The Amazon basin, in South America& is covered by the world’s largest rain forest,

where millions of insects, plants, and animal species (物种) live. There, the jaguar

(美洲豹), a symbol of strength and power, is king.

John Polisar, a wild animal expert, says jaguars live in fewer places than ever.

At one time, jaguars spread throughout the southwestern USA, Mexico, and Central and

South Ame rica. They’ve been almost wiped out from at least half of their original

geographic range. Today, jaguars can be found mainly in Mexico and Central and South

America. In recent years, only three have been photographed in the wild in Arizona,

USA.

Here, some of the barriers along the Mexican border prevent jaguars from walking

freely. Michael Robinson works for the Center for Biological Diversity. The non-profit

group works to protect species and habitats (栖息地). Robinson believes plans to

extend man-made barriers would hurt jaguars.

The animals were once heavily hunted for their beautiful fur. Before 1973, as

many as 18,000 jaguars were killed each year. Efforts to make trading the fur illegal helped recover jaguar numbers. But now there is a new concern. Jaguars are being hunted for their teeth and bones, which are used in Asian medicines and to make jewelry. Habitat loss is also a major threat to them.

As humans develop reserves, meeting with jaguars is more frequent. People hunt jaguars’ prey (猎物). With less prey, jaguars attack cattle. Some farmers kill jaguars to protect their cattle.

Conservationists say the jaguar can be saved. Robinson encourages kids to write to government leaders about the importance of the Endangered Species Act. “Jaguars are beautiful, intelligent animals that play a key role in the natural balance of ecosystems,” he says. According to Polisar, the best way to protect jaguars i s to keep the wild wild. “The jaguar,” he says, “is the symbol of exactly that.”

A. The wild should be kept wild to protect jaguars.

B. The Endangered Species Act should be reformed.

C. Jaguars help keep the balance of natural ecosystems.

D. More man-made barriers should be built to save jaguars.

You may have heard a lot about “genetically-modified (GM) food” in news reports. But what are they? And most importantly, are they safe or not?

These questions have been back in the spotlight since mid-October. It was revealed then that 61 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering wrote a joint letter to the country’s top leaders in July. They urged

the government to push forward the commercial development of GM rice, according to Beijing-based The Mirror.

“Western companies have made great advances in GM food and have significant market shares in the industry. If China doesn’t catch up soon, there is no future for the Chinese agriculture industry,” Huang Dafang, a researcher at Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, told the newspaper.

However & days later on Oct 25, the city of Zhangye, in Gansu province, banned the growth, sale and use of GM seeds, making it the first city in China to issue (颁发) such a ban, Xinhua reported. The city has long promoted itself as “Golden Zhangye” for its production of corn seeds and organic products. Ac cording to the local government, the move is meant to protect the safety of agricultural products.

The safety of GM food is a controversial issue worldwide. Although some studies suggest that it is safe for humans, its long-term health effects are not yet known.

Many countries have certain regulations for producing and selling GM food. For example, in European Union(EU) countries, each GM food must be approved before it can be used. This process can take up to 17 months. It is also required that the origin of all GM food be tracked, and that all food with GM content of more than 0. 9 percent be labeled (贴标签), according to EU website Europa.

China also has strict rules for GM food. The Ministry of Agriculture issues bio-safety certificates for GM crops it considers safe. The crops with the certificates are some GM types of cotton, rice, corn and papaya (木瓜), said Xie Jiajian, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, in an interview with People’s Daily on Sept. 16.

China has also issued import certificates for GM soybeans, corn, rape, cotton and beets (甜菜), allowing them to be imported for domestic processing. But they also need bio-safety certificates before going on the market.

“In China, more than half of cooking oil consumed is soybean oil, and 90 percent of that oil is made from GM soybeans,” Wang Xiaoyu, vice secretar y general of the Soybean Association of Heilongjiang province? told Xinhua.

In order to ensure people’s ability to know what they are eating, China also

has a trademark system for GM products, including clear labels, but many GM products in the country are still sold without labels, Xinhua noted.

Give a man a fish, they say, and he will eat for a day; teach him to fish, and he’ll eat for a lifetime. A few fish dinners recently at local restaurants have reminded me of several times when someone has, in fact, given me a fish. In the last months of 1991, I was in Ukraine. The group I went with spent most of the months at teachers colleges in several cities. While we did some sightseeing, our main purpose was to meet with the students so they could practise their English.

As the sightseeing was led by my tour guide with whom I often disagreed, I on several occasions turned left when the rest of the group turned right, and set off on my own. One weekend in Kherson, a port city, I boarded the wrong ferry on the Dneiper River, going to somewhere I never knew. On the ferry I was recognized by two young

women, who were the students at the college I was visiting. One of them was going to visit her parents at their “summerhouse”, a vegetable garden on a small island farther up the Dneiper. When the young lady understood that I had no destination in mind, she invited me along.

