I am a person who would like to speak English well. If you go to a country where English is the first language, I believe you will learn more quickly, so I chose to come to the United States where I am taking ESL clas ses at a uni versity. We have a lot of activities to practice speaking English, and I was impressed by one activity which was called “Electing a President and a Vice-President”.

When the teacher gave us the task, I thought it was a very good topic because everyone here is interested in this topic now. I thought it would be a good chance for us to learn more English because we would have to imitate both the dialog and gestures of the American presidential candidates (候选人)we have recently seen on TV.

We were divided into two groups; there were five students in each group. Each group selected

candidates to run for president and vice-president. The other students in each group supported the candidates. All of us had to prepare speeches.

The president and vice-presidents had to give campaign(竞选)speeches. The other students also had to convince people to vote for their candidates. Speaking in front of the class and trying to persuade them to vote for our teams was an important thing we learned from this activity. We were learning to use future conditions. Here are some examples: If I am elected, I will fight for better education. If she is elected, she will give women more opportunities. Everyone prepared their work together. We helped each other. It made me happy.

On the presentation day, we were excited and had good luck. We had a good teacher to help us relax, and the presentations went well. We shared the experience together, and the teacher took pictures of all of us. We had a lot of fun.

An old farmer lived on a fa rm in the mountains with his young grandson. Each morning Grandpa was up early to read his Bhagavat Geeta. His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to imitate him in every way he could.

One day the grandson asked, “Grandpa! I try to read the Bhagavat Geeta just like you but I don’t understand it, and what I do understand I forget as soon as I close the book. What good does reading the Bhagavat Geeta do?”

The Grandfather quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and replied, “Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of water.”

The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked out (漏出) before he got back to the house. The grandfather laughed and said, “You’ll have to move a little faster next time,” and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again. This time the boy ran faster, but again the same took place.

The old man said, “I don’t want a bucket of water; I want a basket of water. You’re just not trying hard enough,”and he went out to watch the boy try again. The boy again dipped the basket into the river and ran hard, but when he reached his grandfather the basket was again empty. He said, “See Grandpa, it’s useless!”“So you think it is useless?” The old man said, “Look at the basket.”

The boy looked at the basket and for the first time realized that the basket was different. It had been transformed from a dirty old coal basket and now clean, inside and outside.

Humans may not have landed on Mars (火星) just yet, but that isn’t stopping a European company from devising a plan to send four people to the Red Planet within the next few years. This project, called Mars One, aims to send a small group of people to Mars in 2022 and eventually establish a permanent colony (殖民地)on the planet.

“Everything we need to go to Mars exists,”said Mars One co-founder Bas Lansdorp in March 2014. “We have the rockets to send people to Mars, the equipment to land on Mars, the robots to prepare the settlement for humans. For a one-way mission(任务), all the technology exists.” Yet the four astronauts chosen for the trip will be stuck on Mars—forever. And despite Mars One’s thorough planning, there are a number of challenges that may prevent the mission from ever taking place. The biggest road block could be the mission’s huge cost ($6 billion). However, Lansdorp is confident that Mars One will be able to fund the project by selling the broadcast rights for the mission and subsequent experiences living on the planet.

Those broadcast rights will also play a part in helping to select the people who will be sent to Mars. Lansdorp said the company will hold a selection process similar to a reality show. Lansdorp is expecting at least 1 million applications from people around the world. In addition to the cost, several other potential problems could inhibit (阻止) the mission to Mars.

“It’s even more challenging to send people there with life support, with food, with air, with all the other things like books, entertainment, means of communication and of providing for their own resources for a long stay on Mars,”said Adam Baker, senior lecturer in space engineering at Kingston University in London. “The size of the rockets you’d need to do this would be absolutely colossal.”

33. According to Bas Lansdorp, which of the following is NOT TRUE?

A. Robots are prepared for the settlement for humans.

B. He could not come up with the fund for Mars One.

C. We humans have the rockets to send people to Mars.

Christmas is coming up. Everyone is buying and wrapping(包装)gifts. 36 Don’t worry! Read

on and you may come up with some good ideas.

Save as soon as possible. A little bit at a time helps. 37 If possible, put your money into

a bank account.(账户) In this way you will get interest months or years later. 38 In this way

you could have a good plan on how to spend your money.

Figure out the personalit y of the person you’re buying a gift to. 39 That may seem easy to understand. In fact, we often buy gifts that we ourselves think are cool or fashionable. Always

keep the perspective(视角)of the gift recipient(接受者)in mind. For example, if your cousin

is a music lover, consider getting her a newly-released CD of an artist that she might like. If

the CD is the one she has been wanting for a while, the cost is less important. If, for example,

your brother loves traveling, consider getting him a travel guide or a photograph book about a place

he’s interested in going to.

40 Examine his or her room, office and closet for items. This will give you both an idea of

what the person likes and what the person doesn’t have. You may also ask the gift recipient’s

family or friends what sort of gifts they think the person might want to receive.

A.Find out what the person has and doesn’t have.

B.Buy gifts to people that a re important to you.

C.But what if you don’t have too much money to spend?

D.That way you won’t have to worr y about your limited budget.

E.It is a good idea to put away 10 or 20 dollars once or twice a month.

F.Buying a gift successfully depends on knowing what the person likes.

G.You should also work out how many people you want to give a gift to and how much

money you have.
