I am 37 to be with you today 38 your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I 39 graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I?ve ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That?s it. No big deal. Just three stories.

The first story is about connecting the dots.

I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as

a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So 40 did I drop out?

It started 41 I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed (未婚的) college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so 42 was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a 43 in the middle of the night 44 : “We have an45 baby boy; do you want him?” They said: “Of course.” My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She 46 to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented (变宽容) a few months later when my parents 47 that I would someday go to college.

And 17 years later I 48 go to college. But I naively (天真地) chose a college that was almost as 49 as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents? savings were being s pent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn?t see the value in it.

I had no idea 50 I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, 51 looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the 52 classes that didn?t 53 me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

It wasn?t all romantic. I didn?t have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends? rooms. I returned coke bottles for the five-cent deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I 54 it. And much of what I stumbled into (蹒跚而行) by following my curiosity and intuition 55 to be priceless later on. …

I still needed a lot of things… I also wanted to

make places to put all my food, and all my tools and

guns.

I also went out every day,and I always had my

gun with me. Sometimes I killed a wild animal, and

then ________1________.

But when it got dark,I had to go to bed because I had no light. I couldn't read or write because I couldn't see. But in the end,I learnt how to use the fat of dead animals to make a light.

… And so my life went on. Every month I learnt to do or to make something new. But I had troubles and accidents too. Once there was a terrible storm with very heavy rain. The roof of my cave fell in,and nearly killed me!I had to build it up again with many pieces of wood.

_______2________. I cooked it over a fire or dried it in the sun. So I always had meat during the rainy months when I could not go out with a gun. I learnt to make pots to keep my food in. But I wanted very much to make a harder, stronger pot—a pot that would not break in a fire. I tried many times, but I could not do it. Then one day I was lucky. I made some new pots and put them in a very hot fire. They changed colour, but did not break. I left them there for many hours, and when they were cold again,I found that they were hard and strong. That night I was very happy. I had hot water for the first time on the island.

By then,I also had my own bread. That was luck, too. One day I found a little bag. We used it on the ship,to keep the chickens' food in. There was still some of the food in the bag,and I dropped some of it onto the ground. A month later I saw something bright green there, and after six months I had a very small field of corn. I was very excited. Perhaps now I could make my own bread!

It was easy to say,but not so easy to do. It is a lot of work to make bread from corn. Many people eat bread, but how many people can take corn from a field and make bread out of it without help?I had to learn and to make many new things. ________3________.

During all this time I never stopped thinking about escape. When I travelled across to the other side of the island,I could see the other islands, and I said to myself,…Perhaps I can get there with a boat. Perhaps I can get back to England one day. ?

So I decided to make myself a boat. I cut down a big tree, and then began to make a long hole in it. It was hard work, but about six months later,I had a very fine canoe. Next,I had to get it down to the sea. How stupid I was!Why didn't I think before I began work?Of course, the canoe was too heavy. I couldn't move it!I pulled and pushed and tried everything, but it didn't move. ________4________.

That happened in my fourth year on the island. In my sixth year I did make myself a smaller canoe, but I did not try to escape in it. The boat was too small for a long journey, and I did not want to die at sea. The island was my home now,not my prison, and I was just happy to be alive.

There were always things to do or to make. I learnt to make new clothes for myself from the skins of dead animals. They looked very strange,it is true, but they kept me dry in the rain…

Scientists note that babies are strongly influenced by their environment. They say a baby will smile if her mother does something the baby likes. A baby learns to get the best care possible by smiling to please her mother or other caregiver. This is how babies learn to connect and communicate with other human beings.

One study shows that babies can learn before they are born. The researchers placed a tape recorder on the stomach of a pregnant(怀孕的)woman. Then, they played a recording of a short story. On the day the baby was born, the researchers attempted to find if he knew the sounds of the story repeated while in his mother. They did this by placing a device in the mouth of the newborn baby.

The baby would hear the story if he moved his mouth one way. If the baby moved his mouth the other way, he would hear a different story. The researchers say the baby clearly liked the story he heard before he was born. They say the baby would move his mouth so he could hear the story again and again.

Another study shows how mothers can strongly influence social development and language skills in their children.

Researchers studied the children from the age of one month to three years. The researchers attempted to measure the sensitivity(敏感)of the mothers. The women

were considered sensitive if they supported their children?s activities and did not interfere(干扰)unnecessarily. They tested the children for thinking and language development when they were three years old. Also, the researchers observed the women for signs of depression.

The children of depressed women did not do as well in tests as the children of women who did not suffer from depression. The children of depressed women did poorly in tests of language skills and understanding what they hear. These children also were less cooperative and had more problems dealing with other people.

The researchers noted that the sensitivity of the mothers was important to the intelligence development of their children. Children did better when their mothers were caring, even when they suffered from depression.

60. What is the purpose of the experiment in which newborn babies heard the stories?

A. To prove that babies can learn before they are born.

B. To prove that babies can learn on the first day they are born.

C. To show mothers can strongly influence intelligence development in their babies.

D. To indicate early education has a deep effect on the babies? language skills.

61. Which group of children did the worst in tests of language skills?

A. The children of depressed mothers who cared little for their children.

B. The children of women who did not suffer from depression.

C. The children of depressed but caring mothers.

D. Children with high communication abilities.

62. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the factor that influences the intelligence development in babies?

A.The environment .B.Mother?s sensitivity .

C.Their peers(同龄人) . D.Education before birth .

