Close relationships, thought to help communication by giving speakers a common context, are actually more likely to make crossed wires than when strangers are involved, a new study suggests.

Because close colleagues and friends already share so much common knowledge that they often use short, ambiguous(模糊的) messages which can lead to misunderstandings.

“People are so used to talking with those with whom they already share a great deal of information that, when they have something really new to share, they often present it in a way that they assume the person already knows it.” says study-team member Boaz Keysar.

Keysar and his graduate student, Shall Wu, trained 40 pairs of undergraduate students to memorize made-up names and descriptio ns of strange shapes. In each pair, the “director” had to communicate the identity of one of the 24 shapes. The partner had to use the information to choose the correct shape from a set of three images on a computer monitor.

Half of the partners studied only the first six shapes, while the others learned the first 18 shapes. The directors, who had memorized all the shapes, were aware of their partners? knowledge levels of the shapes.

In the pairs with the most shared knowledge, the directors were more likely to rattle off (快速背出)shape names, compared with pairs with little knowledge overlap(重合), in which the directors were more likely to describe the actual shapes. Not surprisingly, participants with more shared knowledge were twice as likely to ask for clarification as those with less overlap.

Language itself can be confusing. “The reason all this is happening at all is that language in general is ambiguous,” said Keysar.

He recalls an ambiguous billboard near a stadium holding a Rolling Stones concert that night. The billboard read, “Avoid LSD tonight.” (注:LSD常作”迷幻药”的缩略语) Hmmm? “It was about Lake Shore Drive, and I?m sure the writer of the sign didn?t realize he was being ambiguous,” Keysar said.

“Even though miscommunication can lead to missed meetings or deadlines, people are often unaware when their l anguage is ambiguous,” Keysar added, “We don?t realize we say things that are ambiguous,” he said, “and that?s a problem.”

59. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 mean?

A. Electric wires joined together.

B. Riddles hard to figure out.

C. Misunderstandings in communication.

D. Offensive remarks.

60. In Keysar?s experiment, which of the following gives more accurate descriptions of the

shapes?

A. The “directors” of the pairs with little shared knowledge.

B. The “directors” of the pairs who shared m ore knowledge.

C. The partners whose directors rattle off shape names.

D. The partners whose directors give clear clarifications.

61. It can be inferred from the example of the billboard that _________.

A. most people know what LSD usually refers to

B. local people would not misunderstand the meaning of LSD

C. the writer of the sign means to play jokes on those attending the concert

D. people sometimes ignore the limitation of shared knowledge

62. By this passage, the author mainly wants to say ___________.

A. ambiguous language can lead to misunderstandings

B. familiarity can mess up communication

C. accurate descriptions of identity help guess shapes

D. close relationships do not mean good communication

C

Maybe you?re really busy. Maybe you don?t have much to say. Or maybe you?re just lazy. Not a problem. This free service works by letting you broadcast a group text message to your {fiends? mobile phones from either your own phone, an instant message or an online form at twitter, com. All your notes are then stored and displayed on your personal profile page on the site, which includes links to your friends? Twitter pages, a thumbnail picture of your choice, and a short bio. All this is what the new service Twitter can bring you. Just remember to keep it short: posts are limited to !40 characters, and the topic is, invariably, “What are you doing?”

More often than not, it turns out, Twitter?s 100,00 members--twice as many as it had just a month ago, according to Twitter business development director Biz Stone--are simply killing time. Even Presidential hopeful John Edwards is on it, although he seems to be the only one thinking about more than lunch. As I type this, Caroline is mulling over some Girl Scout cookies, Ian Hocking is “waiting for Jessica to arrive so we can eat!” and Hlantz is “having a nice cup of Soft Starmint tea.”

The chatter (闲话) about Twitter turned into a virtual roar two weeks ago during the South by Southwest Multimedia Festival in Austin, Texas, when the barebones service owned by Blogger

founder Evan Williams, 34, was named the best blogging tool and attendees used it to meet up at parties. Nevertheless, Twitter has been the top term on blog search engine Technorati for the past two weeks.

Plenty of people would happily have Twitter silenced, rather than tolerate the beeping alert for yet another new text mess age. But I?m betting that Twitter will get a lot noisier before netizens move on to the next new thing. We cyberjunkies need a new thrill, and what is better than a service like Twitter that combines social networking, blogging and texting? And if you don?t like it, well, in the words of one Twit from San Francisco, “I?m so sick to death of Twitter-haters. If you don?t like it, why waste your time writing, reading, or talking about it?”

