One of the most famous people in ancient China was a great philosopher called Confucius (Kong Zi).

Philosophy (哲学) is the search for knowledge and understanding of nature and meaning of the world and of human life. In other words, it’s about thoughts that teach people lessons about rules and life. Confucius is famous for his philosophy because he made many famous sayings in ancient China that helped many people learn about nature, the world, and human behavior (行为). He also helped the government and the emperor by teaching them lessons on how the emperor should rule his country successfully.

Confucius was born in a poor family in 551 BC. His father died three years after Confucius was born, so the family lived a much harder life.

Later, in order to make Confucius receive a good education, his mother took him to Ludu where his grandpa lived. The city was well developed at that time. His mother died when Confucius was 17.

Confucius ever worked as a keeper of a market. And then he was a farm worker who took care of parks and farm animals. When he was 20, he worked for the leader of his area because of his hard work.

Teachers say that the digital age has had a good influence and a not-so-good

influence on American teenagers. More than 2,000 middle school teachers took an online survey. Researchers also spoke with teachers in some groups. Most teachers think the Internet and digital search tools have had a mostly positive (积极的) influence on their students’ research habits and skills. But at the same time, some teachers also point out some problem s in teenagers’ using digital search tools.

The Pew Internet Project did the survey with the College Board and the National Writing Project. Judy Buchanan is the director of the National Writing Project and a co-writer of the report. She says digital research tools are helping students learn more, and learn faster. “Both teachers and students really welcome these tools because they make learning exciting. And the goal（目的）is to really help students become creators of something meaningful, and not just users of the online information.”

But one problem the survey found is that these technologies make teenagers have short attention spans (持续时间). As there is lots of information about different subjects on the Internet, teenagers’ attention is easily drawn away from their research.

Another problem the survey found is that many students trust the information they find on the Internet too much. Judy Buchanan says these students have not developed the skills to judge (判断) the online information. They need to learn a lot to tell if the information is believable. It’s something that really has to be paid attention to.

One more problem the survey found is something that might not seem like a problem at all: being able to quickly find information online. Many students think “doing research” now means just doing a quick search on Google. Teachers say the result is a drop in the wish and ability of their students to work hard to find answers. That is, they are depending too much on search engines and do not make enough use of printed books or research librarians.

Many teachers also say that the Internet makes it easy for students to copy work done by others instead of using their own abilities.

There are some very good inventions which, for one reason or another, don’t become popular. These inventions should be better known, even though I think that some of them are crazy. Let’s have a look at some of these inventions and see if you agree that they should be more successful.

The Australians had a great idea to stop people from drinking and driving. The idea was that if a driver wanted to start the car, she or he would have to blow into a bag first. If there was too much alcohol (酒精) in their breath, the car wouldn’t start. It sounded like a great idea to me, but people said that they might need to drive the car in an emergency (紧急情况) even if they had drunk too much alcohol. Another idea I liked was an invention by a scientist who thought his children watched too much TV. He connected the TV to an exercise bike so that the electricity to power the TV was produced by the bike. If the children wanted to watch a lot of TV, they had to pedal (踩动) very hard. I found another invention on the Internet which encouraged good habits. Believe it or not, this invention was an ashtray (烟灰缸)

whi ch spoke to you when you lit a cigarette! The “voice” of the ashtray was started by the heat from the cigarette and reminded you how dangerous it is to smoke.

One of the strangest inventions I have come across is a bicycle which can cross rivers! The idea was that when you came to a river, you could inflate a huge plastic ball all around the bike. You would then get into the ball which would float on the river while you pedaled the bike inside the ball! Why not use a bridge instead? A friend of mine at school once bought a strange pair of football shoes. On the bottom of the shoes there was a rotating pad of studs (转动钉垫). The idea was that you would change direction more quickly if the studs rotated with you. The problem was that every time you stopped you changed direction whether you wanted to or not! I think he wore those shoes twice! One thing I would like is a baseball cap with a built-in radio so you can listen to sport all day with your hands free. While we are on the subject of sport, the Americans invented a kind of robot for sports fans. If you were watching your team on TV on your own, you could press a button and the robot would do “high fives” with you! Fantastic! I wonder if you have any good ideas for inventions like these.

Hi Geoff,

Don’t be surprised by what I’m going to tell you. Last week, I became a parent! Calm down, Geoff. This was only a project we did at school, but let me explain.

Every week, our teacher gives us a new topic to discuss in class. Last Monday, however, he asked us a very interesting question —“Do you think it is difficult to be a parent?” Some of the students said they thought it was easy, as parents never have to do any homework! Our teacher said he wouldn’t tell us the answer. He said he would let us b e “a parent” for a week. He was sure we would have the answer by the end of the week.

The rest of the lesson was spent making flour babies. We first took some bags and filled them with flour (面粉) in order to make the “babies” as heavy as real ones. We then tied the bags very tight, so the flour would not fall out. After that, we used cardboard (纸板) to make some arms, legs and a face for our flour babies, and then dressed them in old pieces of clothing. My baby looked so strange, as I

am not very good at art, but it was great fun.

When we had finished, our teacher gave us all notebooks and told us we had to write down our experience with the babies for the whole week. We were told we had to carry them round with us every day, and look after them like real babies! That was really difficult. For example, one of my friends has quite a bad memory, and left his flour baby on the bus by accident. Another of my friends carried the baby upside down (we are supposed to carry them like real babies, with our arms under their “necks” at all times.)

We also had to take the flour babies home with us, as well. My parents found it quite funny, as I was supposed to feed the baby in the evening, and then get it ready for bed. After doing that and finishing my homework, there was no time to chat with my friends on the phone, nor watch my favorite television programmes.

Every evening, I was so tired that I fell asleep very quickly. Yet only a few hours later my alarm clock woke me up. For that week, I had to get up three times every night to feed the flour baby! In the end, I got so little sleep that I had black bags under my eyes.

It was a difficult time, but now the project is finished. I feel I have learnt that it is not easy to be a responsible (负责任的) parent. I think it also gave me a new perspective (观点) on what my parents have done for me.
