On behalf of the Asian Studies Development Program, a partnership between the East-West Center and the University of Hawaii, I am please to invite you to participate in the Teaching About China and the United States international exchange program, June 28-July 19, 2004. Dr. Elizabeth Buck, Special Assistant to the President for Education, Professor Roger Ames, Professor of Comparative Philosophy at the University of Hawaii, and Professor Liu Qingguo, Professor of International Relations at Peking University, are co-directors of the institute, with Sigfried Ramler as institute coordinator.

The purpose of this program is to have Chinese and American faculty explore common issues during a three-week program to improve teaching about US and China. After several days of orientation at Peking University for both groups of faculty, Chinese participants will visit the United States, especially Washington, D. C. and Youngstown, Ohio, while the American travel to Xi’an and Shanghai, China. At the conclu sion, participants will meet in Honolulu for a final program and presentations.

During your travel in the United States, there will be meetings and briefings with state and federal officials, journalists, business experts, and other professionals to provide a general overview of the United States.

The East-West Center will provide round-trip airfare from Beijing to the U.S., hotel accommodations in Washington, D. C. and Youngstown, Ohio, dormitory-style housing in Hawaii, all ground transportation related to the program, some meals in Hawaii and on the U. S. mainland, and a modest stipend of $500 to cover meals not covered by the program and incidental expenses.

Personal statement for English and American Literature

Having majored in literary studies (world literature) as an undergraduate, I would like to concentrate on English and American literature.

I am especially inerested in 19th-century literature, women’s literature and folk literature. My personal literary projects have involved some combination of the two subjects. For the oral section of my comprehensive exams, I specialized in 19th-century novels by and about women. The relationship between “high” and folk literature became the subject of my honors essay, which examined Toni Morriso n’s use of classical, biblical, African, and Afro-American folk tradition in her novel. I plan to work further on this essay, treating Morrison’s other novels and perhaps preparing a paper suitable for publication. In my studies toward a doctoral degree, I hope to examine more closely the relationship between “high” and folk literature. My junior year and private studies of Anglo-Saxon language and literature have encouraged me to consider the divisions between folklore, folk literature, and “high” literatu re. Should I attend your school, I would like to resume my studies of Anglo-Saxon poetry, with special attention to its folk elements.

In terms of a career, I see myself teaching literature or writing criticism. Doctoral studies would be valuable to me in several ways. First, your teaching assistantship program would provide me with the practical teaching experience I am eager to acquire. Further, earning a Ph.D. in English and American literature would advance my other two career goals by adding to my skills, both critical and creative, in working with language. Ultimately, however, I see the Ph.D. as an end in itself, as well as a professional stepping stone (垫脚石,跳板,阶梯);I enjoy studying literature for its own sake and would like to continue my studies on the level demanded by the Ph.D. program.

清三小复习资料——书信格式 书信,是我们日常生活中经常使用的一种应用文。一般的书信由六个部分构成。这六个部分是:称呼、问候、正文、祝颂语、署名、日期。下面分别说说它们在格 式上的要求。 (1)称呼 写一封信,先要把收信人的称呼顶格写在第一行,然后,再在后面加上冒号,表示下面有话要说。 (2)问候语 问候语要写在称呼的下一行,空两格。它可以独立成为一段。 (3)正文 正文一般分为连接语、主体文、总括语三个部分。每一个部分开头都应另起一行,空两格落笔。 (4)祝颂语 祝颂语是表示致敬或祝贺一类的话,另起一行,空两格写:如“祝”“祝你”“敬祝”等。另外,在写“身体健康”和“学习进步”等一类表示具体祝愿的话语时,一般要另起一行顶格写。 祝福语和署名之间空一行!