63. This text is intended to __________.

A. point out the virtues and faults of Twitter

B. tell people how to use Twitter to communicate

C. give a general outline of Twitter. com

D. introduce a new and easy way of instant communication

64. According to the text, Twitter is designed mainly for the purpose of ___________.

A. promoting products and services

B. talking about small daily things

C. discussing serious social matters

D. attracting voters for presidential election

65. We know from the text that Twitter may be superior to Blogger in that ________.

A. it limits each us er?s texting under 140 words

B. it saves users? time and thinking

C. it can be easily operated through users? mobile phones

D. it is newly invented by Blogger owner Evan Williams

66. By quoting one Twit from San Francisco, the author implies that ___________.

A. like it or not, Twitter will be accepted by more and more people

B. if one doesn?t like Twitter, he/she can choose not to mention it

C. writing, reading and talking about Twitter is a waste of time

D. twitter users naturally have a strong dislike for non-Twitter users

A teacher in New York decided to honor each of her seniors in high school by telling them the difference they each made. She called each student to the front of the class, one at a time. First she told them how the student made a difference to her and the class. Then she presented each of them with a blue ribbon imprinted with gold letters which read, “Who I Am Makes a Difference.”

Afterwards the teacher told the students to do a class project to see what kind of impact recognition would have on a community. She gave each of the students three more ribbons and instructed them to go out and spread this acknowledgement ceremony.

One of the boys in the class went to a junior manager in a nearby company and honored him for helping him with his career planning. He gave him a blue ribbon and put it on his shirt. Then he gave him two extra ribbons, and told him what it was all about.

Later that day the junior manager went in to see his boss, who had been noted, by the way, as being kind of a bad-tempered fellow. He sat his boss down and he told him that he deeply admired him for being a creative genius. The boss seemed very surprised. The junior manager asked him if he would accept the gift of the blue ribbon and give him permission to put it on him. His surprised boss said, “Well, sure.

The junior manager took the blue ribbon and placed it right on his boss?s jacket above his

heart. Then he gave him the last extra ribbon, and repeated what the boy had told him.

That night the boss came home to his 14-year-old son and sat him down. He said, “The most incredible thing happened to me today. I was in my office when one of the junior managers came in and told me he admired me and gave me a blue ribbon for being a creative genius. Then he put this blue ribbon that says …Who I Am Makes A Difference? on my jacket. He gave me an extra ribbon and asked me to find somebody else to honor. As I was driving home tonight, I started thinking about whom I would honor with this ribbon and I thought about you. I want to honor you.”

“I?m really busy around all day and when I come home I don?t pay a lot of attention to you and sometimes I scream at you, but somehow tonight, I just wanted to sit here and well, just let you know that you do make a difference to me. You?re a great kid and I love you!”

The startled boy started to sob and sob, and he couldn?t stop crying. He looked up at his father and said through his tears, “i was planning on committing suicide tomorrow, Dad, because I didn?t think you loved me. Now I don?t need to.”

67. What does the blue ribbon in the passage indicate?

A. Recognition of you from others.

B. Appreciation for what you?ve done for others?

C. A sign of love and being loved.

D. A symbol of respect.

68. Why was the boss surprised at what the junior manager said and did?

A. Because the boss was usually bad-tempered.

B. Because the junior manager was not afraid of his bad temper.

C. Because he didn?t expect his juniors to appreciate him.

D. Because it embarrassed him to wear such a blue ribbon.

69. The change in the boss implies that ____________.

A. positive comments work better than criticism

B. blue ribbons are a good sign of understanding between people

C. he would never be bad-mannered to his employees

D. everybody can make a difference to the world

70. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

A. Who You Are Makes a Difference

B. Blue Ribbon, a Sign of Acknowledgement

C. Bad Temper Can Be Changed

D. Appreciation Can Prevent Juvenile Suicide IV.任务型阅读

I remember little of the journey which started so early in the morning. I only know that the day seemed extremely long, and that we appeared to travel over hundreds of miles. Calmed by the sound of the coach wheels, I fell asleep. But I had not slept long when the coach stopped, the door was opened, and I saw a servant standing there.

