Two brothers, who lived on adjoining(相邻的) farms, fell into conflict. It was the first serious quarrel in 30 years of farming side by side, sharing machinery, and trading labor and goods as needed. It began with a small misunderstanding and finally it exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence.

One morning there was a knock on John’s door. He opened it and found a man with a toolbox. He was a carpenter(木匠).The carpenter said, “Perhaps you would have a few small jobs here and there I could help with. Could I help you?” “Yes,” said John, “Look across the creek(小溪)at that farm. That’s my neighbor; in fact, it’s my younger brother. Can you see that pile of wood? I want you to build me a fence—an 8-foot fence—so I won’t need to see his place or his face anymore.”

The carpenter said, “I think I understand the situation. Show me the nails and the post-hole digger and I’ll be able to do a job that pleases you.”

John had to go to town, so he helped the carpenter get the materials ready and then he was off for the day. The carpenter worked hard all that day measuring, sawing, and nailing. About sunset when John returned, the carpenter had just finished his job.

John’s eyes opened wide and his jaw dropped. There was no fence at all. It was a bridge—a bridge stretching from one side of the creek to the other. What a fine piece of work it was! The neighbor, his younger brother, was coming toward them, and his hands outstretched. The two brothers stood at each end of the bridge, and then they met in the midd le, taking each other’s hand.

They turned to see the carpenter putting his toolbox onto his shoulder. “No, wait! Stay a few days. I’ve a lot of other projects for you,” said John. “I’d love to stay on,” the carpenter said, “but I have many more bridges to build.”

36. The carpenter knocked on John’s door in order to .

We have met the enemy, and he is ours. We bought him at a pet shop. When monkey-pox, a disease usually found in the African rain forest, suddenly turns up in children in the American Midwest, it’s hard not to wonder if the disease that comes from foreign animals is homing in on human beings. “Most of the infections (感染) we

think of as human infections started in other animals.” says Stephen Morse, director of the Center for Public Health Preparedness at Columbia University.

It’s not just that we’re going to where the animals are; we’re also bringing them closer to us. Popular foreign pets have brought a whole new disease to this country. A strange illness killed Isaksen’s pets, and she now thinks that keeping foreign pets is a bad idea. “I don’t think it’s fair to have them as pets when we have such a limited knowledge of them.” says Isaksen.

“Laws allowing these animals to be brought in from deep forest areas without stricter control need changing.” says Peter Schantz. Monkey-pox may be the wake up call. Researchers believe infected animals may infect their owners. We know very little about these new diseases. A new bug (病毒) may be kind at first. But it may develop into something harmful. Monkey-Pox doesn’t look a major infectious disease. But it is not impossible to pass the disease from person to person.

40. We learn from Paragraph 1 that the pet sold at the shop may _____.

A. come from Columbia

B. prevent us from being infected

C. enjoy being with children

D. suffer from monkey-pox

41. Why did Isaksen advise people not to have foreign pets?

A. We do not know much about them yet.

B. We need to study native animals.

C. They can't live out of the rain forest.

D. They attack human beings.

42. What does the phrase “the wake-up call” in Paragraph 3 most proba bly mean?

A. a morning call.

B. a clear warning.

C. a dangerous animal.

D. a new disease.

43. The text suggests that in the future we _____.

A. should stop buying pets from Africa

B. may easily get infected by diseases from dogs

C. should not be allowed to have pets

D. may have to fight against more diseases

Don’t you think there's something to learn from the tortoise?” He opened his eyes wide. “Do you mea n next when I’m entering for the 60-metre race I should wish that Billy and Tony and Sandy would all fall asleep half-way?”

I was shocked. “But the tortoise didn’t wish the hare would fall asleep!”

“He must have wished that,” Sonny said. “Otherwise how could he be so stupid as to race with the hare? He knew very well the hare ran a hundred times faster than the tortoise did.” “He didn’t have such a wish,” I insisted. “H e won the race by perseverance, (毅力) ,by pushing on steadily”

Sonny thought for a while. “That’s a lie,” he said. “He won it because he was lucky. If the hare hadn’t happened to fall asleep, the tortoise would never have won the race. He could be as steady, as you like, or a hundred times steadier, but he’d never have won the race. Tha t’s for sure.”

D. Sonny did not expect to race with again

50. The writer thinks that his generation_______.

人教版高中英语选修6各单元课文原文

选修6 Unit 1 Art-Reading A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones, starting from the sixth century AD. The Middle Ages (5th to the 15th century AD) During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A conventional artist of this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that ideas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. The Renaissance (15th to 16th century) During the Renaissance, new ideas and values graduallv replaced those held in the Middle Ages.People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life. At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to possess t heir own paintings, so they could decorate their superb palaces and great houses. They paid famous artists to paint pictures of themselves, their houses and possessions as well as their activities and achievements. One of the most important discoveries during this period was how to draw things in perspective. This technique was first used by Masaccio in 1428. When people first saw his paintings, they were convinced that they were looking through a hole in a wall at a real scene. If the roles of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new paints and the new technique, we would not be able to see the many great masterpieces for which this period is famous. Impressionism (late 19th to early 20th century) In the late 19th century, Europe changed a great deal. from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial one. Many people moved from the countryside to the new cities. There were many new inventions and social changes. Naturally, these changes also led to new painting styles. Among the painters who broke away from the traditional style of painting were the Impressionists, who lived and worked in Paris.

6 Unit 1 A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones. Starting from the sixth century AD. The Middle Ages(5th to the 15th century AD) During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A conventional artist of this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created a feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that ideas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. The Renaissance(15th to 16th century) During the Renaissance, new ideas and values gradually replaced those held in the Middle Ages. People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life. At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to possess their own paintings, so they could decorate their superb palaces and great houses. If the rules of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new paints and the new technique, we would not be able to see the many great masterpieces for which this period is famous. Impressionism(late 19h to early 20th century) In the late 19th century, Europe changed a great deal, from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial one. Many people moved from the countryside to the new cities. There were many new inventions and social changes also led to new painting styles. Among the painters who broke away from the traditional style of painting were the Impressionists, who lived and worked in Paris. The Impressionists were the first painters to work outdoors. They were eager to show how light and shadow fell on objects at different times of day. However, because natural light changes so quickly, the Impressionists had to paint quickly. Their paintings were not as detailed as those of earlier painters. At first, many people disliked this style of painting and became very angry about it. They said that the painters were careless and their paintings were ridiculous. Modern Art(29th century to today) At the time they were created, the Impressionist paintings were controversial, but today they are accepted as the beginning of what we call "modern art". This is because the
