Passage L

The greatest recent changes have been in the lives of women. During the twentieth century there was an unusual shortening of the time of a woman's life spent in caring for children. A woman marrying at the end of the 19th century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which custom, chance and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman's youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and is likely to take paid work until retirement at sixty. Even while she has the care of children, her work is lightened by household appliances (家用电器)and convenience foods.

This important change in woman's way of life has only recently begun to have its full effect on woman's economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school at the first opportunity and most of them took a full-time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen. Many girls stay at school after that age. And though women tend to marry younger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born.

Very many more afterwards return to full- or part-time work. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with both husband and wife accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfaction of family life, and with both husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money and running the home, according to the abilities and interest of each them.

Passage 2.

Poet William Stafford once said that we are defined more by the detours(绕行路)in life than by the narrow road toward goals. I like this image. But it was quite by accident that I discovered the deep meaning of his words.

For years we made the long drive from our home in Seattle to my parents1 home in Boise in nine hours.

- 8

We traveled the way most people do: the fastest, shortest, easiest road, especially when I was alone with four noisy, restless (坐立不安的)kids who hate confinement (限制)and have strong opinions about everything.

Road trips felt risky, so I would drive fast, stopping only when I had to. We would stick to the freeways and arrive tired.

But then Banner, our lamb (羊羔)was bom. He was rejected by his mama days before our planned trip to Boise. I had two choices: leave Banner with my husband, or take him with me. My husband made the decision for me.

That is how I found myself on the road with four kids, a baby lamb and nothing but my everlasting optimism to see me through. We took the country roads out of necessity. We had to stop every hour, let Banner shake out his legs and feed him. The kids chased him and one another. They'd get back in the car breathless and energized, smelling fresh from the cold air.

We explored side roads, catching grasshoppers (蚂蚱)in waist-high grass. Even if we simply looked out of the car windows at baby pigs following their mother, or fish leaping out of the water, it was better than the best ride down the freeway. Here was life. And new horizons(见识).

We eventually arrived at my parents' doorstep astonishingly fresh and full of stories.

I grew brave with the trip back home and creative with my disciplining technique. On an empty section of road, everyone started quarreling. I stopped the car, ordered all kids out and told them to meet me up ahead. I parked my car half a mile away and read my book in sweet silence.

Some road trips are by necessity fast and straight. But that trip with Banner opened our eyes to a world available to anyone adventurous enough to wander around and made me realize that a detour may uncover the best part of journey 一and the best part of yourself.

B ? take a deep breath

C.take care of the lamb

A- Freeways are where beauty hides.

B ? Getting close to nature adds to the joy of life.

C.Enjoying the beauty of nature benefits one's health.

D.One should follow side roads to watch wild animals.

9.Why did the author ask the kids to get out of the car on their way back home?

A- To give herself some time to read.

B . To order some food for them.

C.To play a game with them.

D.To let them cool down.

10.What could be the best title for the passage?

A.Charm of the Detour

Passage 4.

Imagine a mass (大块)of floating waste is two times the size of the state of Texas (德克萨斯州)? Texas has a land area of more than 678, 000 square kilometers. So it might be difficult to imagine anything twice as big.

All together, this mass of waste flowing in the North Pacific Ocean (北太平洋)is known as the Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch. It weighs about 3,500,000 tons. The waste includes bags, bottles and containers (盒子)-- plastic products of all kinds.

The eastern part of the Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch is about 1,600 kilometers west of California. The western part is west of the Hawaiian Islands]夏威夷岛)and east of Japan. The area has been described as a kind of oceanic desert, with light winds and slow moving water currents. The water moves so slow that garbage from all over the world collects there.

In recent years, there have been growing concerns (关注)about the floating garbage and its effect on sea creatures and human health. Scientists say thousands of animals get trapped in the floating waste, resulting in death or injury. Even more die from a lack of food or water after swallowing pieces of plastic. The trash can also make animals feel full, lessening their desire to eat or drink.

The floating garbage also can have harmful effects on people. There is an increased threat of infection of disease from polluted waste, and from eating fish that swallowed waste. Divers 。替水员)can also get trapped in the plastic.

