All over my garden I've planted nothing but roses, because I especially love the flower. A close friend came for a visit the other day. I told her that she should pick a bunch of roses to beautify her bedroom. I promised that the smell of the roses would be wafted far, far away.

That girl friend of mine, walking into the garden in high spirits, smelt here and there, but in the end she didn't pick a single rose. I said that she could pick many flowers; I told her that I was not a flower farmer and didn't make a living out of them. Saying so, I raised the scissors for the sacrifice of the flowers, but she stopped me, crying no, no, no!

To cut such beautiful roses would hurt one, she said. With her hands seizing at my sleeves, she told me that by no means should they be cut. Roses are the smiling face of the earth, and who could be so iron-hearted as to destroy such a charming

smile?

My mind was shocked: the ugly earth, the tough earth, the plain earth—it is for

the reason of that smile that it wins the care and pity of people.

Not all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget

bad experiences. Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible

physical and emotional scars. They often relive these experiences in nightmares (噩

梦).

Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which will

help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after

a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce, or possibly erase the effect

of painful memories.

In November, 2004, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug

stops the body releasing chemicals that fix memories in t he brain. So far the research

has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that

the memories are erased.

The research has caused a great deal of argument. Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers’ troubling memories after war. But those who are against the research say that changing memories is very dangerous because memories give us our identity, which makes us who we are. They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past.

Some people fear that although the drug would first be used in only very serious cases, it would become more and more common. “People always have the ability to misuse science,”said Joseph LeDoux, a New York University memory researcher. “All we want to do is to help people have better control of memories.”

29. Why do the American researchers develop such pills?

A. They hope to invent a new kind of pills.

B. They hope to do some scientific experiments.

C. They hope to control others’ memories better.

D. They hope to help people forget unhappy things.

30. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “identity” in paragraph 5?

A. personality

B. privacy

C. advantage

D. experience

31. From the passage we can learn that _______.

A. only soldiers are allowed to use the pills

B. nightmares cause bad memories to people

C. the pills are used more and more commonly

D. some people worry about the misuse of the pills

32. What is the best title of this passage?

A. A pill helps forget

B. Argument of a pill

C. Forget past memories

D. A scientific experiment

Complete. Don't scatter (分散) your points. 38_____. This is good organization too.

Courteous. Be polite and friendly rather than overly casual. Give your information nicely even if you are complaining about something. In all letters, treat others as you want them to treat you.

Concise. Make each point as clearly and briefly as you can.

Conversational. This informal style of conversation is really the secret of good writing. 39_____. Such a letter has a natural, friendly tone (语气). Let your personality come through naturally.

Considerate. 40_____ Write about what the reader needs or wants to know. Try to be helpful. This will build good feeling to you.

The seven Cs are about writing letters. But how about school papers? Use the seven Cs too. Write as if you were talking to your teacher or professor. You'll be surprised. You'll almost immediately become a good writer. And you might even enjoy writing from now on.

Dear Jack,

I am so happy to hear from you. A very good way to improve writing is to

read other people’s articles.

If you read plenty of good Chinese articles, you will learn how skillful writers use Chinese to express themselves, and present information in an excellent way. Thus you can improve your ability to use the language. Like other skills, you should improve your writing by practicing it. Keeping a diary is a good idea.

It is natural that beginners make mistakes while writing. But don’t worry.

Finding out why you made the mistakes will help you avoid future mistakes and enable you to write better.

With best wishes,

Yours,

Li Hua

Edwarda O’Bara was a 17-year-old high school student in 1970 when she became sick from her diabetes(糖尿病)medication and slipped into a diabetic coma. Just before she lost consciousness, Edwarda asked her mother, Kaye O’Bara, to never leave her side, and her family never d id. Edwarda’s father, Joe O’Bara, and Kaye took care of their daughter—reading to her, playing her music, making sure she was turned every two hours, bathed, given insulin(胰岛素)and given nourishment through a feeding tube—until their deaths in 1976 and 2008, respectively. After that, Edwarda’s sister Colleen O’Bara took over. Her family’s unending care for her became a story told across the world. Through it all, Edwarda remained in a coma. But to her family and followers she remained alive. Colleen O’Bara described her as “the best sister in the whole wide world.” “She taught me so much, especially after she was in the coma, ” Colleen O’Bara said, “She taught me so much about unconditional love that I couldn’t say I had it before. It’s like I grew up overnight. ” In an announcement of Edwarda’s death posted Thursday on a website, Colleen O’Bara wrote: “Yesterday while taking care of Edwarda I noticed her looking directly a t me and gave me the biggest smile I had ever seen.
