On Water Shortage Recently many parts of the country have suffered serious droughts and water-pollution. It reminds people to notice water shortage problem. Actually, that terrible problem has severely affect ed people’s daily life and hindered the development of the global economy.

The following three main factors could account for it. Firstly, with the ever-increasing population as well as the development of agriculture and industry, an increasing amount of water is needed. Secondly, the global tendency of warming up affects annual rainfall. Last but not the least, population and waste of fresh water worsen the situation.

After realizing the seriousness of the

problem, effective measures should be taken to prevent things from getting worse. For protecting water resources, related laws and regulations should be worked out and enforced. Besides, people should enhance their awareness of saving water in daily life.

overnment Officials’ Shocking Words In recent years, floods of shocking words have burst into our society out of the mouths of some government officials. Those frequently-reported astonishing words have shocked us a lot and aroused significant concerns among the public.

Generally speaking, the following two reasons mainly account for this controversial issue. The first one lies in the government officials themselves. There are increasing number of officials failing to behave appropriately in public due to lack of social etiquettes and poor education, which result in their improper remarks. The other one is the misinterpretation of the mass media. Lots of media exaggerate the facts, even defame some of the remarks made by the government officials so as to

win the mass attention.

I do hope the government officials can build up an upright and respectable image for the public and minimize the negative influence of those stunning words.

Online Shopping

Being online is no longer something strange in our life. To some degree, it has become part of our daily life when we search for information online and communicate with friends through email and chatting software on a daily basis. But recently another helpful online activity has become very trendy. That is online shopping.

Why could online shopping be so popular within such a short period of time? Among other reasons, the quick development of the Internet should be an essential one, which makes our dreams of shopping at home possible. Another underlying reason is the fast pace of life in modern society. Many people can’t afford the time and energy touring from one shop to another, so the online stores just come to their aid, offering as wide a variety of goods as the department stores lined up the crowed commercial streets. Besides, the minimum cost of the shop-owners helps bring down the price of the goods available, which can also be money-saving for shoppers.

While I appreciate the new form of shopping, I don’t turn a blind eye to the risks involved in online shopping, such as security of your personal information and credit cards and the quality guarantee of products. In one word, we need to be cautious when enjoying the convenience of online shopping.

On Low-carbon Lifestyle

Nowadays, “low-carbon lifestyle” (1) is popular with an increasing number of people. We can (2) find expression in the fact that more and more commuters are using public transportation system instead of private cars.

Unit 6 A Letter to the Teacher

Dear Mr. Li,

I am writing to express to you my wish to work as a teacher in the under-developed areas in the West of China and hope that you can give me your opinins or advice.

Recently, the increasing number of college graduates in the developed areas has posed great pressure on the employment there. College students, from developed areas or under-developed areas, tend to choose to stay in big cities in order to achieve themselves. With the overflow of knowledgeable elites and increasing unemployment rate in big cities, our under-developed areas are now, however, confronted with lack of talents, which holds back the economic and cultural development of those areas. And if such a phenomenon continues, our society will witness a wider gap between the developed and the under-developed areas.

Faced with this problem, our government has launched a series of projects which call for college volunteers to devote themselves to the under-developed regions by bringing them new knowledge and thoughts, and aid-education is one of them. In my opinion, China’s educational development can’t be isolated from each individual and we college students should take the lead in response to the appeal for devoting ourselves to the development of our country as a whole.

That is why I want to sign up for the program of aid-education. I want to offer aid to children in poor areas after graduation, and I’m ready to meet the harsh living conditions and other difficulties there. Looking forward to your early reply!

Y ours respectfully,

Li Ming

Income Sources of College Students

As can be seen from the chart given above, the income sources of the American and the Chinese students come from almost the same channels: namely, parent, part-time job and scholarship. However, the percentage of each is quite different. Half of the American students’ income is from their parents and fifteen percent from the scholarships granted by colleges and universities. Chinese students, on the other hand, get ninety percent from their parents.

There are two main reason for the phenomenon. American students are taught to be independent right from childhood while Chinese parents care so much for their children that it is almost unthinkable for college students to live on their own. In addition, Chinese students have fewer opportunities to find part-time jobs.

As far as I am concerned, as college students, we should stand on our own feet. Working part-time to support ourselves should be encouraged so long as our study is not affected, for it not only cultivates our ability to live independently and relieve our parent s’ financial burden but also offers us a chance to be exposed to society and acquire much social experience, which is beneficial to our future career. Let’s follow American students.
