Thomas Gunn had spent a year in an army training camp. It had been a long and hard period of training. Each day was th e same. He had to get up at four o’clock in the morning and wash himself in a cold river. Then he had to run twenty kilometers before breakfast. For the rest of the morning he learned to kill with his bare hands and with various kinds of weapons. In the afternoon he had to carry a heavy backpack over high mountains, through dense forests and deep rivers. After a year he was very fit and healthy. He was also strong and confident. Thomas had decided that the army would be his life.

Today was graduation day. He felt extremely proud in his new uniform. He was standing in the parade ground with about five hundred other soldiers. The families of the soldiers had come to watch them graduate and they were very proud of their sons and daughters. Among them were Thomas’ parents, brothers and his fiancé.

In the middle of the parade ground, General Brady, their commanding officer, was standing on a platform. He was giving a speech to the new soldiers. He had started an hour earlier and he showed no signs of stopping. Many of the soldiers were bored and impatient. They wanted to eat, drink and celebrate with their families. So was Thomas.

Thomas turned to an elderly, well-dressed woman who was standing next to him and said, “What a fat, boring old fool the General is.I wish he’d dry up.”

On hearing this, the lady looked stunned first. Then she said indignantly, “Young man, do you know who I am?”

“I’m afraid I don’t.” replied Thomas timidly.

“I am the General’s wife.”

Thomas went white with fear but the army had taught him to think quickly. He pushed out his chest and said to the General’s wife,“And do you know who I am, Madam?”

“No”, she replied angrily.

Tomas turned and took off at once. As he disappeared into the crowd, he shouted, “Thank God!”

Professor Scott was a world expert in Biology. He taught at the old university of St Andrews in Scotland and he was one of the most well-known and respected scientists in the world. He had written many books on Biology and he had given lectures all over the world.

Professor Scott was 86 but he still continued to teach. However he was beginning to lose his memory and had become forgetful. He often misplaced things and spent a lot of time trying to find them again. Also the professor’s eyes weren’t as good as they used to be. He had to wear very thick glasses. On some days the professor would spend two or three hours trying to find the keys to his house.

At the beginning of a new university year a group of eager students waited in the lecture theatre to listen to the famous man. This was their first lesson in Biology. The professor entered the room. He was wearing a long white laboratory coat and he was carrying a small package under his arm. The package was covered with brown paper. Professor Scott looked round the lecture theatre, smiling broadly at the students. Then, in a warm voice, he said, “Welcome. Today is our first lesson in Biology. For this lesson I have brought a frog with me. I caught it in the pond this morning. We can learn a lot about Biology from a small creature like the frog. First of all we will examine its appearance, its shape, color and texture. Then we will dissect it and look at its muscles and organs.”

The students listened and watched with excitement. The professor took the package from under his arm and put it on the table. He then removed the paper. He looked at the contents of the package, open-mouthed. There wasn’t a frog inside. Instead there was a large che ese and tomato sandwich. Professor Scott looked at the sandwich. Then he shook his head and said quietly, “That’s strange. I’m sure I ate my lunch an hour ago.”

二、听力口语自动化考试如何组织 根据省教育厅统一部署,2009年起,全省中考英语听力口语自动化考试由省教育厅统一组织,统一命制试题、统一考点设置、统一考试时间、统一考试流程、统一评分标准、统一发布成绩。 三、听力口语自动化考试考点和考场如何设置 人机对话考试对考点的要求比较高。省教育厅要求原则上以各初中学校为考点,以各学校的计算机网络机房为考场,考场计算机及相关软硬件配置均须符合考试所要求的基本条件,不符合要求的必须在升级、补充到位的基础上才能申报考点。从目前申报情况看,我市大多数初中学校已符合考场设置条件,全市大多数初中毕业生都可在本校参加听力口语自动化考试。少数不符合考场设置条件学校的学生由各地教育行政部门统一安排到就近的考点参加考试。 四、一个考场内同时有30人进行听力口语考试,会不会互相干扰 按照考场设置要求,一个考场内设置不少于33台考试机和1台监考机,每个考场同时安排30人进行考试。考试所用耳麦和话筒都是特制的,考生只能听到考试机播放的声音,话筒也只对定向的声音录音,完全不影响考试效果。

滨州学院第四届大学生科技文化艺术节 大学生英语口语大赛活动方案 为全面贯彻落实《中共中央、国务院关于进一步加强和改进大学生思想政治教育的意见》精神和科学发展观要求,庆祝“五四”运动92周年,丰富高校校园文化生活,促进广大青年学生健康成长,特举办滨州学院第四届大学生科技文化艺术节大学生英语口语大赛,方案如下: 一、主办单位:共青团滨州学院委员会 二、承办单位:外语系团总支 三、参赛范围:滨州学院全日制在校学生 四、比赛安排: (一)初赛、复赛阶段:2011年4月12日-4月27日 各系(院)自主进行初赛、复赛,每系(院)选拔1名选手参加决赛赛。 (二)决赛阶段:2011年5月17日晚7点 地点:五百人报告厅 决赛内容包括实用朗读、现场描述和英语情景交流三个环节。 1、实用朗读:参赛者抽取一篇应用性文字(100-150个英语词),准备3分钟后进行朗读。要求语音语调正确,表情恰当。文字内容包括:欢迎词、会议主持人讲话、节目主持人讲话、导游词(日程安排、景点介绍等)、答谢词、告别讲话、欢送词等。 2、现场描述:参赛者抽取一幅表现某一情景的画图、图表、广告等,根据给出的说明或图示(如进出口份额、市场变化、人口变动、生产状况、生产指标、景点介绍等)进行口头陈述,时间为3分钟。 3、英语情景交流:参赛者赛前选择场景,自行寻找好搭档,进行情景交流,拍成DV,决赛中播放该交流场景,评委根据设计,表达的准确性等给分。场景可源自校园内的餐厅、寝室、图书馆、课堂、超市、校园小径等,时间为3分钟。
