A

(2019·天津卷,D) Would you BET on the future of this man?He is53years old. Most of his adult life has been a losing struggle against debt and misfortune.A war injury has made his left hand stop functioning, and he has often been in prison.Driven by heaven-knows-what motives,he determines to write a book.

The book turns out to be one that has appealed to the world for more than350years.That former prisoner was Cervantes, and the book was Don Quixote(《堂吉诃德》).And the story poses an interesting question:why do some people discover new vitality and creativity to the end of their days, while others go to seed long before?

We've all known people who run_out_of_steam before they reach life's halfway mark.I'm not talking about those who fail to get to the top.We can't all get there.I'm talking about people who have stopped learning on growing because they have adopted the fixed attitudes and opinions that all too often come with passing years.

Most of us,in fact, progressively narrow the variety of our lives. We succeed in our field of specialization and then become trapped in it.Nothing surprises us.We lose our sense of wonder. But,if we are willing to learn, the opportunities are everywhere.

The things we learn in maturity seldom involve information and skills. We learn to bear with the things we can't change. We learn to avoid self-pity.We learn that however much we try to please, some people are never going to love us—an idea that troubles at first but is eventually relaxing.

With high motivation and enthusiasm,we can keep on learning. Then we will know how important it is to have meaning in our life. However,we can achieve meaning only if we have made a commitment to something larger than our own little egos(自我),whether to loved ones,to fellow humans,to work,or to some moral concept.

Many of us equate(视……等同于)“commitment”with such“caring”occupations as teaching and nursing. But doing any ordinary job as well as one can is in itself an admirable commitment.People who work toward such excellence—whether they are driving a truck,or running a store—make the world better just by being the kind of people they are. They've learned life's most valuable lesson.

Forests are always losers at the Olympics, and that's unlikely to change anytime soon.

For the winter games in Pyeongchang,ROK,virgin forest was destroyed on Mount Gariwang to accommodate ski runs. For the2022Winter Olympics in Beijing,a ski run is set to wipe out part of the Songshan National Nature Reserve. And let's not forget the240acres of Atlantic Forest that were leveled for the2016games in Rio de Janeiro to make way for a golf course.

For the upcoming Tokyo games, environmental and human rights advocates have been raising alarms about the use of tropical wood to build the New National Stadium.Activists have fought against such environmental destruction. The damage is often permanent, threatens endangered plants and animals and,in some cases, causes conflicts with native people. But frequently the country's organizing committee, and the International Olympic Committee(IOC)have found ways to make it reasonable—despite a paragraph in the Olympic Charter that states that the IOC's role is to“encourage and support a responsible concern for environmental issues.”

“As it stands now,the IOC has little authority over a city's local organizing committee, which finally plans the event,”Chappelet, professor of public management at the University of Lausanne, told Earther.“Even if the IOC is dissatisfied with the way host cities have prepared for the games, they have no built-in systems to supervise(监督)them so that they strictly follow the Olympic Charter. The only thing they can do if they're not happy is to withdraw the right to organize the game. But the IOC could include more enforcement(执行)systems into the contract (合同)they make with the host city,”he added. That contract must be signed and obeyed by everyone. Those who break it could be fined.

Boykoff, the author of several books on the Olympics, suggested a similar solution.“The IOC could insist that host cities prioritize their ecological promises, but instead they look the other way, time and time again,”he said.

6.What is Paragraph2mainly about?_D__

A.Popularity of the Olympics.

B.Different needs of the Olympics.

C.Importance of protecting forests.

D.Problems caused by the Olympics.

7.What is the IOC expected to do according to the Olympic Charter?_D__

A.Lead the fight against destruction.

B.Withdraw the rights of host cities.

C.Ban the destruction of the environment.

D.Promote a responsible concern for the environment.

根据第三段最后一句话中的“...the International Olympic Committee (IOC)have found ways to make it reasonable...states that the IOC's role is to‘encourage and support a responsible concern for environmental issues.’”

8.What does the underlined word“they”in the text refer to?_C__

A.The IOC.B.Built-in systems.

C.Host cities.D.The games.