“Is there a little girl called Jane Eyre here?” she asked. I answered “Yes,” and was then lifted out. My trunk handed down, the coach instantly drove away. I looked about me. I could see a house with many windows. There were lights burning in some of them. We went up a wide pebbly path, splashing wet, and were admitted at a door. Then the servant led me through a passage into a room where she left me. I stood and warmed my frozen fingers at the fire and looked around. There was no candle, but the light for the fire showed papered walls, a carpet, curtains and gleaming furniture. Then the door opened, and a tall lady with dark hair, dark eyes entered followed by another who looked younger. “The child is very young to be sent alone,” said she, putting her candle down on the table. She looked at me for a minute or two and then added, “She

had better go to bed soon; she looks tired.”

Led by the younger lady, Miss Miller, through passage after passage, we came, at last to a long, wide room filled with the hum of many voices. There were many tables, and seated all round on benches were a large number of girls aged from nine to twenty. Seen in the dim light of the candles, their number appeared above eighty. Each was dressed in a brown old fashioned dress of cheap material. It was their hour of study.

Miss Miller signed to me to sit on a bench near the door, then walking up to the top of the long room she cried out “Monitors, collect the lesson-books and put them away!”

Four tall girls arose and went round, gathered the books and removed them. Miss Miller again ordered, “Monitors, fetch the supper-trays!” Then tall girls went out and returned presently, each bearing a tray. Some food and water was in the middle of each tray. The food was handed round and everyone drank from the same mug. When it came to my turn, I drank too, for I was thirsty, but I did not touch the food. From there I was taken to my hard bed where I thankfully fell asleep immediately.

Advance with English Module 10 Student's Book 牛津高中英语模块十学生用书 Unit 1 Building the future 第一单元建设未来 Pages 2-3 Reading Part B 第2到3页阅读B部分 M10U1 Reading: Teach a man to fish授人以渔 In 1985, there was little rainfall in Ethiopia, which led to poor harvests and the death of many of the country‘s cattle. The gravity of the situation shocked Bob Geldof, an Irish musician, so he organized a charity concert called Live Aid to raise money for the victims of hunger in Ethiopia. The concert took place on 13 July 1985 in two places—London and Philadelphia—and included the biggest stars of the time. Geldof intended the concert to raise money for hunger relief and to make the public more aware of the problem. In the end, $100 million was raised, which was used to buy food and to provide help with development projects in Ethiopia. The concert also made the headlines around the world, and put great pressure on politicians and statesmen to do something about the problem of world hunger. Live Aid was in 1985, but for many people in the developing world, disease and poverty are still a serious problem. According to the United Nations, ten million people die every year of starvation or problems related to having a poor diet. In fact, hunger is the world‘s number one health risk, killing more people than any disease. In wrestling with the dilemma of worldwide hunger, the United Nations set up an agency called the World Food Programme(WFP) in 1963. The WFP has organized a number of programmes, including the Food-for-Life programme, which sends emergency food aid to countries during times of trouble; the Food-for-Growth programme, which targets people most at risk, such as babies, pregnant women and old people; and the Food-for-Work programme, which helps people without jobs support themselves by giving them work and paying them in food aid. Through programmes like these, the WFP has helped more than one billion people since it was set up. This is beyond doubt an amazing achievement, but is it enough? Today, some developing countries in Africa, Asia and South America stand at a crossroads. While they are seeing great development, they are still poorer than many countries in other parts of the world, and there is a danger that they could fall further behind developed countries. They need help, but the sad truth is that merely sending loaves of bread is not enough. It is only a short-term solution to a long-term problem. There is a saying that goes, ?Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for t he rest of his life.‘ In order to find a permanent solution to this long-term problem, countries need to develop so that they can either grow the food they need, or have enough money to buy this food on the world market. What developing countries really need to do is to stop poverty by fighting the causes of it. One

《牛津高中英语》模块5-Reading--Project课文

31. M5U1. Reading (1)—Secrets and lies Dear Annie, I feel betrayed by my friend Hannah. We have been best friends since primary school and spend almost every day with each other. Sometimes, other children say we are no fun because we are both very academic and like to study, but we like it that way. We are both very hard-working and always get good grades at school. On Monday, we had a surprise math quiz. I thought it was quite easy and was not worried about the results. I must have sounded very proud of myself after the quiz, saying how easy it was and how I was sure to get a good grade. The next day after class, my math teacher told me that I had the lowest grade in the class! I felt so ashamed; I must be really stupid to fail a simple math quiz! Afterwards, I pretended to be cheerful, but Hannah sensed something was wrong. We went to wash our hands in the girls’ washroom before lunch and I admitted how badly I had done. I begged her not to tell anyone else, and she said she would keep my secret. However, the next day, I noticed that my classmates were staring at me as I came into math class and, when I went to
