Death Valley is one of the most famous deserts in the United States, covering a wide area with its alkali sand. Almost 20 percent of this area is well below sea level, and Badwater, a salt water pool, is about 280 feet below sea level and the lowest point in the United States.

Long ago the Panamint Indians called this place "Tomesha" —the land of fire.Death Valley's present name dates back to 1849, when a group of miners coming across from Nevada became lost in its unpleasantness and hugeness and their adventure turned out to be a sad story. Today Death Valley has been declared a National Monument (纪念碑) and is crossed by several well-marked roads where good services can be found easily.Luckily the change created by human settlement has hardly ruined the special beauty of this place.

Here nature created a lot of surprising, almost like the sights on the moon, ever-changing as the frequent wind moves the sand about, showing the most unusual colors. One of the most astonishing and variable parts of Death Valley is the Devil' s Golf Course, where it seems hard for one to tell reality from terrible dreams. In 2000, at the age of 56, Jeff was going to take a difficult and dangerous journey (旅程) in the Arctic (北冰洋). He was planning to walk to the North Pole all by himself, pulling his food, tent and other things behind him in two sledges (雪橇). Because the Arctic is covered with ice and water, he would sometimes have to sit on his sledges and use them like a boat!

Before he started his journey, Jeff spent 2 years practicing running and took part in many boat races. He had also traveled in the Arctic for 28 years. All of these were good for him. But trouble still happened.

六、阅读与表达

Everybody has to buy or sell things sometimes. Even students, who are usually not very rich, have to learn something about making purchases (购买) cleverly. As a student you may find, for

example, that you need to buy a typewriter or winter clothing. You may want to buy a television or a used car. Of course, you want to get good value for your money. If you are thinking about a purchase, you should remember two important things.

1.Study first, and then decide what you want to buy. You can learn a lot just by reading books and advertisements.

Remember that a high quality (质量) product will probably last longer and work better. Of course, for a best product you can expect to pay more. A poorest product may not give you the same quality, but the price should be low.Perhaps this seems clear, but you must know the quality. Don't just look at the price. A poor quality product could be expensive. And a valuable one could be on sale at a greatly reduced (减少) price.

2.Don't hurry.Fake your time. After you decide what product you want, go to many different stores. If you cannot find the product you want, you may try to order it directly from the factory. Or ask the store to order it for you.

Look for a good deal. If you wait, you will probably find that your product will go on sale and you may be able to save 10% , 20% , or even 50% off the original price.

Finally, before you buy, make sure that the product is guaranteed (保证). If you don't like it, you want to be able to get your money back.

If you carefully examine your favorites and then shop until you find the lowest possible price, you will both be happy with your purchase and also keep more money in the bank.

1.What are the things that students might buy?

____________________________________________________________________________ 2.Where can you get information about products?

____________________________________________________________________________ 3.Which is more important, quality or price?

____________________________________________________________________________ 4.Why is it dangerous to judge a product by its price alone?

Dear Betty,

It seems that some of my classmates are so lucky that they have enough money to buy the fashionable clothes and shoes. I really want to be as attractive as them. But my parents are both workers and they don't have enough money to buy expensive clothes for me. Luckily, they give me more than hundred yuan for breakfast every month, so I plan to save all the money for the famous bands. Don't you think it is a good idea?

A.But in Italy,a nation that takes fashion seriously, the suggestion caused a debate(辩论)among parents, teachers and students. The issue(论点)is whether the headmaster's request will limit students' freedom or whether dress in Italian schools is too casual(随意的).

B."We don't want to kick fashion out," the headmaster explained, "but extremes(极端)of fashion like this are not right in school." Many other schools have now requested that their students also stop wearing such trousers.

C.Have you ever seen any students whose trousers hang so low that you can see their underwear? What do you think of that? Fashionable? Some of today's teenagers are big fans of such a look. But recently this trend has been at the center of an argument in Italian middle schools.

D.A parents' group praised the move in favor of good taste, while others advised schools to stop worrying about fashion.

E.Another 14-year-old girl said she would probably respect the request, simply for practical (实际的) reasons. "I don't really feel comfortable in those sort of jeans," said Sarah, "In winter, when dressed like that, it's quite cold and I am afraid my stomach will ache."

F.Many students have simply ignored (忽略) the request. Gaudio, 14, wore extremely low trousers exposing orange underwear in class. It was cold, so she wore a matching orange scarf.

G.The headmaster of a school in central Italy has asked the students to stop wearing low-rise jeans that expose underwear and parts of the body. His request came after a class trip, when he saw a boy's baggy trousers slide (滑) to his feet. He pointed out that this way of dressing is not suitable for school.

Dear Mary,

It's nice to hear from you. I understand your feeling. It's true that some of your classmates are lucky. But you may have something that they want to have, such as high marks and good grades. So you'd better stop thinking about what you don't have and give up your plan to save money for expensive clothes. Just enjoy what you have got!

As we all know, breakfast is important for our health and study. So you should eat it regularly. Why not keep the dream of fashionable things in your mind and try to work hard until you can afford them yourself? But remember, nice clothes don't mean everything.

There are more meaningful things to do in our life.

I hope you can understand how to make good use of your money and live a happy live.

Best wishes!

Yours,

Betty
