Passage B

Except for the sun, the moon looks the biggest object in the sky. Actually it is one of the smallest and only looks big because it is so near to us. Its diameter is only 2160 miles (3389 km), or a little more than a quarter of the diameter of the earth.

Once a month, or, more exactly, once e very 29.5 days, at the time we call “full moon”, its whole disc looks bright. At other times only part of it appears bright, and we always find that this is the part which faces towards the sun, while the part facing away from the sun appears dark. People could make their pictures better if they kept this in mind — only those parts of the moon which are lighted up by the sun are brighter. This shows that the moon gives no light of its own. It only throws back the light of the sun, like a huge mirror hung in the sky.

Yet the dark part of the moon’s surface is not completely black; usually it is just light enough for us to be able to see its shape, so that we speak of seeing “the old moon in the new moon’s arms”. The light by which we see the old moon does not come from the sun, but from the earth. We know well how the surface of the sea or of snow, or even of a wet road, may throw back uncomfortably much of the sun’s light on to our faces. In the same way the surface of the whole earth throws back enough of th e sun’s light on to the face of the moon for us to be back to see the parts of it which would otherwise be dark.

46. Why is the dark part of the moon not completely black?

A. The sun shines on the moon’s surface

B. The earth throws back sunlight on to the moon.

C. The moon throws back the light from the sun.

D. The moon has light of its own.

47. How often do we see the moon at its brightest?

A. Once every 29.5 days.

B. Once every year.

C. Once every week.

D. Once every 27 days.

48. What is meant by “seeing the old moon in the new moon’s arms”?

A. Part of the moon’s surface is lighted by the sun.

B. The new moon is at its brightest.

C. The dark parts of the moon are bright enough for us to see.

D. We can see the dark parts of the moon, though not clearly.

49. Which of these is true?

A. The light by which we see the old moon comes from the sun.

B. The moon’s diameter is exactly one fourth of that of the earth.

C. The moon which appears round at its brightest is called full moon.

D. The part of the moon which is not lighted by the sun is completely dark.

Passage C

One evening after dinner, Mr. and Mrs. William called a family meeting. “We’ve had to make a difficult decision.” Mr. William announced. “You see, your mother has been off ered a post as co-director of a television in Chicago. Unluckily, the station is not here. After thinking long and hard about it, we’ve concluded that the right decision is to move to Chicago.”

Peter looked shocked, while his sister Amy breathlessly s tarted asking when they’d be moving: “It’s surprising, but exciting!” she said. Peter simply said, “We can’t go —I can’t leave all my friends. I’d rather stay here and live with Tommy!”

Mr. and Mrs. William hoped that by the time they moved in August, Peter would grow more accustomed to the idea of leaving. However, he showed no signs of accepting the news, refusing to pack his belongings.

When the morning of the move arrived, Peter was nowhere to be found. His parents called Tommy’s house, but Tommy’s mother said she hadn’t seen Peter. Mrs. William became increasingly worried, while her husband felt angry with their son for behaving so irresponsibly.

What they didn’t know was that Peter had started walking over to Tommy’s house, with a faint idea of hiding in Tommy’s attic (阁楼)for a few days. But something happened on the way as Peter walked past all the familiar landscape of the neighborhood: the fence that he and his mother painted, the tree that he and his sister used to climb, the park where he and his father often took evening walks together. How much would these mean without his family, who make them special in the first place? Peter didn’t take the time to answer that question but instead hurried back to his house, wondering if there were any moving cartons(纸板箱)the right size to hold his record collection.

