第2章

Problem1: Dee Trader opens a brokerage account, and purchases 300 shares of Internet Dreams at $40 per share. She borrows $4,000 from her

8%.

a. What is the margin i n Dee’s account when she first purchases the stock?

b. If the price falls to $30 per share by the end of the year, what is the remaining margin in her account? If the maintenance margin requirement is 30%, will she receive a margin call?

c. What is the rate of return on her investment?:

answers:

a.The stock is purchased for: (300 ? $40) = $12,000

The amount borrowed is $4,000. Therefore, the investor put up equity, or margin,

of $8,000. 5 points

b.If the share price falls to $30, then the value of the stock falls to $9,000($30*300). By the end of the year, the amount of the loan owed to the broker grows to:

($4,000 ?1.08) = $4,320. // The interest rate on the loan is 8%.

Therefore, the remaining margin in the investor’s account is:

($9,000 - $4,320) = $4,680. 5 points

The percentage margin is now: ($4,680/$9,000) = 0.52 = 52%. >30%

Therefore, the investor will not receive a margin call. 5 points

c.The rate of return on the investment over the year is:

(Ending equity in the account - Initial equity)/Initial equity

= ($4,680 - $8,000)/$8,000 = -0.415 = -41.5% 5 points

Problem2: Old Economy Traders opened an account to short sell 1,000 shares of Internet Dreams from the problem 1.// at $40 per share// The initial margin requirement was 50%. (The margin account pays no interest.) A year later, the price of Internet Dreams has risen from $40 to $50, and the stock has paid a dividend of $2 per share. 15 points

a. What is the remaining margin in the account?

answers:

a. The initial margin was: (0.50 ? 1,000 ? $40) = $20,000 As a result of the increase in the stock

price, Old Economy Traders loses: ($10 ? 1,000) = $10,000. Therefore, margin

decreases by $10,000. Moreover, Old Economy Traders must pay the dividend of

$2 per share to the lender of the shares, so that the margin in the account decreases

by an additional $2,000. Therefore, the remaining margin is: ($20,000 - $10,000 -

$2,000) = $8,000 .or. (20000+40000)-50000-2000 5 points

b. If the maintenance margin requirement is 30%, will Old Economy receive a margin call?

b. The percentage margin is: ($8,000/$50,000) = 0.16 = 16%

Therefore, there will be a margin call. 5 points

c. What is the rate of return on the investment?

c. The rate of return on the investment is:

(Ending equity in the account - Initial equity)/Initial equity

= ($8,000 - $20,000)/$20,000 = -0.60 = -60.0%

Or. = (40000-50000-2000)-20000/$20000= -60.0% 5 points

Problem3: Consider the following limit-order book of a broker. The last trade in the stock took place at a price of $50. 10 points

a. If a market-buy order for 100 shares comes in, at what price will it be filled?

a.The buy order will be filled at the best limit-sell order price(the asked price of the

specialist): $50.25 5 points

b. At what price would the next market-buy order be filled?

b.The next market buy order will be filled at the next-best limit-sell order price: $51.50

5 points

Problem4: Suppose that Intel currently is selling at $40 per share. You buy 500 shares, using $15,000 of your own money and borrowing the remainder of the purchase price from your broker. The rate on the margin loan is 8%. 27points

answers:

a. What is the percentage increase in the net worth of your brokerage

account if the price of Intel immediately changes to (i) $44; (ii) $40; (iii) $36?

The total cost of the purchase is ($40 ? 500) = $20,000. You borrow $5,000 you’re your

broker, and invest $15,000 of your own funds. Your margin account starts out with net

worth of $15,000.

a. (i) Net worth increases to: ($44 ? 500) – $5,000 = $17,000

Percentage gain = $2,000/$15,000 = 0.1333 = 13.33%

(ii) With price unchanged, net worth is unchanged.

Percentage gain = zero

(iii) Net worth falls to ($36 ? 500) – $5,000 = $13,000

Percentage gain = –$2,000/$15,000 = –0.1333 = –13.33%

6 points

b. If the maintenance margin is 25%, how low can Intel’s price fall before you get a margin

call?

b. The value of the 500 shares is: 500P

Equity is: (500P – $5,000)

You will receive a margin call when:

P 500000 ,5$

P

500-

= 0.25 ? when P = $13.33 or lower

5 points

c. How would your answer to (b) change if you had financed the initial purchase with only $10,000 of your own money?

c.The value of the 500 shares is 500P. But now you have borrowed $10,000 instead of

$5,000. Therefore, equity is: (500P – $10,000)

You will receive a margin call when:

P 500000 ,

10

$

P

500-

= 0.25 ? when P = $26.67

With less equity in the account, you are far more vulnerable to a margin call.

d. What is the rate of return on your margined position (assuming again that you invest $15,000 of your own money) if Intel is selling after one year at (i) $44; (ii) $40;(iii) $36?

d. By the end of the year, the amount of the loan owed to the broker grows to:

