Can you hear me now? (P3)

MY teachers suggested that I see a speech specialist (专家) in school.

I never really gave much thought to my speech. If other people understood what I was saying, then that w as good enough. I didn’t mind repeating (重复) myself many times.

Before testing me, the speech specialist asked me what I thought of having good speech. I told her I thought it was not important.

―Well, when you are in an interview for a job, and they don’t know what you are saying, what are they going to say to you? Nice meeting you, bye,‖ she said.

Maybe good speech was important. I took part in 20-minute classes each week with the specialist.

After she tested me, she told me that I spoke too f ast, and didn’t give enough eye contact (眼神交流). I learned that when I made eye contact with someone, it meant that I was talking to that person, and I could also see what he or she thought about what I was saying.

When my first speech class started, I found that I had been speaking too fast to be understood. Every time I spoke too fast, the specialist stopped me and told me to start again. At first, I got stopped after almost every other sentence. After a while, I felt my speech slow down. I wasn’t su re if people could understand me better, but my friends stopped asking me to repeat myself.

Speech is an important skill to have. If you do have good speech, that’s a good thing, but if you don’t have it, it is never too late to improve.

The words that make the world turn

ANIMALS communicate with noises and movements. Humans communicate with language, especially our mother language.

February 21 is International Mother Language Day, which was named by the United Nations (联合国) in 1999. According to the Linguistic (语言学的) Society of America, there are now 6,909 known languages around the world. In China, most people speak Chinese as their mother language.

More people speak Chinese than any other language in the world. About one fifth of the world’s population speaks a form of Chinese, the BBC reported.

The earliest known written record of Chinese is the oracle bone script (甲骨文) of the Shang Dynasty (17th century BC – 11th century BC). These are animal bones, mostly tortoise shells (龟壳), with writing on them. Most Chinese characters are ideograms (表意文字) which combine two or more words together to make a new one, for example, jia (家) means ―a pig under the roof‖. This shows that people in ancient times thought of home as a place to hold treasures (财富).

As time goes on, although hundreds of thousands of words have been developed, only a few thousand of them are used in people’s everyday life. Some common new words can be found in the latest Xinhua Zidian, such as dishi (的士) for taxis, xiu (秀) for TV shows and fangnu (房奴) meaning ―slave to one’s home‖.

With China’s fast economic development, people from other countries are becoming interested in Chinese. In a survey in the US last December, when 2,007 people were asked: ―Which new foreign language would you learn?‖ Chinese placed second, after Spanish, with 15 percent of responses.

Confucius Institutes (孔子学院) around the world are more popular than ever. More than 300 colleges in over 90 countries have Confucius Institutes, USA T oday reported.

Choose the best answer:

1. If the world population is 7 billion, how many people speak Chinese?

A. 2 billion

B. 3.5 billion

C. 1.4 billion

D. 1.75 billion

2. We can tell from paragraph 4 that the earliest Chinese characters were written on _____.

A. leaves

B. Paper

C. human bones

D. turtle shells

3. Paragraph 6 mainly tells us that _____.

A. China has developed quickly

B. Chinese is becoming more and more popular

C. people prefer to do surveys in Chinese

D. lots of Chinese words have died out

4. What does the article mainly talk about?

A. Characteristics of Chinese.

B. A general introduction to Chinese.

This man is really heartless

THE heart is one of the most important parts of all animals, including humans. It produces and moves blood (血液) inside the animal’s body. However, Craig Le wis, a 55-year-old American man, has just become the first man in the world living without a heart in his chest.

In March of last year, Lewis was dying from a heart disease and there seemed to be no way to save his life. But then doctors Billy Cohn and Bud Frazier of the T exas Heart Institute succeeded in replacing his heart with a pump (泵). The device (装置) is like a human heart and moves a continuous flow of blood through the body, using blades (机器的叶片) to move it along.

Doctors put the device in af ter removing Lewis’ heart. Within a day, the patient was up and able to speak.―I listened,‖ said Linda, Lewis’ wife. ―It was a hum (嗡嗡声), which was amazing.‖ She said she knew the operation was risky. ―He wanted to live, and we didn’t want to lose him.‖ As long as the device works, Lewis will stay alive without a heartbeat or pulse (脉搏).

