SECTION 03 61 00

CONSTRUCTION GROUT

NOTE TO SPE CIFIERS:

THE PURPOSE OF THIS GUIDE SPECIFICATION IS TO ASSIST THE SPECIFIE R IN DE VE LOPING A PROJE CT SPECIFICATION FOR THE USE OF BASF BUILDING SYSTEMS PRODUCTS. THIS GUIDE DOCUME NT HAS BEE N PREPARED TO BE P ART OF A COMP LETE PROJECT MANUAL. IT IS NOT INTE NDED TO BE A “STAND ALONE” DOCUMENT, AND IT IS NOT INTE NDED TO BE COPIED DIRECTLY INTO A PROJE CT MANUAL.

THIS GUIDE SPECIFICATION WILL NEED TO BE CARE FULLY RE VIE WED FOR A PP ROPRIATENE SS FOR THE GIV E N PROJECT AND E DITED ACCORDINGLY TO COMP LY WITH PROJECT-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS.

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. Section Includes:

1. Application of non-catalyzed, multi-purpose construction grout containing mineral aggregate.

4. Section 05 50 00 – Metal Fabrications.

5. Section 03 41 00 – Shoring and Underpinning.

1.2 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

A. Performance Requirements: Provide grout material complying with the following requirements:

1. Flow: 126 percent to 145 percent, per ASTM C230 at 5 drops.

2. Volume Change, flowable consistency after 28 days: 0.08 percent, per ASTM C1090.

3. Compressive Strength – Flowable consistency, ASTM C942, per ASTM C1107:

a. 1 Day: 1,500 psi (10 MPa).

b. 3 Days: 5,000 psi (34.5 MPa).

c. 7 Days: 6,000 psi (41.3 MPa).

d. 28 Days: 7,000 psi (58.6 MPa).

1.3 SUBMITTALS

A. Comply with Section [01 33 00] [ __ __ __ ].

B. Product Data: Submit manufacturer's technical bulletins and MSDS on each product.

C. Submit list of project references as documented in this Specification under Quality Assurance Article.

Include contact name and phone number of person charged with oversight of each project.

D. Quality Control Submittals:

1. Provide protection plan of surrounding areas and non-cementitious surfaces.

1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Comply with Section [01 40 00] [ __ __ __ ].

B. Qualifications:

1. Applicator: Minimum of 5 years experience in application of similar systems and products on

projects of similar size and scope.

a. Successful completion of a minimum of 3 projects of similar size and complexity to

specified Work.

2. Manufacturer Qualifications: Company shall be ISO 9001:2000 Certified

3. Manufacturer: Minimum 15 years of experience in manufacturing of surface hardener.

DE LE TE BE LOW IF WORK OF THIS SECTION IS NOT E XTENSIVE OR COMPLE X ENOUGH TO JUSTIFY A PRE-INSTALLATION CONFERENCE. IF RE TAINING, COORDINATE WITH DIVISION 1.

C. Pre-Installation Meetings: Conduct meeting at Project site to comply with requirements in

Section 01 31 00 – Project Management and Coordination.

1. Schedule and convene meeting a minimum of 1 week prior to commencing Work of this

Section.

2. Review requirements for application, including surface preparation specified under other

Sections, substrate condition and pretreatment, minimum curing period, forecasted weather

conditions, special details, installation procedures, testing and inspection procedures,

protection, and repair.

3. Discuss procedures for protecting adjacent finished Work.

1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Comply with Section [01 60 00] [ __ __ __ ].

B. Comply with manufacturer’s ordering instructions and lead-time requirements to avoid construction

delays.

C. Deliver materials in manufacturer's original, unopened, undamaged containers with identification

labels intact.

D. Store tightly sealed materials off ground and away from moisture, direct sunlight, extreme heat, and

freezing temperatures.

E. Store in unopened packaging in clean, dry environment protected from sunlight at 40 degrees F

(4 degrees C). Prevent material from freezing.

1.6 PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Environmental Requirements:

1. Ensure that substrate surface and ambient air temperature are 50 degrees F (10 degrees C)

and 90 degrees F (32 degrees C) for at least 24 hours after application. Ensure that frost or

frozen surfaces are thawed and dry.

2. Allow surfaces to attain temperature and conditions specified before proceeding with surface

hardener application.

3. Do not install over concrete containing calcium chloride or concrete containing aggregate that

has been saturated with salt water.

4. Do not install over concrete containing more than 3 percent air content as measured by

ASTM C138, ASTM C173, or ASTM C231.

5. Perform Work of this Section in well-ventilated areas.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 MANUFACTURERS

B. Substitutions: Comply with Section [01 60 00] [ __ __ __ ].

C. Specifications and Drawings are based on manufacturer's proprietary literature from BASF Building

Systems. Other manufacturers shall comply with minimum levels of material, color selection, and detailing indicated in Specifications or on Drawings. Architect will be sole judge of appropriateness of substitutions.

2.2 MATERIALS

A. Non-catalyzed, hydraulic, cement-based grout containing mineral aggregate.

1. Color: Concrete Gray (after curing).

2. Acceptable Product: Construction Grout by BASF Building Systems.

PART 3 - EX ECUTION

3.1 EX AMINATION

A. Comply with Section [01 70 00] [_______].

3.2 PREPARATION

A. Ensure concrete substrate is clean, strong, and roughened per CSP5-9 per ICRI Guideline 03732 to

permit proper bond.

B. When placing grout under base plates, allow minimum of 1 inch (25 mm) vertic al clearance under

baseplates.

3.3 APPLICATION

A. Comply with grout manufacturer's written instructions for placing grout.

B. Place grout at plastic or flowable consistency and at ambient temperature of 50 degrees F

(10 degrees C).

C. Do not place grout in lifts greater than 6 inch (152 mm) unless grout is extended with aggregate to

dissipate hydration heat.

3.4 CURING

A. Cure exposed grout shoulders by wet curing for 24 hours and by applying recommended curing

compound compliant with ASTM C309 or ASTM C1315.

3.5 CLEANING

A. Use hot water and detergent to clean rollers and spray equipment before material dries.

B. Clean up and properly dispose of debris remaining on Project site related to application.

C. Remove temporary coverings and protection from adjacent Work areas.
