Scenes to remember

Tourism and Ecology: learning through Travel

Passion for helping out

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen .Today I’d like to begin with a story.

There once was a physical therapist who traveled all the way from America to Africa to do a study on mountain gorillas. These gorillas are a main attraction to tourists form all over the world, something that put them severely under threat of poaching and being put in zoos. She went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful creatures. She witnessed a scene, one that take us to a place we never imagined, where, in the very depths of the African rain forest, surrounded by trees, flowers, and butterflies, the mother gorillas cuddled their babies.

That memorable scene was in one of my favorite movies, called “Gorillas in the Mist” and based on a true story of Diane Fossey, who spent her life in Rwanda to protect the environment there.

To me, the movie presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our environment.

Today, we live in a world of prosperity but are still threatened by many new problems. Tourism, as one of the most promising industries in the 21st century, provides people with the great opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go. It has become a lifestyle for some people, and become a driving force in GDP growth. It has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity.

But, many problems can occur: Natural scenery isn’t natural any more. Deforestation to heat lodges is devastating Nepal. Oil spills are polluting the oceans. Tribal people are forsaking their native music and dress to listen to U2 on portable CDs and wear Nike and Reeboks.

All these facts have brought us to the realization that we can no longer stand by and do nothing. Encouragingly, the explosive growth of global travel has put tourism in the spot light, which is why the United Nations has made 2002 the year of Eco-tourism, for the first time to bring to the world’s attention the benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy the environment.

Every year, many environmental protection organizations are receiving big and small donations from housewives, plumbers, ambulance drivers, salesman, teachers and children. Some of them can’t afford to send the money but they do. These are the ones who drive the cabs, who nurse in hospitals, who are suffering from ecological damage in their neighborhoods. Why? Because they care. Because they still want nature.

This feeling that I have, ladies and gentlemen, when it feels like it, smells like it and looks like it, comes from a scene to recall and to cherish.

The other night, as I watched the moon linger over the land before it was sent to disappear, my mind was filled with songs, not to the music but to something else, someplace else, a place remembered, a place untouched, a field of grass where nothing seems to have been except deer.

And that unforgettable scene strengthened the feeling that it’s time for us to do something , for our own and coming generations.

Once again, I have come to think of Diane Fossey, because it’s with her spirit, passion, courage and strong sense of the environment that we are taking our next step into the world.

And no matter who we are, what we do and where we go, in our minds, there’s always a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect and fight for.

Thank you very much.

I can’t keep from caring

Honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen,

First of all, let me present a set of data from China Daily.

China’s tourism last year was worth 500 billion yuan, an increase of 10.5 per cent from the year before, and accounting for more than 5 per cent of china’s GDP. According to experts, this number will grow to 8 per cent in 10 years and more than 40 million jobs will be created.

As a student majoring in economics, I can’t help being sensitive to the essential meaning behind these numbers. They mean progress, prosperity, employment and stability.

However, I can’t help but worry about the losses incurred in this, by which I mean the disturbing environmental destruction, which leads to ecological crises. The global environment has changed for the worse during the past few years, and tourism is partly to blame. China is one example, in order to attract tourists, many out-of-the-way places are being built into resorts. Forests are driven away, plants jeopardized, lives of local people disturbed.

If this seems too remote and abstract to you, my own travel experience may give a better picture. Last year, I took a tour around Emei Mountain in Sichuan Province. Like most tourists, I was eager to embrace mature and enjoy its beauty. However, as soon as I got on the bus, the stench of gasoline and the noise of the engine disrupted my appreciation of the wonderful scenery.

When we finally arrived, what I saw was not a beautiful landscape but crowds of people. What I heard was not the melodious singing of birds, but the yelling and bargaining from the gift shops. What I smelled was not the fresh mountain air but the stinking suffocating smoke coming out of small dirty restaurants. Moreover, I could not understand why the lovely monkeys living there had to pose for photos with tourists all day. Why had the beautiful flowers and butterflies become lifeless samples in shop windows. Why was the strongest impression I had trash scattered everywhere on the ground. What I felt was that we tourists are disasters for the environment.

However, this is not the end of the story. Before I left Emei, I met a group of kids there for an eco-tourism programme with the slogan—experiencing, learning and protecting. When I saw their young hands picking up trash from the ground, when I felt their enjoyment and harmonious relationship with the animals, when I found their pure eyes filled with passion and love for nature, I realized that there doesn’t have to be a trade-off between tourism and ecology, because deep within us is an inclination toward natural beauty and a desire to protect it. Yes, environmental problems will eventually ease with the advancement of science and technology. However, increased ecology education and hands-on environmental involvement by our fellow citizens will do even better. To realize this, the best way for us lies in tourism because nothing other than nature can teach us how to love and cherish our sweetest home.

How many roads must a man walk down before they call him a man?

How many times must a man look up before he can see the sky?