($5,000 ? 1.08) = $5,400

The equity in your account is: (500P – $5,400)

Initial equity was $15,000. Therefore, your rate of return after one year is as

e. Continue to assume that a year has passed. How low can Intel’s price fall before you get a margin call?

e. The value of the 500 shares is: 500P

Equity is: (500P – $5,400)// ($5,000 ? 1.08) = $5,400

You will receive a margin call when:

P 500400 ,5$

P

500-

= 0.25 ? when P = $14.40 or lower 5 points

Problem6: Suppose that you sell short 500 shares of Intel, currently selling for $40 per share, and give your broker $15,000 to establish your margin account.

a.If you earn no interest on the funds in your margin account, what will be your rate

of return after one year if Intel stock is selling at (i) $44; (ii) $40; (iii) $36? Assume

that Intel pays no dividends.

answers:

a. The gain or loss on the short position is: (–500 ??P)

Invested funds are $15,000.

Therefore: rate of return = (–500 ??P)/15,000

The rate of return in each of the three scenarios is:

(i) rate of return = (–500 ? $4)/$15,000 = –0.1333 = –13.33%

(ii) rate of return = (–500 ? $0)/$15,000 = 0%

(iii)rate of return = [–500 ? (–$4)]/$15,000 = +0.1333 = +13.33%

b. If the maintenance margin is 25%, how high can Intel’s price rise before you get a

margin call?

b.Total assets in the margin account are:

$20,000 (from the sale of the stock) + $15,000 (the initial margin) = $35,000

Liabilities are: 500P

A margin call will be issued when:

P 500P

500

000

,

35

$-= 0.25 ? when P = $56 or higher

c. Redo parts (a) and (b), now assuming that Intel’s dividend (paid at year end) is $1 per share.( group 1)

c.With a $1 dividend, the short position must now pay on the borrowed shares:

($1/share ? 500 shares) = $500

Rate of return is now: [(–500 ??P) – 500]/15,000

(i) rate of return = [(–500 ?4)– 500]/15,000 = –0.1667 = –16.67%

(ii) rate of return = [(–500 ?0) – 500]/15,000 = –0.0333 = –3.33%

(iii) rate of return = [(–500) ? (–4) – 500]/15,000 = +0.1000 = +10.00% Total assets are $35,000, and liabilities are: (500P + 500)

A margin call will be issued when:

P 500

500 P

= 0.25 ? when P = $55.20 or higher

Addition: An expiring put will be exercised and the stock will be sold if the stock price is

below the exercise price. A stop-loss order causes a stock sale when the stock price falls below some limit. Compare and contrast the two strategies of purchasing put options versus issuing a stop-loss order.

answers:

The stop-loss order will be executed once the stock price decreases to the limit price. If the

stock price later rebounds, the investor does not participate in the gains because the

investor no longer owns the stock.

In contrast, the put option need not be exercised when the stock price falls below the

exercise price. An investor who owns a share of stock and a put option can hold on to both securities. If the stock price never rebounds, the investor can eventually exercise the put by selling the stock for the exercise price. This provides the same downside protection as the stop-loss order. If the price does rebound, however, the investor benefits because the investor still owns the stock. This advantage of the put over the stop-loss order justifies the cost of the put.

视听说4 听力原文及答案 Unit 1 Leisure activities Part 1 listening one Ever wish you could do magic tricks, or introduce yourself as “magician” at a party? Imagine, everybody wants to have fun, but nothings’ really happening, it’s time for you to show one of your new tricks. Here, you can learn how, and without any need for special materials or much practice. A trick with a coin, a handkerchief and a friend: Put the coin on your palm. Cover the coin with the handkerchief. Ask several people to put their hands beneath the handkerchief and feel the coin, to make sure that it is still there. Then take the corner of the handkerchief and pull it rapidly off your hand. The coin has gone! How? You must make sure the last friend who feels the coin knows the trick and removes the coin when he seems to be just feeling it. And nobody knows where it has gone! A trick with a piece of paper and a pencil: Tell your friend that you can communicate your thoughts without speaking to other people. Write on the piece of paper the word No. Don't let your friends see what you have written. Say, "Now I will communicate this word into your minds." Pretend to concentrate. Ask them if they know what is written on the paper. They will say, "No!" And you say, "Quite correct! I wrote No on the paper!" A trick with an egg and some salt: Ask your friends to stand the egg upright on the table. They won't manage to do it. Say that you can speak to the chicken inside. Say, "Chicken! Can you hear me? Get ready to balance your egg!" When you first get the egg back from your friends, pretend to kiss the egg at the base. Make the base wet. Then put the base into salt which is in your other hand. The salt will stick to the egg. Then put the egg on the table. Twist the egg around a few times as this will arrange the grains of salt. Then it will stand up. Don't forget to thank the chicken. Questions: 1.What does the magician ask people to do in the first trick 2.What happens to the coin? 3.How does the magician prove that he can communicate his thoughts to the audience in the second trick? 4.What is the first step to make the egg stand upright? 5.What else is needed to make the egg stand upright? 大学英语视听说2Unit5听力原文

