Everybody has had at least one experience from which he knows the meaning of life. This time, which took place several years ago, but seems as if it just happened.

On an afternoon several years ago, my brother-in-law opened the bottom drawer of my sister's dress and picked out a beautiful skirt. "Jan bought this the first time we went to New York, at least 8 or 9 years ago. She never wore it. She was saving it for a special occasion. " he said. I guess this was the occasion: it was the funeral (葬礼) of my sister, after her unexpected death.

He took the shirt and put it on bed, with the other clothes we were taking to the funeral. Then he closed the drawer and turned to me, "Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Every day you're alive is a special occasion. "

I'm thinking about his words, and they've changed the way I live my life. I'm spending more time with my family and friends and less time in committee meetings. Whenever possible, life should be a kind of experience to enjoy, not to suffer. "Someday" and "one of these days" are losing their importance on my vocabulary. If it's worth seeing or hearing or doing, I want to see and hear and do it now.

Ever since that day, I have been trying very hard not to put off, hold hack or save anything that would add laughter and color to our lives. Every morning when I open my eyes. I tell myself that every day, every minute, every breath, truly is a gift. So cherish every day and find the true meaning of your life.

34. What does the author write this passage for?

A. To show how to make good use of every day in life.

B. To explain the true meaning of his brother-in-law's words.

C. To tell people to cherish every day and find the meaning of life.

D. To encourage people to waste time and enjoy themselves in life.

We spent a day in the country and picked a lot of flowers. Our car was full of flowers inside!

On our way home we had to stopped at traffic lights, and there my wife saw the bookshelf. It stood outside a furniture shop. “Buy it, ” she said at once. “We?ll carry it home on the roof-rack(车顶). As it was getting darker, I drove slowly. Other drivers seemed more polite that evening. The police even stopped traffic to let us through. Carrying furniture was a good idea. After a time my wife said, “There?s a long line of cars behind. Why don?t they overtake?”

“Right, sir, ” he said. “Do you need any more help now?”

I didn?t quite understand. “Thanks, officer, ” I said. “You have been very kind. I live just on the road.”

He was staring at our car: first at the flowers, then at the cupboard. “Well, well, ” he said and laughed. “It?s a bookshelf you?ve got there! We thought it was something else.”

Good tool design is important in the prevention of overuse injuries. Well-designed tools and equipment will require less force to operate them and prevent awkward(别扭的)hand positions. They will allow the worker to keep the elbows(肘)next to the body to prevent damage to the shoulder and arm.

Overuse injuries can therefore be prevented or reduced if the employer provides, and workers use:

●power tools rather than havi ng to use muscle(肌肉)power

●too ls with handles that can be held comfortably by the whole hand. This means having a selection of sizes—remember that tools that provide a comfortable firm Hold for a person with a very large hand may be awkward for someone with a very small hand. Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature .However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your sport of choice might have great influence on the environment.

Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses(球场)in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas.

There are many environment-friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don?t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don?t have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you

fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.

Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”. They are better replacements for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it?s free.

39. Which of the following is the author most probably in favor of?

A. Swimming in a sports center.

B. Motor racing in the desert.

C. Playing basketball in a gym.

D. Cycling around a lake.

40. What do we know about golf from the passage?

A. It is popular in Portugal and Spain.

B. It causes water shortages around the world.

C. It pollutes the earth with chemicals and wastes.

D. It needs water and electricity to keep its courses green.

41. The author uses power walking as an example mainly because________.

A. it is an outdoor sport

B. it improves our health

C. it uses fewer resources

D. it is recommended by experts

42. The author writes the passage to________.

A. show us the function of major sports

B. encourage us to go in for green sports

C. discuss the major influence of popular sports

D. introduce different types of environment-friendly sports

A new study shows students who write notes by hand during lectures perform better on exams than those who use laptops(笔记本电脑).

Students are increasingly using laptops for note-taking because of speed and legibility(清晰度).But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and apply the concepts they have been taught.

Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased the tendency to make notes "mindlessly" by taking down word for word what the professors said In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper .They listened to the same lectures and were told to use their usual note-taking skills. Thirty minutes after the talk , they were examined on their ability to remember facts and on how well they understood concepts.

The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those who wrote by hand. However, the typists performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts.

The researchers' report said, "While more notes are beneficial, if the notes are taken mindlessly, as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears."

In another experiment aimed at testing long-term memory, students took notes as before but were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes by hand performed significantly better on the exam.

These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future.

47. More and more students favor laptops for note-taking because they can________.

C. get higher scores

D. understand lectures better

48. While taking notes, laptop users tend to be________.

C. thoughtful

D. tireless

49. The author of the passage aims to________.

A. examine the importance of long-term memory

B. stress the benefit of taking notes by hand

C. explain the process of taking notes

D. promote the use of laptops

50. The passage is likely to appear in .

A. a newspaper advertisement

B. a computer textbook

C. a science magazine

D. a finance report

阅读下面短文并回答问题,然后将答案写到答题卡相应的位置上(请注意问题后的词数

要求)。

My wife Laura and I were on the beach, with three of our children, taking pictures of shore birds near our home in Alaska when we spotted a bear. The bear was thin and small, moving aimlessly.

Ju st a few minutes later, I heard my daughter shouting, “Dad! The bear is right behind us!” An aggressive bear will usually rush forward to frighten away its enemy but would suddenly stop at the last minute. This one was silent and its ears pinned back— the sign (迹象) of an animal that is going in for the kill. And it was a cold April day. The bear behaved abnormally, probably because of hunger.

I held my camera tripod (三脚架) in both hands to form a barrier as the bear rushed into me. Its huge head was level with my chest and shoulders, and the tripod stuck across its mouth. It bit down and I found myself supporting its weight. I knew I would not be able to hold it for long.

Even so, this was a fight I had to win: I was all that stood between the bear and my family, who would stand little chance of running faster than a brown bear.

The bear hit at the camera, cutting it off the tripod. I raised my left arm to protect my face; the beast held tightly on the tripod and pressed it into my side. My arm could not move, and I sensed that my bones were going to break.

Drawing back my free hand, I struck the bear as hard as I could for five to six times. The bear opened its mouth and I grasped its fur, trying to push it away. I was actually wrestling (扭打) with the bear at this point. Then, as suddenly as it had begun, the fight ended. The bear moved back toward the forest, before returning for another attack— the first time I felt panic.

Apparently satisfied that we caused no further threat, the bear moved off, destroying a fence as it went. My arm was injured, but the outcome for us could hardly have been better. I?m proud that my family remained clear-headed when panic could have led to a very different outcome. 56. What were the family doing when the bear appeared? (no more than 7 words)
