One clever ch-app

WHILE most teenagers were spending their time searching for useful smartphone applications, a 17-year-old student in London was developing his own.

Nick D?Aloisio, who has been li kened (被比作) to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, launched a top-selling app that provides easy-to-read summaries of news stories. Launched earlier this month, it became number nine in Apple?s app store just two hours after its release in the US.

The app, called Summly, condenses (浓缩) online news articles into three key paragraphs that fit onto an iPhone screen. Users can customize (定制) the news categories and link to the original article if they like the summary.

The young creator knew it would be p opular even before it went on sale. “People are not scrolling (翻阅) through 1,000-word articles – they want snack-sized information,” he told the BBC.

The app has attracted fans ranging from Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing, who invested (投资) around $250,000 for its development, to US media giant Rupert Murdoch, whose News Corporation has already signed a deal to share payrolled (付费的) content with the teenager.

Son of a lawyer and an investment banker, D?Aloisio is obsessed with design. He said he has been designing apps for mobiles in his bedroom since he was 12.

“I?m described as a Net native, so I was born when the Internet was founded and have only known a world with the Internet,” he told The Telegraph.

He came up with his hit idea when he was using Google. He found that there were so many results to scroll through that it was really inefficient.

“So I built an algorithm (操作模式) that shared them and trimmed (删减) them. Then it just transformed into the idea of: …Why not just summarize news in general??” He told the British newspaper.

D?Aloisio took time off school to develop his idea for a smartp hone application. As an app entrepreneur (企业家), instead of coming home from school he came home from work at 6 pm. And instead of doing homework, he was reading e-mails or testing his product. “I get just as stressed with Summly as I did with exams,” he sa id.

But the schoolboy plans to return to King?s College School in London, where he is yet to take his A-levels He would like to study philosophy (哲学) or history at university because he sees the value of a “balanced education”.

Fear of fiction

ONCE upon a time it was boarding school adventures and mysteries solved by tweed-wearing detectives that fired you ng readers? imaginations. Now, it seems, it is the promise of tales of blood sucking vampires (吸血鬼), unstoppable zombies (僵尸), howling werewolves and terrifying beasts that inspires young audiences to pick up a book.

Teen horror is a genre (体裁) that seems to be going from strength to strength, with titles like The Demonata and The Saga of Larten Crepsey by Irish born writer, Darren Shan, topping the charts. Indeed Darren Shan?s success has earned him the title of “Master of Children?s Horror” and his bo oks, which also include The Thin Executioner and the vampire series The Saga of Darren Shan, have sold more than 20 million copies worldwide.

But what is it about horror fiction that so appeals to young readers, and just how scary do they like it?

“I think horror allows teenagers to focus on real-life issues in a fantastical (空想的) way, helping them analyse and make sense of the world as they are coming to a greater understanding of it,” says Darren. “In my book, Lord Loss, the main character?s paren ts and sister are slaughtered (残杀) by demons (恶魔). While that?s obviously not going to happen to anyone in the real world, many children will lose people they love during their formative years, whether it?s grandparents dying of old age, or friends or rela tives in accidents. A book like this can hopefully help them prepare for when death strikes at them in real life. Good horror is always about helping us prepare for the darker aspects of life –and since we can?t avoid them, we might as well turn them into entertainment!”

Darren tours frequently, attending events in schools and libraries, and talking to young readers helps him gauge (判断) what they can and can?t take in terms of frightening content. He explains: “When I?m writing an especially grisly (可怕的) scene, I imagine myself reading it out in a live environment, and ask myself if I would feel comfortable doing so. If not, I?ll go back and tweak (微调) the scene. I have no set formula (准则) for deciding what is suitable and what is not. I simply go with my gut instinct (直觉).”

Keeping track of time

TICK, tick, tick… you are sitting in the classroom, trying hard to focus on the teacher, but the noise of the clock on the wall keeps reminding you how slowly time is moving. Meanwhile, you think of the exciting weekend you just had and ask yourself how it has come and gone so fast.