50. The conflict(分歧)in this story was caused by ________.

A. Peter and Amy’s different tempers(脾气)

B. Peter’s disagreement with his parents about their move

D. Mr. and Mrs. William’s words of Peter’s irresponsibility

51. Peter and Amy were both _________ after hearing the move.

A. worried about packing

B. angry and worried

C. anxious for more details

D. surprised

52. The reason for Peter’s going home was that _______.

A. he realized his family was essential(重要的)with him

B. he did not want to be left behind

C. he hoped to reach an agreement with his parents

D. He wished to be a more responsible person

53. What would more probably happen next?

A. Peter would bring his records over to the Tommy’s house.

B. Mr. and Mrs. William would call the police.

C. Mr. and Mrs. William would start searching for Peter.

D. Peter would join his family for house moving.

Passage D

On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks was planning to take the bus home from work as usual. She had just finished working as a seamstress(女裁缝) at a department store and then walked to the bus stop. As she first boarded the bus, she noticed that the driver was the same man who had sent her off his bus years earlier because she would not go around to the back door after she was already on the bus. She decided to get on anyway and sit down, but she did not sit at the very front of the bus. She took a seat next to a black man in the first row that “colored” people were allowed to sit in. At the next stop, some white people got on the bus. After they filled up the white seats, one man was left standing. When the driver noticed him standing, he told Rosa and the others in her row to let the man have a seat. Three people stood up, but the driver saw that Rosa was still sitting there. He asked if she would stand up, and she refused. Then he told her he would have her arrested, and Rosa told him he could do that.

A few minutes later, two policemen got on the bus. When the driver told them that Rosa would not stand up, the policemen walked over to her an d asked her why she wouldn’t get up. Rosa said she didn’t think she should stand up and asked, “Why do you push us around?” One policeman answered, “I don’t know, but the law is the law, and you are under arrest.” As soon as he said that, Rosa stood up. Then one of the policemen picked up her purse while the other picked up her shopping bag, and the three left the bus. Finally, they took Rosa to the police station in the car.

Rosa’s action that day started a citywide boycott(联合抵制) of the bus system by Blacks that lasted more than a year. This later resulted in the decision against segregation on city buses in the US.

How to Survive Embarrassing (令人尴尬的)Moments

Have you ever done something embarrassing? At that moment, you probably wished you could disappear into thin air. You can keep the damage to the minimum. Here's some help.

Laugh it off

You're staring at your crush (意中人) so hard that you walk into a wall. You trip over your own feet and drop all your books. The best thing you can do? As long as you're not seriously hurt, laugh it off. Say like "Hey, I can teach you to do that if you want to!" or "It took me years to learn that!" By laughing at yourself, you show people you're confident and still in control of the situation. That's bound to make a stronger impression than the fact that you dropped a stack of books.

Move on

Some situations are too personal to laugh off. Your underwear falls out of your backpack. Your bathing suit falls off in the pool. You pass gas while giving a presentation. Making a joke would just call more attention to what happened — and that's the last thing you want. What now? You can just pretend nothing happened and go back to what you were doing, or you can acknowledge it with a "Oh, that was awkward" and then move on.

Apologize and move on

Some embarrassing situations pack a double punch. Not only do you embarrass yourself, but you make someone else feel bad. You say to a friend that another friend is such a copycat, and then realize the copycat is standing right behind you. You imitate your teacher's unusual accent just as the teacher walks in. Now you're embarrassed and they're mad or hurt.

If you've been disrespectful to a teacher or a parent, accept whatever consequences (后果,结果)without complaint. If you've hurt a friend, do your best to make it up to them. Once you've done all you can to make things right again, move on. If someone else brings it up, just say, "I feel bad enough about that —can we just let it go, please?"

The next time you're stuck in an embarrassing moment, remind yourself that you're a strong

This even was started by Jennifer Barlow of Midlothian, Virginia in 2003, and it is becoming more popular each year. It has been supported by the International Dark-Sky Association, the American Astronomical Society, and the Astronomical League. This even always occurs in April, during the week of the new moon so that the sky can be as dark as possible for the best viewing conditions. “It is my wish that people could see the night sky without other light in the sky as our ancestors (祖先) saw it hundreds of years ago,” explains Barlow. Since it only lasts a week and not everyone in the country will take part in it, how will the National Dark-Sky Week reduce light pollution? The main goal of NDSW is to increase awareness (意识) of the harmful effects of light pollution. It is not possible for all of the light pollution in this part of the world to disappear. However, it is possible to make a small difference in the quality of the night sky. Another goal of this even is to promote (促进) the use of better lighting systems that direct light toward the ground instead of up into the sky. Jennifer Barlow states, “The night sky is a gift of such beauty that it should not be polluted by wasted light. In this way, our children will not lose touch with the wonder of our universe.” 11. This passage is mainly about ______________. A. better lighting systems B. the beauty of the night sky C. the harm of light pollution D. the National Dark-Sky Week 12.