根据第四段该画线词前面的“Even if the IOC is dissatisfied with the way host cities have prepared for the games, they have no built-in systems to supervise(监督) them...” 由此推断后面so that引导的从句中的they指代的是前面的host cities,故选C。

9.What can be the best title for the text?_B__

A.IOC Stresses Its Active Role

B.Prized Forests Lost Big

C.Perfect Solutions Are Found

D.Conflicts Arise at the Olympics

The underlined word ―…‖ in the second(third…) paragraph refers to(means) ______. By saying ―…‖ in the first(second…) paragraph, the author means that ______. In paragraph …, ―…‖ can be replaced by ―______‖. The meaning of ―…‖ in paragraph… is related to ______. Which of the follow ing has the closest meaning to…(paragraph…)? The underlined sentence in the … paragraph probably means that _____. Annealing is a way of making metal softer by heating it and then letting it cool very slowly. It will be very hard but also very brittle — that is, it will break easily. The herdsman, who looks after sheep, earns about 650 yuan a year. The underlined words ―tipping points‖ most probably refer to ―_______‖. A. freezing points B. burning points C. melting points D. boiling points 【解析】C。 In his book, he had challenged readers to make deep cuts in personal emissions to keep the world from reaching extremely important tipping points, such as the melting

The modern age of medicine began with the stethoscope, an instrument for listening to a patient’s heartbeat and breathing. 2.根据对比关系猜测词义 当句中含有but, however, yet, though, although, on the other hand, instead,in contrast等表示转折意义的词时,前后句含有对比意义,据此可以猜测生词的词义。 例:Andrew is one of the most supercilious men I knew. His brother, in contrast, is quite modest. 3.根据因果关系猜测词义 表示因果关系的信息词有:because, so, therefore, thus, so…that等。 例:I found I was paying too much attention to the job and thus sacrificing my study time. 4.根据同等关系猜测词义 表示同等关系的信息词有:and, or, or rather, to be more exact, namely, that’s to say, in other words, that is等。 例:His secret for a living and healthy life has been well publicized---no alcohol, no cigarette and no anger. 析:由a living and healthy life以及同类名词cigarette可推测alcohol意为“酒精”。 5. In our competitive world of today, examinations have a highly selecting or filtering role. You can take any of the periodicals: The World of English, Foreign Language Teaching in School, or English Learning.

What does the underlined word "..." in Paragraph...refer to? What does the underlined phrase "..." in Paragraph...refer to? What does the underlined word "..." in Paragraph...mean? What does the author mean by "..." in Paragraph...? Which of the following can replace the underlined word "..." in Paragraph...?

高考英语复习:阅读理解词义猜测题 [层级一真题题组] A (2018·北京卷,D) Preparing Cities for Robot Cars The possibility of self-driving robot cars has often seemed like a futurist's dream, years away from materializing in the real world.Well, the future is apparently now.The California Department of Motor Vehicles began giving permits in April for companies to test truly self-driving cars on public roads. The state also cleared the way for companies to sell or rent out self-driving cars, and for companies to operate driverless taxi services.California,it should be noted, isn't leading the way https://www.wendangku.net/doc/5b15950439.html,panies have been testing their vehicles in cities across the country. It's hard to predict when driverless cars will be everywhere on our roads. But however long it takes, the technology has the potential to change our transportation systems and our cities, for better or for worse, depending on how the transformation is regulated. While much of the debate so far has been focused on the safety of driverless cars (and rightfully so),policymakers also should be talking about how self-driving vehicles can help reduce traffic jams, cut emissions(排放)and offer more convenient, affordable mobility options. The arrival of driverless vehicles is a chance to make sure that those vehicles are environmentally friendly and more shared. Do we want to copy—or even worsen—the traffic of today with driverless cars?Imagine a future where most adults own individual self-driving vehicles. They tolerate long, slow journeys to and from work on packed highways because they can work, entertain themselves or sleep on the ride, which encourages urban spread. They take their driverless car to an appointment and set the empty vehicle to circle the building to avoid paying for parking.Instead of walking a few blocks to pick up a child or the dry cleaning, they send the self-driving minibus. The convenience even leads fewer people to take public transport—an unwelcome side effect researchers have already found in ride-hailing(叫车)services. A study from the University of California at Davis suggested that replacing petrol-powered private cars worldwide with electric,self-driving and shared systems could reduce carbon emissions from transportation 80% and cut the cost of transportation infrastructure (基础设施) and operations 40% by 2050.Fewer emissions and cheaper travel sound pretty appealing. The first commercially available driverless cars will almost certainly be fielded by ride-hailing services, considering the cost of self-driving technology as well as liability and maintenance issues(责任与维护问题).But driverless car ownership could increase as the prices drop and more people