It was the sort of visit with a family one hopes for, and rarely gets, in a foreign country. The father was an amateur photographer, and since the fastest film he could get locally was ASA 64, he was thrilled that I could leave him a few rolls of ASA 400 color film. The mother prided herself on her cooking, but had limited supplies, so they walked around the island and invited several other families to a potluck supper (家常便饭). The main course was sturgeon (鲟), which was at least six feet long in the river. It was a gift of a fish that must have fed a few families for several days.

In 1988, my wife and I were teaching in the Faroe Islands. On our first trip to the grocery store, we found no fish for sale. A teaching colleague explained that in an economy where almost every family is supported by fishing, there is no market for fresh fish: You catch your own or get one from a next-door neighbor. A few days later, he brought us a few large fish to keep us well supplied.

In 1965, I was studying German in Munich, Germany. Standing in line for the student tickets for an opera, I met a young American man who had been sent to Munich for business. As an American who first came to this city, he had not been able to find the local branch of his company, and I was able to give him directions. When he left Munich, having had some meals with people from the local branch, he gave me the food he’d been carrying, a can of gefilte fish, a sort of seasoned fish ball. I was feeling homesick, and this old favorite really hit the spot.

A gift of canned gefilte fish seemed an improbable favor to return. But nearly

50 years later, I had a cousin who was working in Nairobi, Kenya. He wanted to organize an American-style Passover Seder (逾越节晚餐) for his friends, but could not find American-style gefilte fish in Kenya. While it usually comes in bottles, I was able to locate some packed in cans, and I mailed a box of canned gefilte fish to him from America.

My parents always told me that, when I was young, many people would do favors

for me that I could not repay, but if I watched carefully, they added, I might pass the favor along to another someday.

Give a man a fish, and he may find a way to give a fish to someone else, even 50 years later.

I once had a superior, Natalie, who was repeatedly late. She would race into the office every morning, stressed and very untidy, and she’d always have to reschedule meetings. I almost had a panic attack once when she arrived just 17 seconds before our flight closed for boarding on an important business trip.

I’ve known a few people like Natalie, and I always think: How do they do it?

I mean, isn’t it so anx iety-inducing to always race against the clock? If they take

a few minutes for preparation and think ahead, everything will be much easier. Natalie’s approach didn’t do her any favor, that’s for sure. Her lack of organization meant she never got selected f or leadership roles, and she wasn’t considered for the promotion she wanted. It wasn’t surprising.

The good news is that punctuality is not a gene. Anyone can master it! Here’s how you can stay on (or ahead of) schedule 99% of the time!

Refuse to take on too much

Overscheduled people run the risk of being late because they squeeze more into their calendar than a 24-hour slot (时段) will allow. Hey, you can’t fit seven eggs into a half-dozen box without a mess. This one simple rule will transform your life.

What can you scratch off the agenda before you even begin today? Get real with yourself here. What can you say “no” to in order to give your best to the stuff that really matters?

Set aside a few minutes to plan

Look at your day the night before or first thing in the morning, where do you have to be and by when? What do you have to do, and how long will each task take you? All you have to do is a bit of time budgeting!

Say you have three tasks to complete, and two meetings that both require a little

preparation and travel time. Schedule an approximate time for each of three tasks, and give yourself some extra time in case you need a little longer than you think.

Have some necessities handy

Without dry shampoo, an accessory (配饰) collection that matches a basic black garment and a bright lipstick in handbag, getting ready would take me at least 30 minutes more per day. When you have some such time-saving stuff in your life, your appearance remains strong in a very short period of time.

Start batching (批量处理)

Whether you’re planning Facebook updates, sending emails or even make-ahead (可预先准备的) meals for the week, batching is a time-saver. Once you’re in a shopping, writing or social media mindset, perfect that by thinking a few days or a week out.

A working mom shared with me the secret of batching meals, chores and even paying bills online. Try it—you won’t go back.

One possible version:

An increasing number of people are setting up their individual official Wechat accounts with the aim of expressing themselves and gaining popularity. So far, only a minority of them have succe ssfully built popular “self- media” brands.

From my point of view, it is a good idea to set up an individual official account on Wechat. Firstly, it is an excellent tool for self-promotion. It’s a way to make yourself known widely as well as to sell your ideas to others, by which you can increase your personal impact. Secondly, it is a good chance for you to make friends with many like-minded people with whom you can share the same opinions? ideas or interests. Last but not least, an individual official account can be regarded as a personal journal It is not only a record of your views, feelings and meaningful events in your life; it is also a witness to your personal growth.