Why do we sense time so differently? To understand that we first need to look at how our brain keeps track of time.

Without looking at a clock or seeing where the sun is, humans can still figure out how much time has passed. This is because we keep an independent sense of time in our brain, according to Live Science.

To understand this ability, researchers from the University of Minnesota, US, trained two rhesus monkeys (猕猴) to move their eyes between two dots in regular one-second intervals. After three months, the monkeys learned to move their eyes at a speed of about one second without any cues (提示) in the room that could help them tell time.

The researchers then measured the electrical signals sent from the monkey?s brain neurons (神经元) and found that the activity of these cells decreased between each eye movement in a regular way, which helped the monkey sense the right length of time.υBut whenever the decrease slowed down, it corresponded with the monkeys overestimating (高估) the length of a second, while a faster rate of decrease meant they would move their eyes before the time was up.?

“The animals? timing varied after these neurons were more, or less, active. It?s as if the activity of these neurons was serving as an internal (内部的) hourglass (沙漏),” Professor Geoffrey Ghose, the lead researcher, told Live Science.

Not only did this experiment reveal how the brain has the ability to keep time, it also gave an explanation as to why, under certain conditions, our sense of time feels different.

An individual?s stress level, for example, affects that amou nt of certain chemicals, such as adrenalin (肾上腺素), in the brain and this affects the rate of neuronal activity.

This study suggests that scientists may one day be able to control how we experience time by changing the neuronal activities in our brain. This could make the one-hour commute (通勤) from home to school feel more bearable.

Power of a voice

GROWING up in Kenya was amazing because I learned so much, though the poverty and lack of resources were sometimes frustra ting. I knew I didn?t have much, but I was happy. There was only one thing I wasn?t happy with: education. I wanted to go to high school and university. I had the drive, the will and the grades, but I didn?t have the resources. Even basic things like food, water and shelter weren?t readily available.

Young people in poverty have little or no access to high schools and universities. Where I lived, it was challenging unless someone helped.

When I left primary school, I was in the same situation as many other financially disadvantaged youth. Luckily, during that year, a charitable high school for girls, Starehe Girls Centre, was founded and I received a scholarship (奖学金). Today, I am on record as being the first student to be enrolled (招收) in this school.

In 2006, my school joined The Global Give Back Circle, a not-for-profit organization for disadvantaged girls to complete their education and gain employable skills. I was assigned to a mentor (导师), Charlotte Gower. After graduating from high school, I was given access to a nine-month IT course. In addition, its give-back attitude had taught us to not only care about ourselves but other people.

With this in mind, 10 of us created a website called “Hey Sister, Get Clued-Up”. Through this educational website, aimed at networking 10,000 African girls worldwide, all Sisters commit to sending information to their villages.υ This can be to promote financial freedoms, advance information related to health issues and provide knowledge about social networking behavior.

“Hey Sister, Get Clued-Up” is only available to those girls who can access the Internet, which highlights (突出) the huge challenge in narrowing the divide between the haves and have-nots.? But our plan is that these girls will spread what they learn to other girls through the “power of their voice”.

commit to say that (sb or sth) will definitely do sth

The contract commits the company to finishing the bridge by next fall.

Good soil promotes plant growth.