The two doctors had developed the device some time before and tested their invention on a cow named Abigail. ―Y ou couldn’t hear a heartbeat from Abigail’s chest and sh e had no pulse, but she was happy and in good health,‖ Dr Cohn said.

Then the pair went on doing experiments on nearly 50 cows. The day after the operations, the animals were doing everything they were the day before – eating, sleeping and moving. The only difference was that this time, there wasn’t a heart pumping blood through their bodies.

Choose the best answer:

1. It can be learned from paragraph 1 that ______.

A. the heart is more important to humans than to other animals

B. the heart is the most important part in the human body

C. Lewis is the world’s first man living without a heart

D. the heart is a place for animals to think about things

2. The underlined word ―it‖ in paragraph 2 means ______.

A. a heart disease

B. the device

C. a human heart

D. blood

3. Put the following events in the right order: ______.

①The two doctors did experiments on nearly 50 cows.

② Lewis received the operation.

③The device was developed.

④Abigail was tested.

A. ①②③④

B.④①③②

C. ③④①②

D.③①④②

4. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?

A. Lewis is living without a heartbeat or pulse.

B. Lewis couldn’t speak for two days after the operation.

C. Abigail became weak after the operation.

D. The device can work better than a heart does.

A place in my sister’s heart

I HAD to make a decision. While cleaning the house, I found my 13-year-old sister’s diary .

I picked the book up from the floor and opened it, searching for my name. I thought that I would find something bad. As I read, the blood ran from my face. It was worse than I thought. I sat down on the floor. There was nothing bad there at all. There was a short description of herself, her goals and her dreams, and of the person who had encouraged her most. I started to cry.

I was her hero. She admired me for my personality, my achievements and, strangely, my honesty (诚实). She wanted to be like me. She had been watching me for years. I stopped reading. I felt ashamed (难为情的) of myself. I had put so much energy into pushing her away that I had missed out on being her friend.

I wasted years hating someone—and now I had violated (违背) her trust. It was I who had lost something beautiful, and it was I who would never allow myself to do such a thing again.

Reading the words my sister wrote warmed my heart, and I wanted to know her again. I was finally able to put away the silly things that kept me from her. That afternoon, I decided to go to her — this time to experience, but not to judge, to welcome, b ut not to fight. After all, she was my sister.

Choose the best answer:

1. In paragraph 1, the writer’s blood ran from her face because ______.

A. the writer became angry with her sister’s diary

B. the writer felt ashamed of herself

C. the writer was afraid of being found reading her sister’s diary

D. her sister thought of her as a bad person

2. What was NOT in the diary?

A. A short description of the girl.

B. The girl’s goals and dreams.

C. A mention of her hero who encouraged her.

D. Something bad about the writer.

3. The writer wouldn’t _____ again after reading the diary.

A. fight with her sister

B. talk with her sister

C. welcome her sister

D. like her sister

4. Through the story, the writer wants to tell us that _____.

A. re ading others’ diaries is bad behavior

B. reading others’ words can warm one’s heart

C. we should trust others and be friendly to them

D. we should forgive others when they make mistakes

Many people go to school for an education. They learn languages, history, geography, physics, chemistry and math. Others go to school to learn a skill _1_ they can make a living. School education is very important and useful, but no one can learn _2_ from school. A teacher, no matter how much he _3_, can’t teach his st udents everything they want to know. The teacher’s job is to show his students how to read and _4_ to think. So much more is to be learned out of school _5_ the students themselves.

It is always more important to know how to study by oneself than to me morize some _6_ or formulas (公式). It is actually quite _7_ to learn a certain fact in history or a formula in mathematics. But it is very difficult to use a formula in _8_ a math problem. Great scientists, such as Einstein, Newton and Galileo, didn’t learn many things from school, but they were all _9_ and invented many things for mankind.

The _10_ for their success is that they knew how to study. They read books that were not _11_ at school. They worked hard all their lives, _12_ not a single moment. They would ask many questions as they read and they did thousands of experiments.
