1.Reading Activity 1.1 Pre-reading Task Do you know how to write a paper with an academic voice? Most Chinese students use only the casual voice for their daily life purposes, which does not fit the academic writing style. When you can learn to use an academic voice and a formal writing style, you will gain authority and respect for yourself as a researcher as well as a research writer. Read the following three texts with different kinds of voice and tell what they differ in. 1.2 Reading Passage HOW’S YOUR VOICE? Casual Voice Hey, dude, no way you can sit here! Huzzah! We won! We beat ‘em! Ha! Blue Vampires. They think they’re so great. We showed ‘em. Go Aardvarks! Yuck! I hate broccoli with those nasty, stinkin’ mush-rooms. Why do we gotta have these things again, man?! www, we gotta cancel the Consultative Voice You’re not allowed to sit in this area, because it’s a safety concern. I’m so glad for our team, the great Fighting Aardvarks, and now together we celebrate this victory. I’d prefer not to have this particular vegetable again, if it’s possible. Does anyone really enjoy this combination of mushrooms and broccoli? It’s possible that our party might have to be postponed or canceled because of the Academic Voice This area must be kept clear for foot traffic. The Fighting Aardvarks claimed victory over the Blue Vampires in the final round tonight. Both teams competed well and the fans are enthusiastic. Very few people enjoy this broccoli and mushroom dish. Therefore, it will not be served again within this calendar year, or the servers will be killed. Due to the inclement weather, the Annual Tattoo Party will not

It provides several key abstractions – a hierarchy of thread blocks, shared memory, and barrier synchronization. This model has proven quite successful at programming multithreaded many core GPUs and scales transparently to hundreds of cores: scientists throughout industry and academia are already using CUDA to achieve dramatic speedups on production and research codes. In this paper, we propose a hybrid parallel programming approach using hybrid CUDA and MPI programming, which partition loop iterations according to the number of C1060 GPU nodes in a GPU cluster which consists of one C1060 and one S1070. Loop iterations assigned to one MPI process are processed in parallel by CUDA run by the processor cores in the same computational node. Keywords: CUDA, GPU, MPI, OpenMP, hybrid, parallel programming I. INTRODUCTION Nowadays, NVIDIA’s CU DA [1, 16] is a general purpose scalable parallel programming model for writing highly parallel applications. It provides several key abstractions – a hierarchy of thread blocks, shared memory, and barrier synchronization. This model has proven quite successful at programming multithreaded many core GPUs and scales transparently to hundreds of cores: scientists throughout industry and academia are already using CUDA [1, 16] to achieve dramatic speedups on production and research codes. In NVDIA the CUDA chip, all to the core of hundreds of ways to construct their chips, in here we will try to use NVIDIA to provide computing equipment for parallel computing. This paper proposes a solution to not only simplify the use of hardware acceleration in conventional general purpose applications, but also to keep the application code portable. In this paper, we propose a parallel programming

Keys to Task Extensions Unit1 Task6:Extensions 6.1(for reference only) Introduction The purpose of this project is to find out the real situation in which the students in a particular college spend their time surfing Internet. It includes how much time they spend doing so,for what reason they work with Internet, and what impact it has on students’learning. To find out the facts about Internet,a survey will be conducted among the students, teachers, and administrative staff. The main proposed problems related to Internet at most colleges can be the overuse of it and overspending of time on it.The serious impact resulted from overdoing Internet needs to be discovered in this project. At most colleges in China, one policy is that freshmen are not allowed to possess a computer, and there are some limitations for them to surf online, which is regarded as one kind of protection to them.In this way, they will not be easily exposed to unhealthy films, pictures,or essays. Also, they can spend not so much time on it and their study will not be affected. In the information society, it is necessary to get information quickly. One of the main sources is Internet. Therefore,it would be wiser to let college students make use of Internet and offer them some guidance. Main body For senior college students, overuse of Internet has become a serious problem. Some students stay up very late surfing the lnternet. Some play video games, some do a lot of chatting, and some spend more time watching films. One student said that on average he spent five hours a day surfing the lnternet.Due to the large number of hours spent on Internet, some students have,to some extent, ruined their academic study and their health. At present, the policy is flexible to the senior students at some colleges. To reserve Internet use, it would be wise for the college to set up an appropriate policy on the one hand and carry out education on the other. It will be important to let students know the passive effect the overuse of Internet might bring to them.At the same time, some rules should be set up.For example, there could be a limit on the use of Internet:after11p.m.no students are expected to surf online. Conclusion To sum up,it is imperative for college students to obtain information they need for their academic learning through Internet, and it is also necessary to let the students know the bad impact the overuse of Internet would cause on their study and health. 6.2(for reference only) Introduction The purpose of this project is to find out the main reasons why some families like to send their teenagers to study abroad, and what problems might be brought about to these families and the children.Several articles in various newspapers reported that it had become a social phenomenon for parents to send their children abroad to study. This phenomenon has drawn much public attention. For some families,it has become a big financial burden, and some teenagers could not manage to study and live independently in a foreign country. The project is trying to expose a real picture about it and see how serious problems it might bring about. The project will also try to search for a better policy to help solve this problem.

Unit 6 Keys for 1.3.1 Keys for 1.3.2 2.1.1 Cause: iron Effect: carcinogenesis 2.1.3 1. Firstly; 2.Furthermore; 3. because of; 4. can lead to; 5. causing; 6. cause; 7. due to 2.1.4Notes into a Causal Paragraph

There are several factors to be taken into account when studying why some plants become weak or die. One reason is lack of water. Dryness in the soil causes the leaves to wilt, and may give rise to the death of the plant. On the other hand, too much water may result in the leaves drooping, or becoming yellow. While sunshine is necessary for plants, if it is too strong, the soil may be baked and the roots killed. However, if there is no light, the leaves will become pale and the stems thin. Consequently the plant may die. Keys for 2.2.1 Examples of strengthening a claim: We observed borderline statistically significant elevated risks for … It lends strong support to … We observed a stronger positive association for … We found a positive association between red meat intake specifically and cancers of the esophagus and liver,… In contrast to our findings, childhood leukemia has been positively associated with intake of processed meats in a case-control study. Examples of weakening a claim: Our study suggests a threshold effect for red meat intake on esophageal cancer risk,… It is possible that the referent group had a smaller-than-expected cancer incidence by chance. We observed a suggestion of an elevated risk for advanced prostate cancer with both meat types. This could explain some of the inconsistencies in the literature as most previous studies have not specifically addressed advanced prostate cancer. Although breast cancer risk related to meat intake did not appear to differ by menopausal status in our study, we had very few premenopausal cases (n = 94) and lacked information on hormone receptor status for a large number of cases. Associations between saturated fat and cancer are likely to be related to energy balance in general, whereas iron is thought to contribute to carcinogenesis specifically by generating free radicals and inducing oxidative stress. An earlier start in data collection would have increased the time needed to survey more participants. Ideally, the number of participant would have been more evenly distributed across gender/year in population. A larger sample with diversity would have benefited our results. A decrease in the consumption of red and processed meat could reduce the incidence of cancer at multiple sites. Keys for 2.3 In our study, zinc supplementation did not result in a significant reduction in overall mortality in children aged 1–48 months in a population with high malaria transmission. However, there was a suggestion that the effect varied by age, with no effect on mortality in infants, and a marginally significant 18% reduction of mortality in children 12–48 months of age (p=0·045). This effect was