63. The main purpose of the advertisements is to give information about .

A.weekend activities B.a holiday celebrations

C.the price for the meals in big hotels D.Egg Painting Competition

64. It can be learned from the advertisements that the children alone under 12 years can enjoy themselves for free in .

A.Lido Holiday Inn B.Palace Hotel C.Scitech Hotel D.Hilton Hotel

65. If you want to have an Easter meal on March 28, which hotel can you go to?

A.Scitech Hotel and Lido Holiday Inn B.The Palace Hotel and Hilton Hotel C.Hilton Hotel and Lido Holiday Inn D.Scitech Hotel and the Palace Hotel

66. If you have Easter Brunch in Hiton Hotel you will pay RMB for it.

A.195 B.224.25 C.165.75 D.97.5

D.

Where is that noise coming from? Not sure? Try living with your eyes closed for a few years.

Blind people are better at locating sounds than people who can see, a new study says, without the benefits of vision the ears seem to work much better.

Previous studies have shown that blind people are better than others at reaching out and touching the sources of sounds that are close by. Researchers from the University of Montreal wanted to see if blind people were also better at locating sounds that are far away.

Twenty-three blind people participated in the study. All had been sightless for at least 20 years. Fourteen of them had lost their vision before age 11. the rest went blind after age 16. The experiment also included 10 people who could see but were wearing blind-folds.

In one task, volunteers had to pick the direction of a sound coming from about 3 metres away. When the sound was in front of them or slightly off center in front, both groups performed equally well.

When sounds came from the side or the back, however, the blind group performed much better than the blindfolded group. The participants who had been blind since childhood did slightly better than those who lost their sight later.

Recognizing the locations of distant sounds can be a matter of life-or-death for blind people, say the researchers. Crossing the street, for instance, is much harder when you can?t see the cars coming.

Still, the researchers were surprised by how well the blind participants did, especially those who went blind after age 16. In another experiment, the scientists also found that parts of the brain that normally deal with visual information became active in locating sound in the people who were blind by age 11. These brain parts didn?t show sound-location activity in the other group of blind people or in the sighted people. The scientists now want to learn more about the working of brains of “late-onset” blind people.

67. The recent study shows blind people are better at telling ________________.

A. The sources of loud sounds.

B. the locations of distant sounds

C. the direction of sharp sounds

D. the distance of a sound in front of them

68. Which would be a proper title for the passage?

A. A Research on Blind People

B. Where is That Noise Coming from?

C. Hearing Better in the Dark

D. What If Living Without Your Eyes?

69. If people were asked to tell the direction of a sound from the side, who would perform best?

A. Those who are blind.

B. Those who have gone blind since children.

C. Those who went blind at age 16.

D. Those who are blindfolded.

70. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. Whether to be able to locate the sounds can be of vital importance for the blind.

B. All the volunteers in the experiment are sightless.

C. All the participants did equally well when picking sounds from whatever direction.

D. The later people become blind, the better they can perform in telling the direction of sounds.

第二卷

第四部分任务型阅读(共10题;每题1分,满分10分)

请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。注意:每空一词。

Do we need an “Ivy League”?

China may soon have its own “Ivy League”, with a union of top universities.

The term originally referred to an athletic conference of eight top universities in the northeastern US. The Chinese version, which was officially started in mid-October, consists of nine famous universities, including Peking, Tsinghua, Zhejiang and Fudan. The union is supposed to result in student exchange programs, recognition of academic achievements, and other joint programs.

The news of this Chinese “Ivy League” has received mixed responses from the public and press. Some negative critics have dismissed it as yet another example of the wishful copying of international practices without fully understanding them. Others say that the “Ivy League” is not necessary but that the union is a good idea, one that could promote academic development.

So what?s your opinion on a Chinese “Ivy League”? Do we need one?

Yes. Ivy League or not, nine of China?s best universities cooperating is a good thing.

These universities combining resources could create a better environment for students and for research. It could also save a lot of time and resources because it would mean fewer unnecessary investments for some of the universities.

Allowing students to move to or have exchanges with other universities could broaden their horizons, improve their social skills and create more employment opportunities. The results could be more important than lessons and achievements.

The term “Ivy League” carries a sense of academic excellence, tradition and reputation. If borrowing such a term could encourage s tudents? and professors? mental state and improve Chinese higher education, then there?s no reason not to do it.

No. Universities should do some work on increasing cooperation instead of copying an “Ivy League” model.

Many Chinese universities already have such cooperation with each other. If this cooperation were associated with the “Ivy League”, it would just distract (分散) attention and resources and have a negative effect.

These Chinese universities are all state-run and most get their funding from the g overnment. They?re quite similar to each other in many ways and more cooperation wouldn?t bring about as much potential ability as between , say, public and private, or Chinese and foreign universities.

China should find its own way to develop world-class universities instead of by copying some foreign practices. We have our own unique conditions and foreign lessons often don?t apply well here.

作文

Good afternoon, everyone!

The topic of my speech today is “Cooperate with others”.

In this busy, modern world, if we want to complete our work effectively and efficiently, we must all learn to cooperate with others. If we lose our partner, then we will fail. Cooperation can save us a lot of time and energy. Additionally, we can learn much from our partners by cooperating them.

When we cooperate with someone we like, we will feel very happy. And we can share our pleasure and sadness with him. But it can be difficult to be cooperative with someone we dislike. In such a situation, we may focus on our work, instead of our partner. Perhaps in working together with him for a long time, we?ll learn that he is a man to get along well with. Even if this doesn?t happen, it?s still worth a try.

How can we become a good partner? In my opinion, (we should try to listen to others? opinions. If he makes mistakes, we also try to point them out. Thirdly, we mustn?t beat others to make them in unfavorable position)

Thank you for your listening!
