Most people put the Christmas lights on their trees at home. I plugged(塞) the lights on my tiny tree into a bag and strapped(捆) the whole thing to the roof of my car. My car was filled with donations. Before I climbed behind the wheel to a big open field, I took a moment to adjust my Santa hat. Finally I was ready. The people I would play Santa for didn't have homes.

Usually my family made extra soup to pass out. But I didn't understand why they cared about strangers. My dad said, "Son, everyone wants to be treated with respect, as a real person. "

When I grew up and moved to the United States, I continued helping others in little ways as my family usually did. But I didn't focus on homeless people at first.

The empty field came into view. The people there were rubbing their hands to stay warm. It made me remember the stranger who knocked on my window at a gas station the winter before.

"Excuse me, sir," a man in his sixties said. "I wonder if you could help a man out. " "How are you?" I asked. "Well," he said, "you see that field across the road? That's where I slept last night. "

I filled my gas tank while he talked about how cold it got at night. When I was leaving, Dad's words came back to me. I handed the man a few dollars and wished him well.

But later I kept thinking about him-a real person who got cold and hungry. I gave food to homeless people. Whenever I gave something I started to talk to them and learn their stories. I could tell they appreciated my listening to them, maybe even more than they appreciated the food I gave them. Only then did I understand what my father had meant.

Scientists have recreated a 1985 study of birds in Peru that shows climate change is pushing them from their natural environment. Thirty years ago, researchers studied over 400 kinds of birds living on a mountainside in Peru. In 2017, researchers looked again at the bird populations. They found that almost all had moved to higher places in the mountain. Almost all had decreased in size. And, the scientists say at least eight bird groups that started at the higher elevations(高地) had died out completely.

The researchers say the birds moved up the mountain because of temperature changes. Orchanges to food sources may have pushed them to go higher. The 1985 research has documented birds and other animals moving up in elevation in reaction to warming temperatures. Mark Urban, a biologist at a university, said rising temperatures and moving to avoid them can lead to extinctionc 灭绝).

In 2016, Fitzpatrick, director and a co-writer of the study passed his notes, photos and

other records to Benjamin Freeman. Freeman has been researching tropical(热带的) birds for

more than lo years. He set out in August and September of 2017 to copy Fitzpatrick's study.

Freeman's team wanted to see how things had changed for the bird groups since 1985.

The average temperatures on the mountain had risen 0. 42 degrees Celsius. His team placed 20 sound recording devices on the mountain to record the sounds of birds that might not easily be seen. Freeman said that the birds moved an average of 98 meters further up the mountain. He concludes that temperature gets the birds to move.

Fitzpatrick noted that birds used to living in areas with little temperature change may be

at risk of extinction because of climate change. He said, "We should expect that what's happening on this mountain top is happening more generally in the Andes, and other tropical mountain ranges. "

It's always nice to have a little help around the house. But what if you could employ the assistance of one of the greatest minds of the 20th century?

That's the idea behind a new robot modeled after Albert Einstein. Called Professor Einstein and standing at just over a foot tall, this personal assistant can tell you the weather and keep track of your schedule like any other robots. With built-in Wi-Fi, Einstein robot has access to brain teasing games, and can answer math problems and science questions. With natural language speech processing, you can actually interact(互动) with Professor Einstein.

And because the robot is connected to the Internet, it is constantly updated with new information.

To help get the perfect replica(复制品) of Einstein, the Hong Kong-based tech company Hanson Robotics turned to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the home of the Albert Einstein archives(档案). "We worked very closely with them to bring the product to market," the company's Dr. Jeanne I.im said.
