Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage.

W edding ceremonies in the United States as much as the people do. But many weddings, no matter where or how they are performed, include certain traditional customs. For instance, the bride and groom often exchange rings at the ceremony. The rings are usually worn on the fourth finger of the left hand, and are exchanged in the middle of the ceremony. Today, the rings show the couple’s love for one another.

After the ceremony, the couple is often showered with handfuls of uncooked rice by friends and family. Rice, as we know, shows productivity and harvest. And the, there is often a party, where the food is so plentiful that it almost takes the attention away from the people. Soon the bride stands in the center of the room, often on a chair, and throws her flowers to the unmarried women at the party. Tradition says that whoever catches the flowers will be the next bride. Some women eagerly try to catch the flowers; others shy away.

And then it is time for the bride and groom to set off the tradition of a honeymoon, a trip after the wedding. The trip nowadays varies greatly be wealth, time and preference. Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage.

For twenty years I have run, biked, or done other sports at least three times a week. I do so not because someone forces me, and surely not because it feels good -- it seldom does -- but rather because of what it allows me to enjoy. I can climb mountains and ski without gasping for breath. That is the reward for physical training.

I have run a number of moderate-length races, but only one marathon. It took me so long -- three and a half hours, compared to forty minutes for a ten-kilometer race that I struggled with mental focus. In the shorter races, I always managed to stay aware of how I was doing, how much distance remained, how I measured up to my desired time. In the marathon, I felt like I was wearing blinders, unable to concentrate on the race as a whole. I kept thinking about the pain in my left big toe or the quivering muscle on my right calf. Running on a cold, rainy day in Chicago, I could feel blisters developing on my feet from the friction of wet socks. "Keep moving," I told myself. It will end sometime; the only way to get to the finish line is to keep going.

A friend had agreed to meet me at the ten-mile mark, and when he failed to appear, I sank into a depression that lasted five miles. I forced myself to look at the runners around me, to notice the Chicago neighborhoods, to listen to the bands posted along the route, and as I did so once again I lost track of the race and my place in it. As I passed the seventeen-mile mark, a roar went up from the crowd who had just heard on the radio that the first runners had crossed the finish line. I had nine miles to run.

At the twenty-mile mark I was tempted to slow to a walk. Then my friend finally appeared, and for the first time I had someone to talk to. Chicago had closed off so many streets that he couldn't make the ten-mile rendezvous, he explained as he ran beside me. In an unforgettable act of friendship, my friend, sensing my weakness, ran alongside me in street clothes the remaining six miles, offering me encouragement.

6. The author goes into physical training regularly because __D_______.

A. he wants to be fit enough to climb and ski easily

B. he is forced to do so

C. he gets advantage over others through physical training

D. he gets great pleasure from it

7. The author's friend did not appear as promised because ___B_______.

A. he lost his way

B. many streets in the city were not open at that time

C. his friend only wanted to run with the author the remaining six miles

D. his friend couldn't find sportswear for the race

8. Which of the following words may substitute the word "rendezvous" (Line 6, Paragraph 4)?C

A. mark

B. agreement

C. appointment

D. greeting

9. In the marathon, ____D__________.

A. the author wore blinders

B. the author managed to concentrate on what he was doing

C. the author received the reward of his physical training

D. the author had difficulty with mental focus

10. When the author passed the seventeen-mile mark, ____C___________.

A. he was listening to the radio

B. the crowd roared to cheer him up

C. the first runners had finished their race

D. he had lost track of the race

Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage.

Americans generally consider themselves to be frank, open, and direct in their dealings with other people. In their daily conversation, they may chat with each other in a more direct way. “Let’s lay our cards on the table,” they say. Or, “Let’s stop playing games and get to the point.” Unlike statements from other nations, these and many other phrases show the Americans’ idea that people should clearly state what they think and what they want.

Americans tend to believe that disagreements are best settled by means of long discussions among the people involved. If I dislike something you are doing, I should tell you about it directly so you will know, clearly and from me personally, how I feel about it. They do not prefer to hide their feelings, which may make themselves uneasy. For them, bringing in other people to solve the problem is regarded as somewhat strange. And the former will be looked upon as one who is not brave enough to speak directly to someone else.

