip, and lower back in a somewhat bended position, which prevents the

muscles that cross the backside of these joints to straighten to full length as they normally would. Over time, this can lead to stiffness, pain, and injury. High heels can also cause lower back strain, because the heel causes your body to pitch forward more than normal, putting excess pressure on the back.

154. Which parts of the body do high-heeled shoes do harm to?

155. How can high-heels lead to foot diseases?

156. Women's high-heeled shoe choice is linked to the operations for their foot diseases, which account for ______ of the nearly 800,000 surgeries of this kind each year.

157. In addition to the foot, what are the other parts of the body which suffer from wearing high-heels?

158. Why can high heels cause lower back strain?
