Culture Difference Nowadays, Globalization is changing the world to be a smelting furnace, more and more common things have taken form between the East and West of China. However, there are also many differences, particularly in the area of culture. Now we will take the culture differences between China and America for example to explain the difference between the East and the West. In my mind, the most different area is the culture of diet. Obviously, the foods people eat in the two places are much different. While people in America are enjoying their bread, Chinese focus their attention on rice and cooked wheaten food. American dishes emphasize the high energy which are storage in various kinds of meat and fishes, so when they eat the dishes of China, they often consider it to be grass. Differences between the drinks are also part of the difference in diet. To Chinese, tea is one of the preferences, but coffee and cola is the American favorite, although they are also popular in China. This is a traditional manner which will never be changed. The differences also exist in the custom of diet as well as the food cooking. Chinese people will try their best to prepare the most delicious food, and always persuade their guests to eat more, even they have gotten enough, while the people in America believe their guests when they say‘No, thanks, I am full.’, and will take them into eating any more. Focusing on the reasons of the differences, we will find the different regions which they lie in are very important. For having different climates and location, various histories and culture backgrounds, the two areas formed the discrepancy in many aspects, just like the inside information of culture between the Confucian School and the culture of Ancient Greece. It has been a question for many years, especially in China. What caused this situation? I think if we want to get the reason, we should get to know the similarities and the differences between the both. Firstly, we should realize that, although the countryside’s location differs from the city, the countryside have a number of its own culture. For instance, the relationship between the neighbours in the countryside is always harmony and they usually contact with each other closely. However in the city, everyone has a large number of work everyday. They don’t have time and chance to communicate with his or her neighbours. Sometimes they can’t recognize their neighbours on the way to work. Apart from tihis, the coutryside has such a good environment which the city never poccessed. No factory and much vegetation makes the countryside has much more fresh air than the city. Despite of this, compared to the countryside, the city also has many advantages. Because the countryside has less factory and automobiles, the trasportation in city is much more bustling than it in the countryside. Time orientation There are cultural variations in how people understand and use time. Researchers have found that individuals are divided in two groups in the ways they approach time. Monochronic individuals are those who prefer to complete one task at a time. For them, task-oriented time is distinguished from socio-emotional time. In other words, there is a time to play and a time to work. These individuals value punctuality, completing tasks, and keeping to schedules. They view time as if it were linear, that is, one event happening at a time. Examples of monochronic cultures include the U.S., Israel, Germany, and Switzerland. In certain cities in the U.S., it is not uncommon for us to find timetables or daily schedules for buses or trains. If the bus is to be at a certain stop at 10:09 PM, for example, one can expect that to happen at the designated time, give or take a minute.

So we separate the English into American English and British English. American English and British English are the same in many aspects, but they also have many differences in details. It is a hard work to distinguish all the differences between them. In this essay, I want to distinguish the differences on pronunciation of common words between American English and British English. As students we are, we always use British English as the common one, and we always think that we use the native British pronunciation in speaking English in our daily communication. But, I want to say that, as American English and British English have many similarities and also have many fine distinctions, we always can?t distinguish them exactly. So, we can see some examples that students say both American English and British English in a sentence but they don?t realize. The mixture of American pronunciation and British pronunciation is commonly seen in our daily communication and that makes the pronunciation not be native. So in my opinion, distinguish the differences on pronunciation of common words between American and British English clearly is very important. Through recognize their own characters of pronunciation, we can know them better and use them better and more exactly. Now, let us start to make a distinction between their different pronunciations. As for the phoneme, there are two questions between American English and British English?s pronunciations. One is that the same phoneme has differences in allophonic transcription between American English and British English; the other is that American English and British English use different phoneme in the same word, i.e. the differences on pronunciation. 1. British people always pronounce with clear articulation and a mellow and full tune, but American people?s mouths are often wide open and their pronunciation is a little flatter and leaning forward. That is one of the most common differences between American English and British English. For example, [ɑ], [ɑ:] and [?], these three phonetic symbols have different use in the same word between American English and British English. British people pronounce [ɑ] or [ɑ:] in a word, but American people pronounce [?]. As for the simple word ask, in British English, its phonetic symbol is [ɑ:sk], but in American English, the phonetic symbol become [?sk]. When British people pronounce this word, their pronunciation is leaning backward, but American people?s pronunciation is leaning forward, that is the different. There are also many examples that can explain this difference.