Americans will often speak openly and directly to others about things they dislike. They will try to do so in a manner they c all “constructive,” that is, a manner which the other person will not find offensive or unacceptable. If they do not speak openly about what is in their minds, they will often express their meanings in nonverbal ways (without words, but through facial expressions, body positions, and gestures). They believe it is also a good way to show their feelings.

Americans are not taught, as people in many Asian countries are, that they should mask their feelings. Their words, the tone of their voices, or their facial expressions will usually reveal when they are feeling angry, unhappy, confused, or happy and satisfied.

Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage.

In 1978, my wife and I attended the Star Trek conference in Colorado. While in the man’s room at one point during the confere nce, I was somewhat surprised when George Takei entered. I knew he wasn’t coming in to use the lavatory facilities, since he had them in his hotel room. I quickly figured out that he was “passing through” the restroom on his way to the men’s exercise room, located next doo r.

I casually said, what’s up, George?”

He smiled and replied, “Two hours of exercise, every day! You never know when I’ll be called upon for a part that requires strenuous physical activity.” Those of us in the men’s room asked if we could follow him into the exercise room to watch him work out, and he said, “Sure! Then I’ll have someone to talk to!” We trailed him into the room and observed him going through his paces.

While he was doing exercises on the various machines, I pulled out a pack of my cigaret tes and politely asked, “Do you mind if I smoke?”

Mr. Takei stopped his exercises, stared at me for a second and said, “Yes, as a matter of fact, I do.” I put my pack of cigar ettes away.

For the next two hours, George Takei appeared to speak only to me, asking me questions about my smoking and explaining that he hated smoking not because smoking was forbidden. It was due to the fact that by the 23rd Century, humans will have learned that smoking accomplishes no good and serves no needs.

The words weighed heavily on my mind. For months afterward, I replayed our conversation in my mind and finally came to my senses. Later that year, I began a three-year effort to quit smoking, which was ultimately successful.

Three years later, I again saw Mr. Takei at the Sta r Trek conference in Houston, and was flattered that even though he didn’t remember my name, he did remember our conversation. I happily informed him that I had just completed my second year without cigarettes. He hugged me and congratulated me in front of a roomful of onlookers.

George Takei did what no one else probably could do: He got me to quit smoking, and I’ve been free of the habit for almost 21 years. I was just one of his millions of fans, but he cared enough about just one person to go out of his way to try to save a life---my life---and he did.

16. Which of the following is NOT true?D

A. When the author saw Mr. Takei again, he had already quit smoking.

He was acknowledging one of our most distinctive characteristics:the fact that we are social animals whose behavior and personalities are shaped by the groups to which we belong. Throughout life, most of our daily activities are performed in the company of others. Whether our purpose is working, playing, raising a family, learning,or simply relaxing,we usually pursue it in groups, even if the group is as small as two or three people. Out need for human contacts is not merely a practical one;it is a deep psychological need as well. If people are deprived of the company of others for prolonged periods, mental breakdown is the usual result. Even the Geneva Convention(日内瓦公约),an international agreement that regulates the treatment of prisoners of war, recognizes this need. It regards solitary (孤独的)imprisonment for more than thirty day as a cruel form of torture(折磨)。 In its strictest sense, a group is a collection of people interacting together in an orderly way on the basis of shared expe ctations about one another‘s behavior. As result of this interaction, members feel a common sense of“belonging.”They distinguish members from nonmembers and expect certain kinds of behavior from outsiders. 21.By“No man is an island,”John Donne means _____. A.no one can live on an island alone B.a man is not surrounded by sea on all sides C.a man and an island are irrelevan D.no one can live in isolation from other people 22.The fact that we work or even play in groups illustrates the point that ____. A.poeple are different from animals B.Donne recognized the group to which he belonged C.human beings are social animals D.human behavior and personalities are formed by others 23.“Breakdown”as used in Line 6,Paragraph 2 most probably denotes ____. A.separation B.collapse C.analysis D.function 24.According to the passage, what is NOT a characteristic of group? A.There are at least two people in it. B.The members share some common grounds. C.The members work for one purpose. D.The members interact regularly with each other. 25.This passage is mainly about _______. A.the importance of human contacts B.pattens of human behavior C.the importance of human activities D.patterns of human society Passage Two Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.
