A wonderful article here on China Daily said that spending for education increases annually (1) about 20%. As a foreign teacher here, I'm wondering how it (2) and what are the results. You can spend more money without being effective.

One of my biggest questions is: Why do children in the USA stay in school 2-3 hours less each day, have very (3) homework, no weekend classes and still do well in education in comparison to most Chinese students?

Now, in my opinion, Chinese students are smart, very intelligent, I know. I teach them. They know how to study hard and for long hours. They know how to stand long classes. Children in the USA wouldn't sit (4) a class of over an hour. 40-50 minutes for most classes at most in the USA.

When Chinese students attend university in the USA, their success rate is nearly 100%. Very, very rare does a Chinese child fail in the USA. Why? The answer is the same—they know how to study hard. So, (5) to Chinese children, American children get far less classroom instruction and far less homework at night. Yet there are over 200,000 Chinese college students (6) schools in the U.S. and that number is growing by 25% annually. In 3 years, there will likely be over 400,000 Chinese students studying in the USA.

Now, I can reason and reconcile (7) Chinese students want to attend college in the USA. But in my year and a half here, I've met parents (8) children are in middle school and the parents want to send them to the USA. It seems to me that in China, long hours, extra hours and extra days of classes is realized as better education. Schools I've taught at here, (9) adding classes and oftentimes, longer classes. In the West, parents, teachers and students would never permit this. They wouldn't think of sending their children to school on Saturday or Sunday. However, in China, it is very common.

I honestly and sincerely don't know the answers to these questions. If Western education is THAT much better, then, shouldn't Western styles of teaching (10) in China? Again, I'm seeking reasonable and intelligent objective answers.

How many times have you complained, “There aren’t enough hours in the day!”?

Holly Gabrielle White, a vlogger who graduated from University of Cambridge, probably (1) . After she began school in August 2016, White started a channel on the video-sharing website YouTube. It records her daily life on campus. Now she has more than 270,000 subscribers to her channel.

In her videos, the 22-year-old gets up at 6:30 am and goes to bed at 10:30 pm every day. In (2) , she balances studying, cooking, house cleaning and exercising. Sometimes she finds time to meet up with friends and speak to her family online.

A similar case (3) college students in China. Months ago, the official Tsinghua University microblog account showed pictures of students’ plans, study notes and daily schedules. In one of them, an undergraduate tightly arranges his daily life. He usually goes to bed at 1:00 am and gets up at 6:00 am. Although he only takes 10 classes a week, the rest of his day will be fully booked. He starts his day by

pre-reading his textbooks at 6:40 am, and (4) a summary of his studies. When he feels like it is hard to stick to his schedule, he writes encouragements to himself, like, “You’re the best”, and “Go for it”.

Both students’ hard work(5) certainly paid off. White was at the top of her 152 other classmates; and the Chinese undergraduate won (6) scholarship four years in a row. The two have something in common. They have regular schedules and get up early to study. They squeeze as (7) into the schedule as they can. More (8) , they learn a way of managing time well and efficiently.

Some may wonder how they can (9) exhaustion, stress and burnout. White’s video Time Management & Organization Tips All Students Should Know may provide an answer. She advises to write our tasks in a set order on a to-do list. We should also know how to avoid and release stress because, “Mental health is as important as our physic al health.” To White, dancing is something she takes as a reward after completing everything on the list. Then enough sleep to rest her body and get ready to do a good job the next day.

Indeed, things must be carefully planned before we act, then “(10) can be reached with half the effort”, as the old Chinese saying goes.

The famous Spanish painter Pablo Picasso once said: “Every child is an artist. The problem he has is how to (1) an artist once he grows up.”

This is both encouraging and discouraging: The fact that we were all born to be artists is certainly exciting, and yet the reality has proven that remaining one is a task that many of us have failed. (2) , some people have seen the problem and want to solve it.

Western educators have suggested that we (3) the thought of “STEAM” instead of “STEM” –traditional “core majors” including science, technology, engineering, and math –since the “A”,(4) stands for “arts”, is just as important. And on April 11, China’s Ministry of Education issued a guideline. Colleges and universities are required to provide more art-related courses and students need to earn a certain number of art credits in order to graduate.

These efforts came after many scientific studies (5) that art education helps students (6) self-confidence and teamwork skills, as well as habits of mind such as problem solving and critical thinking, according to The Washington Post. It’s true that (7) of these skills target specific jobs. But as former US ballet dancer Damian Woetzel told The Atlantic, the purpos e of art is “to give kids the tools to become adults (8) creative, adaptable, and expressive – capable of having their eyes and ears and senses (9) ”.

And we can now see how we lost track of our born “artist self” on our way to growing up: We (10) to keep our capabilities to see, hear and feel, and became blind, deaf and insensitive adults. Hopefully, art education can help turn things around.

Here are some suggestions for you to bridge generation gap(代沟). Don't argue with your parents. Don't get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won't consider your ideas if you are shouting at them You can't express(表达)yourself well if you are angry. Go to some place to cool off. 上海中考英语阅读回答问题技巧讲义

上海市初中毕业生统一学业考试英语试卷 阅读部分 F. Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题): ( 12分) 08年 English is an important international language, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to learn. Many experts have tried to make English easier to learn —but they weren’t always successful. In 1930, Professor C.K. Ogden of Cambridge University invented Basic English. It had only 850 words (and just eighteen verbs) and Ogden said most people could learn it in just thirty hours. The problem was that people who learned Basic English could write and say simple messages, but they couldn’t understand the answers in ‘real’ English! It was also impossible to explain a word if it wasn’t in the Basic English word list. R.E. Zachrisson, a university professor in Sweden, decided that the biggest problem for learners of English was spelling, so he invented a language with the name Anglic. Anglic was similar to English, but with much simpler spelling. ‘Father’ became ‘faadher’, ‘new’ became ‘nue’ and ‘years’ became ‘yeerz’. Unluckily, Anglic never became p opular. In the age of international communication through the Internet, who knows what will happen? ... a new form of English might appear. A large