How many years must a mountain exist before it’s washed to the sea?

The answer, my friend, is not in the wind. The answer is in ourselives!

One of my dreams: to run a travel agency

This morning, I would like to argue for true ecological tourism, or, eco-tourism. To me, a true eco-tourism is a tour that allows us to express our passion for nature and for our cultural heritage.

I love traveling. One of my most memorable trips was climbing the Great Wall. There, I cherished seeing people of all races and ages gathered on this ancient structure. I cherished seeing these people smiling to each other, and reminding each other to watch their step.

While I love traveling, I’m also sad to see the damage tourism has done to nature and to our relics. Many tour agencies like to label their business eco-tours. But they have cut down trees and filled up rivers in order to build roads, hotels and cable cars so as to attract tourists. And on their tours, some people pick flowers, catch birds and throw away food that might poison animals. This is not eco-tourism at all. True eco-tourism involves responsibility. As we enjoy the beauty of nature, we should also help protect it. Let me share an experience.

Once, I joined some young volunteers on an outing. The excursion took us to the peak of a mountain where we got a beautiful view of the city. We were , however, not ordinary tourists. As we were climbing, we were also picking up the trash left behind by other climbers. Finally, we used large bags to carry all the trash down the mountain.

The excursion was exhausting, but I believe, not a single one of us will ever litter any tourist spot. Moreover, when we were cleaning the mountain slope, we caught the eye of many others. Some of them might see us as foolish, but more of them, I believe, will take note of the need to protect the environment.

My experience as an eco-tourist revealed many misunderstandings. I once telephoned several travel agencies to inquire about eco-tours. Here is how it went:

“Hello! I’m interested in the eco-tour you’ve advertised.”

“Oh, yeah, eco-tour.”

“I’m wondering if we should do anything special as eco-tourists.”

“I’m sorry? … Oh, nothing. Just enjoy the scenery.”

Every conversation ended up with “enjoy the scenery.”No one mentioned “protect wildlife”or “respect local customs”. None of them made any mention of responsibility and obligation on the part of tourists. Like other students, I have had many dreams of what I would like to do after graduation. One of these dreams is to run a travel agency. In this travel agency, I would do three things.

First, I’d like to have a staff of people who love nature as they love their mothers and can pass on to the customers the same kind of love.

Second, I’d like to let customers appreciate the beauty of nature in those natural reservations, safariparks and wild forests and show them how they can contribute in return for the air, water, and nourishment that nature provides.

Last but not least, I’d encourage my customers to work as volunteers as I once did. They would live close to nature by cleaning up the natural resorts and planting trees as mementos of their visit.

I remember when I was standing on tip of the Great Wall, I could see in some distance many bare mountains with no trees there. Eco-tourism should be an experience of learning and offering; it should not be just seeing the famous sites and posing for photos. On the flag of my agency, I would print this motto: Take nothing away except memory; leave nothing behind except trees.

Join my tour, my dear friends. I will make China green—and make the world a better place to live in.

Thank you.

英译汉练习短文6篇· Passage 1 Satiric Literature1 Perhaps the most striking quality of satiric literature is its freshness, its originality of perspective. Satire rarely offers original ideas. Instead, it presents the familiar in a new form. Satirists do not offer the world new philosophies. What they do is look at familiar conditions from a perspective that makes these conditions seem foolish, harmful, or affected. Satire jars us out of complacence into a pleasantly shocked realization that many of the values we unquestioningly accept are false. Don Quixote makes chivalry seem absurd; Brave New World ridicules the pretensions of science; A Modest Proposal dramatizes starvation by advocating cannibalism. None of these ideas is original. Chivalry was suspected before Cervantes2, humanists objected to the claims of pure science before Aldous Huxley3, and people were aware of famine before Swift4. It was not the originality of the idea that made these satires popular. It was the manner of expression, the satiric method, that made them interesting and entertaining. Satires are read because they are aesthetically satisfying works of art, not because they are

Something we were withholding made us weak Until we found out that it was ourselves We were withholding from our land of living, And forthwith found salvation in surrender.

Part V Translation (30 minutes, 15 points) Directions: Translate the following passage into Chinese and put your translation on the ANSWER SHEET. The generation gap is so great in Hong Kong that the teenagers there rarely turn to their parents or teachers for advice on anything. Whether it be sex, AIDS, school worries or family problems, adults are not considered up to the job. Until now, no one has asked Hong Kong youth, “What do you think?” Some understanding of the emotions of Hong Kong’s youth, however, has come from the work of Dr. Jeffrey Day—at the University of Hong Kong. His survey of young people does not focus, for example, on how many drugs they take—but tries to answer the question why. Dr. Day hopes the results, which he plans to explain in full next week, will reveal what troubles—as well as pleases—today’s high-school students. Conclusions will be passed on not only to government departments but back to the schools which took part.