Sentence bank

What will the world of the future be like? There are plenty of people who are happy to give their opinion of what we will be doing in 2050. Here are two predictions about the world of tomorrow. When we dream about the future, many like to think of owning a personal flying car. The advantages are obvious. This technology would allow total freedom of movement. We could fly at 480 km per hour, avoiding traffic lights and busy roads. However, some people believe there will be problems with traffic control. If the cars become popular, there is likely to be air traffic jam. Another big problem is mechanical failure. What will happen if the cars stop working? These are problems we must expect if flying cars become a reality. Three-dimensional printing is another new technology with exciting possibilities. 3D printers are used to build an object with liquid plastic. They build the object layer by layer until it is complete. Car companies already use 3D printers to make life-size models of car parts, and medical companies use the technology to make man-made body parts. As we move into the future, 3D printing will revolutionize the way we shop, the way we manufacture and the way we treat sick people. The disadvantage is that such equipment will be extremely expensive. So in the future, we might be able to fly to work or print out new shoes. Although there are some problems to solve before this will be possible, we can certainly dream of a world where technology makes life easier and safer for millions of people. (1)What is the passage mainly about? A. Environmental protection. B. The world of tomorrow. C. Advantages of technology. (2)What do we learn from the passage? A. Some people think technology development may bring new problems B. 3D printing can bring great changes to our life and its equipment is cheap. C. The flying cars won't bring air traffic jam even when they become popular.

例如:十八世纪英国历史时有这样一个句子:“The last was the Battle of Waterlo o, won by the duke of Wellington over the great Napoleon, a victory so important and so complete that today, when we say that a man will …meet his Waterloo?, we mean he will encounter final disaster.” Tony Trivisonno came to America seeking the American Dream. But he didn?t find it-he created it for himself. All he had were 24 precious hours a day,and he wasted none of them.

Many people have long dreamed of being able to fly around as simply as riding a bicycle. Yet the safety and strength of a flying bike was always a big problem. Over the past 10 years, developments in technology have moved the dream of personal flying vehicles closer to reality. Now, two groups of inventors say such vehicles may be available soon. The British company Malloy Aeronautics has developed a prototype (原型) of its flying bicycle. Grant Stapleton, marketing sales director of Malloy Aeronautics, says the Hoverbike is able to get in and out of small spaces very quickly. It can be moved across continents very quickly because it can be folded and packed, he adds. Mr. Stapleton says safety was the company's main concern. He says the designers solved the safety issue by using overlapping rotors ( 交叠式旋翼 )to power the vehicle. The company is testing a full-size prototype of the Hoverbike, which will most likely be used first by the police and emergency rescue teams. In New Zealand, the Martin Aircraft Company is also testing a full-size prototype of its personal flying device, called the Jetpack. It can fly for more than 30 minutes, up to 1,000 meters high and reach a speed of 74 kilometers per hour. Peter Coker is the CEO of Martin Aircraft Company. He said the Jetpack “is built around safety from the start. In his words, reliability is the most important element of it. We have safety built into the actual structure itself, very similar to a Formula One racing car.” The Jetpack uses a gasoline-powered engine that produces two powerful jet streams. Mr. Coker says it also has a parachute (降落伞) that can be used should there be an emergency. “It starts to work at very low altitude and actually saves both the aircraft and the pilot,” he adds. Mr. Coker says the Jetpack will be ready for sale soon. (1)We can learn from the passage that the Hoverbike . A. can hardly get in and out of small spaces quickly B. can fly for over 30 minutes, up to 1,000 meters high C. has been used by the police and emergency rescue teams D. can be transported quickly after being folded and packed (2)The writer uses the example of For One racing car to show that . A. the Jetpack is very safe and reliable B. the engine of the Jetpack is powerful C. the actual structure of the Jetpack is unique D. the Jetpack can reach a great speed and height (3)The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer s to. A. the jet stream B. the engine C. the Jetpack D. the parachute (4)What is the authors main purpose of writing the passage? A. To describe the problems of inventing flying vehicles. B. To introduce the latest development of flying vehicles. C. To show the differences between two flying vehicles. D. To advertise the two personal

I have run out of my money, and I have to ask parents for help. I have no money now.③用图片的方式在问题中或回 答问题中进行。 Wind energy, water energy and solar energy are the forms of the alternative energy. What people won’t have to pay for?中won’t have to pay for means free of change。 All forms of recreation, such as cinemas, bowling, softball, concerts and others will be provided free of charge. Free of charge means for free or needn’t pay for.⑤直接给出汉语意思。