Unit5 Ⅰ.Lead-in 1.People keep pets for a variety of reasons. Some feel lonely and need company. Other people keep pets for security. Still others buy pets just to be in fashion. Finally, some people keep animals at home just out of love or pity. Their hearts are full of love, which pours out naturally for animals as well as humans. 2.Most people prefer dogs to cats. Dogs are more loyal to their owners than cats are. Also, dogs are more intelligent than cats. They can carry out human instructions and perform fairly complicated functions. Moreover, with its strength and agility, the dog is capable of protecting the house and its master. However, I wouldn't go as far as to claim that cats are worthless. Thanks to their soft fur, meek tempers and cute faces, they are often ladies' favorites. 3.It's hard to arrive at a conclusion on this question. It is obvious that if a pet like a cat is kept in the apartment without much chance of going out, it looks sad and inactive. Without proper physical exercise and enough exposure to the sun, it tends to become weak. However, they also have their compensation. In a human household pets are normally well fed. I should like to point out that a pet's intelligence is also an important factor. A dog or a cat may be intelligent enough to feel lonely, but I doubt whether less intelligent animals like a tortoise or fish can feel the difference between the human home and the wild or whether they can develop a feeling of loneliness, sadness or homesickness. In any case, a human home can provide them with better living conditions. 4.In my opinion, it is all right for us to eat meat such as pork, beef and chicken. To explain this, let me quote from the movie "The Lion King". The father lion tells his son that it is all right for them to eat the antelope: "When we die, our bodies become the grass. And the antelope eat the grass. And so we are all connected in the great Circle of Life." In the case of dog meat, people's opinions seem to vary. I think with the progress of human civilization and improvement of the living standards, we should discard the habit of eating dogs, since they are so intelligent and so loyal to us. Ⅲ.Listening In Task1:Dogs aren't allowed here! Manager: I'm sorry, Miss, but dogs aren't allowed in this theater. Mary: But I have a ticket for him. Manager: I'm very sorry, but animals aren't permitted. Mary: You don't understand. This is a special case. My dog is so well-trained and so intelligent that he's almost human. Manager: I see that you have an exceptional animal, but... Mary: I promise you that if there is any problem we'll leave the theater immediately. I promise you that this dog isn't like any other dog you've ever seen. Manager: Well... all right. I'll let you go in, since the theater is almost empty tonight. But your dog will have to behave himself, or you will have to leave. Mary: Thank you very much. Task2:Put the cat out!

The ability to catch the exact num bers spoken in English is an important but difficult skill for a Chinese learner. A good way is to pra ctice over and over again the pronunciation of the numbers, particularly the different ways to say thirteen and thirty, fourteen and forty, etc. It also helps to practice writing down the numbers yo u hear quickly in numerical forms, without translating them into Chinese. You're going to hear a p assage about Michael Jordan, a retired American professional basketball player. Listen carefully and fill in the blanks with the missing numbers. Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time. He was born on Feb.17, 1963, in Broo klyn, New York. He is 1.98 meters tall and weighs 216 pounds. Jordan joined the Chicago Bulls tea m for the 1984 season. In the 1986 season he shot 3041 points, the third highest score ever. He w as named NBA Slam Dunk Champion(扣篮冠军)in 1987 and won the Most Valuable Player Award in 1988, an honor repeated four times in the next ten years to 1998. Jordan guided his team to win six NBA championships during the 1990s, s coring 45 points during the sixth and last game of the 1998 NBA finals. In 1999, he was named th e greatest North American athlete of the 20th century. Jordan left the NBA at the beginning of th e 1993-1994 NBA season to pursue a career in baseball. Since his baseball game wasn't quite as g ood as his basketball games, he finally gave it up to rejoin the Bulls in 1995. [ti:Unit 1 Part B] Listening Tasks A Conversation Why Don't You Join Me at the Gym Sometime? Exercise 1 Listen to the conversation and choose the right answers to the questions you hear. Peter: Hi Laura. Where are you heading with that big bag? Laura: Hi, Peter. I'm off to the gym. I've got to stay in shape, you know. I try to go three times a w eek, but I'm busy so I can't always make it. Peter: I know more women who work out than men. What's the main reason you work out? For y our health, or to look good? Laura: To be honest, for both. With women, good looks are always a very important consideration . Peter: If they were honest, most men who work out would admit that they also do it to look bett er, and not merely for health reasons. Laura: How about you? Do you get any regular exercise? Peter: I do a lot of walking, for exercise and enjoyment sometimes ten to twenty kilometers at a ti me but I never go to the gym like you do. Laura: Well, walking is good exercise. How about sports? Peter: Not since my school days. I used to love playing baseball, but it's impossible to get enough people together for a game now. Mostly I just watch sports on TV. Laura: I play tennis fairly regularly with my friends, and sometimes go swimming and cycling by m yself.
