Reasons Every Teen Should Go To Summer Camp

#1 Improve Interpersonal Skills & Form Close Friendships

In a world where anyone can look up a fact and where machines are replacing even complex workplace tasks, employers need employees who can interact effectively with other people. This is one of the most important skills teens learn at camp. In the non-competitive camp culture, teens build up their

“emotional intelligence” (EQ), their face-to-face communication and relationship skills.

#2 Experience Character Development and Develop Life Skills

Teens develop other important life skills at camp, including independence, responsibility, and decision-making. Teens grow considerably in environment away from their parents where they are forced to live on their own and find their own resources.

#3 Meet Positive Role Models

Walk into any well-run summer camp and you’ll be surrounded by wholesome, outdoorsy young people. Camp offers teens the opportunity to be among young adults who are positive role models and to form close relationships with them. Most camp counselors are hard-working college students who want to serve others. Aren’t they just the kind of young adults you want your teen to become?

#4 Discover Their Best Self

Camp experiences offer teens the chance to step back from the tiring task of academic and competitive sports and instead think about what’s important to them. Many campers become less self-absorbed after spending a few weeks at camp, learning to train their focus on others. They discover new hobbies and avenues to pursue in education and their future careers.

Today's buzz words, which include global warming and zero emissions, are causing everyday people (not just celebrities) to look for ways to reduce their carbon footprint. Based on this trend, entire districts, known as eco-communities, are being designed with green initiatives in mind. Dockside Green in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada is one of these communities. If everything goes according to plan, Dockside Green will be a self-sufficient community. The plans describe a variety of environmental features, some of which have never been seen.

Builders of Dockside Green have the environment in mind with every choice they make. They ensure proper ventilation (通风), and guarantee residents 100% fresh indoor air. Interior and exterior building materials, such as paints and wood, are natural and non-toxic (无毒的). Eco-conscious builders use bamboo wherever possible because it is durable and does not require pesticides to grow.

Energy efficiency is one of the top priorities in eco-communities, such as Dockside Green. Not only do energy-efficient appliances and light fixtures reduce the environmental impact of heating and hot water, they also save residents and business owners money. Dockside Green claims that home owners will use 55% less energy than average residents in Canada. Studies show that people use approximately 20% less energy when they are billed for exactly what they use. In addition, water is treated at Dockside Green and reused on site for flushing toilets.

Planners of eco-communities such as Dockside Green must take the future into account. Dockside Green plans on reusing 90% of its construction waste. They also plan to continue using local suppliers for all of their transport and maintenance needs. This is a great way to reduce emissions. Finally, plans are in the works for a high-tech heating system that will use renewable biomass instead of fossil fuels.

The first two stages of development at Dockside Green have already been completed, and many other plans are in the works. Other smaller eco-villages can be found around the world. Residents of these communities aim to reduce their carbon footprint and be models for sustainable living.

28.The purpose of the article is to ______ .

A.introduce eco-communities

B.describe Dockside Green's plans

C.advertise Dockside Green

D.illustrate sustainable living

29.According to the article, what percentage of energy saving will Dockside Green residents save?

______

A.100%.

B.90%.

C.55%.

D.20%.

30.Bamboo is an environmentally friendly choice for builders because it ______ .

A.provides good air circulation

B.keeps pests out of houses

C.is toxic substances free

D.can be used for a long time

31.What will Dockside Green try to do in the future? ______

A.To find fossil fuel alternatives.

B.To develop an interior transportation system.

C.To use most of construction waste again.

D.To cooperate with other eco-villages.

Described as the world’s most environmentally friendly protein(蛋白质), Solein is made by applying electricity to water to release bubbles of carbon dioxide and hydrogen. Living microbes (微生物) are then added to the liquid to feed on the carbon dioxide and hydrogen bubbles and produce the Solein, which is then dried to make the powder. It’s a chemical change process similar to beer brewing. The dried Solein has a protein content of 50 percent and looks and tastes just like wheat flour.

“It is a completely new kind of food, a new kind of protein, different to all the food on the market today in how it is produced as it does not need agriculture.” Dr Pasi Vainikka, the chief manager of Solar Foods told The Guardian. The process used to produce Solein—changing hydrogen and carbon dioxide is amazing, as the wonder food can be produced anywhere in the world. It’s also 10 time-efficient than photosynthesis (光合作用), and 10 to 100 times more environment and climate-friendly in water use than animal or plant-based food production.

“Solein also contains all the essential amino acid (氨基酸),but because it is produced using carbon and electricity, it does not require large amounts of land to produce, ” the Solar Foods website explains. “Another unique characteristic of Solein is that it is able to take carbon directly from carbon dioxide without needing a source of sugar.”