Its existence first gained public attention in 1997. That was when racing boat captain and oceanographer(海洋学家)Charles Moore and his crew sailed into the garbage while returning from a racing event. Five years earlier, another oceanographer learned of the trash after a shipment of rubber duckies (橡皮鸭玩具)got lost at sea. Many of those toys are now part of the Great Pacific Ocean

Garbage Patch.

Passage 6.

Sometimes you'll hear people say that you can't love others until you love yourself. Sometimes you'll hear people say that you can't expect someone else to love you until you love yourself. Either way, you've got to love yourself first and this can be tricky. Sure we all know that we're the apple of our parents5 eyes, and that our Grandmas think we're great talents and our Uncle Roberts think that we will go to the Olympics. But sometimes it's a lot harder to think such nice thoughts about ourselves. If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge, it is time you build a positive self-image and learn to love yourself.

Self-image is your own mind's picture of yourself. This image includes the way you look, the way you act, the way you talk and the way you think. Interestingly, our self-images are often quite different from the images others hold about US. Unfortunately, most of these images are more negative than they should be. Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to changing your self-image and your whole world.

The best way to defeat a passive self-image is to step back and decide to stress your successes. That is, make a list if you need to, but write down all of the great things you do every day. Don't allow doubts to occur in it.

It very well might be that you are experiencing a negative self-image because you can't move past one flaw or weakness that you see about yourself. Well, roll up your sleeves and make a change of it as your primary task. If you think you're silly because you aren't good at math, find a tutor. If you think you're weak because you can't run a mile, get to the track and practice. If you think you're dull because you don't wear the latest trends, buy a few new clothes. But remember, just because you think it doesn't mean it's true.

The best way to get rid of a negative self-image is to realize that your image is far from objective, and

B. are probably untrue

D. have different functions

B? To make your life successful. D. To

change the way you think.

29.What is the passage mainly about?

A. How to prepare for your success.

C. How to build a positive self-image. B.How to face challenges in your life. How to develop your good qualities.

D. People in general.

to actively convince yourself of your positive qualities. Changing the way you think and working on those you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting a positive self-image. When you can pat yourself on the back, you'll know you're well on your way. Good luck!

26.You need to build a positive self-image when you.

A. dare to challenge yourself

B. feel it hard to change yourself

C. are unconfident about yourself

D. have a high opinion of yourself 27. According to the passage, our self-images

A. have positive effects

C. are often changeable

28.How should you change your self-image according to the passage?

A. To keep a different image of others.

C. To understand your own world.

Passage 2.

For many people today, reading is no longer relaxation. To keep up their work they must read letters,

reports, trade publications, interoffice communications, not to mention newspapers and magazines: a never-ending flood of words. In 21 a job or advancing in one, the ability to read and comprehend

22can mean the difference between success and failure. Yet the unfortunate fact is that most of us are 23 _ readers. Most of us develop poor reading 24 at an early age, and never get over them. The

main deficiency 25 in the actual stuff of language itself-——words. Taken individually, words have 26 meaning until they are strung together into phrases, sentences and paragraphs. 27 , however, the untrained reader does not read groups of words. He laboriously reads one word at a time, often regressing to 28_ words or passages- Regression (f到退),the tendency to look back over 29 you have just read, is a common bad habit in reading. Another habit which 30 down the speed of reading is vocalization sounding each word either orally or mentally as 31 reads.

To overcome these bad habits, some reading clinics use a device called an 32 , which moves a bar (or curtain) down the page at a predetermined speed. The bar is set at a slightly faster rate 33 the reader finds comfortable, in order to "stretch” him.The accelerator forces the reader to read fast, 34 word-by-word

reading, regression and subvocalization, practically impossible. At first 35 is sacrificed for speed. But when you learn to read ideas and concepts, you will not only read faster, 36 your comprehension will improve. Many people have found 37 reading skill drastically improved after some training. 38 Charice Au, a business manager, for instance, his reading rate was a reasonably good 172 words a minute 39 the training, now it is an excellent 1,378 words a minute. He is delighted that how he can 40 a lot more reading material in a short period of time.