While Solar Foods does not expect Solein to challenge conventional protein production methods in the next two decades, it does expect it to become a “new harvest” for humanity, which is significant considering so far we have only relied on plants and animals for sustenance. The Helsinki-based company plans to open its first Solein factory at the end of 2021 and increase production to two billion meals per year by 2022.

32.Why is Solein described as environmentally friendly?

A.Because it is man-made by using electricity.

B.Because it contains all the nutrition people need.

C.Because it is made consuming less land and energy.

D.Because it is produced from water and carbon dioxide.

33.What does Solar Foods expect of Solein?

A.It’ll have a rewarding future.

B.It’ll reach consumers in 2020.

C.It’ll challenge traditional protein production.

D.It’ll be a complete replacement for plants and animals.

34.What does the underlined word “sustenance” in last paragraph mean?

A.survival

B.food

C.material

D.support

35.Where is this text most likely from?

A.A textbook.

B.A novel.

C.A magazine.

D.A brochure.

How Disney grew its $3 billion Mickey Mouse business — by selling to adults

In March 2019, Gucci began selling a $4,500 purse in the shape of Mickey Mouse’s head. Between the creature’s round black ears is a small handle embossed (凸印) with the word “Gucci.” On the brand’s website, a male model stares seriously into the camera without the slightest trace of irony (讽刺) that he is, in fact, carrying around the head of a children’s cartoon character.

It’s perhaps the most luxurious Mickey Mouse products designed for adults. 36. Maybelline created makeup sets with packaging covered in Mickey’s face. Uniqlo made dozens of graphic T-shirts with Mickey in various poses. So as not to miss out on the action, Apple launched $300 Beats headphones that paid homage to (向……致敬) the Mouse.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Mickey Mouse and his friends sold $3 billion in merchandise (周边商品) in 2018, a figure that includes both adult and children’s products.

This brings up the question: Why would adults wear items decorated with the face of a smiling rodent in the first place? What accounts for the enduring appeal of this anthropomorphized (拟人化的) mouse, while other Disney characters, such as Anna from Frozen, hardly ever appear in adult products?

Mickey Mouse was big business almost as soon as he made his debut (首次亮相) in Walt Disney’s animated short Steamboat Willie (《汽船威利号》) in 1928. Within five years, Mickey was earning $1 million a year in merchandise sales. These products were largely targeted at children, including stuffed toys, trains, and nursery (托儿所) wallpaper.

Everything changed in the years after World War II. 37. For one thing, Mickey was nearly twenty years old, which meant that the first audience, who enjoyed the cartoons as children, were now in their thirties. Disney was willing to transform Mickey into a symbol of innocence in the postwar years, when people were desperate for something hopeful to cling to.

All the marketing worked. In 1947, products featuring Disney characters brought in $100 million in revenue (收益) in merchandise. In addition to kids’ products, many of the items sold were for adults, such as radios and phonographs (留声机).

38. He made Mickey’s face and body rounder, and eyes larger, like those of a baby. Scientists have shown that adults are more drawn to childlike faces. That look is more likely to subconsciously (潜意识地) produce a greater level of attachment in the viewer.

39. For instance, the company has done everything in its power to ensure that they do not use images of Mickey drinking and smoking.

By and large, though, the symbolism Mickey represents is the one Disney has put forth: that of innocence and positivity. 40. In World War II, people used Mickey to help cope with the horrors before them. This might also help explain why Mickey Mouse has been popular over the past few years when many people are experiencing political instability.

A.Over the decades, Disney is always sensitive about how brands portray Mickey when it licenses his face.

B.Why was this effective at getting adults’ attention?

C.This is perhaps why adults seem drawn to him during times of trouble.

D.At that point, demand for products bearing Mickey’s face among adults decreased.

E.But it’s just one of many that has flooded the market.

F.Disney kept developing the character to make him more and more universally appealing.

G.Disney’s goal was clearly to make the character universally known and loved.

Today, millions of people want to learn or improve their English. Which is good, to study in Britain or in your own country?

The benefits of going to Britain seems obvious. You will listen to the language all the time, surround completely by the language wherever you would go and have to speak English if you are with the local people. In China, there is always possible to speak Chinese in class and the learning is slower. Besides, there are also advantage of studying at home. You don’t have make big changes to your life. And of course, it’s much cheaper than going to Britain.

In my view, for most people without enough money, being at home is their only choice. A most important thing to do in this situation is make good use of your opportunities—speaking only English in class and using English whenever possibly outside the class.
