I’m thankful for cancer in many ways. Does that sound crazy? I wouldn’t wish it on anybody and I don’t want to go through it again, but it was a teacher. It helped me to treasure every single day. It forced me to prioritize(确定优先顺序)my life. Things that were once important seemed foolish. It pushed me off the rolling wheel this society calls sacred and let me pursue the desires of my heart, instead of my wallet. It gave me the ability to see life as fragile, not one day promised. It allowed me to treasure my three beautiful children, who sometimes brought heartache along with joy as they grew up, who are all now in college and can now spell beautifully.

When I hit my 5th year of survival, I left my job to write full time. I decided not to write one more word about anything that didn’t matter to me. It was a step of faith, but it made perfect sense. Cancer taught me not to let the opportunities

of your heart pass you by because we are not promised “one day” or “someday”. On my 40th birthday, I rode gocarts with 30 of my closest friends to celebrate. The numbers 4-0 hanging across the wall were a beautiful sight.

I celebrated my 10th year of survival on a boat in the Amazon in the rainforest of Brazil. I sat on the top level and watched the sun rise and form somewhere so deep inside, I thanked God for the opportunity to experience life through facing death.

You see, life is become a series of celebrations. Last month, I celebrated my 13th year of survival and embraced(迎接) my 44th birthday. Next month, Richard and I will celebrate our 24th anniversary. Leslie, my oldest, turned 21 last year. My twins are 20.

A.My life after cancer B.Because of cancer

With regard to any type of communication there are three basic principles to remember: be clear, be concise and be correct. Let us consider each of these more fully.

Clear. The person who sends the message—the transmitter(传送者)---must be sure

about what they need to say. The message should be presented in a logical way, so that the receiver knows exactly what they are required to do. Avoiding any ambiguity. Any lack of clarity means that time will be wasted in seeking confirmation. Concise . Don’t make the message any longer than it should be. Use plain language. Choose your words carefully, and don’t use any more than you really have to. Correct. Pay attention to the wording of the message. Before you send a message, check it to make sure that it doesn’t contain any errors. Many messages fail because they adopt the wrong language for the task. Being too formal can create hostility; while being too casual can mean that your message are not treated seriously.

Finally, don’t fo rget that communication is a two-way thing. Receivers of messages should give prompt feedback, to let the senders know that the message has been received and understood. This is especially important if the message is not clear. Don’t take action unless you are sure of what you have to do. And if in doubt, check.

37.What’s the best title of the text?

A.How to communicate

B.Communication is a two-way thing

C.Sending and receiving message

D.The basic principles of communication

38.The underlined word “ambiguity” (paragraph 2) roughly means ________ A.too long B.unclear C.incorrect D.not logical

39.From the passage we can infer that________

A.The language you use for a good communication shouldn’t be too formal or too casual.

B.Before you send a message, check it to make sure that it doesn’t contain any errors.

C.If your adopt the wrong language for the task., all messages will fail

D.For the sake of logic, don’t make the message too long.

While income worry is a rather common problem of the aged, loneliness is another problem that aged parents may face. Of all the reasons that explain their loneliness, a large geographical distance between parents and their children is the major one. This phenomenon(现象)is c ommonly known as “Empty Nest Syndrome”(空巢综合症). In order to seek better chances outside their countries, many young people have gone abroad, leaving their parents behind with no clear idea of when they will return home. Their parents spend countless lonely days and nights, taking care of themselves, in the hope that someday their children will come back to stay with them. The fact that most of these young people have gone to Europeanized or Americanized societies makes it unlikely that they will hold as tightly to the value of duty as they would have if they had not left their countries. Whatever the case, it has been noted that the values they hold do not necessarily match what they actually do. This geographical and cultural distance also prevents the grown-up children from providing response(回应)in time for their aged parents living by themselves. The situation in which grown-up children live far away from their aged parents has been described as “distant parent phenomenon”, which is common both in developed countries and in developing countries. Our society has not yet been well prepared for “Empty Nest Syndrome”.

40.According to the passage, the loneliness of aged parents is mainly caused by _________.

A.their earlier experience of feeling lonely

B.the unfavorable living conditions in their native countries

C.the common worry about their income

D.the geographical distance between parents and children

41.Many young people have gone abroad, leaving their aged parents behind, to

_________.

A.live in the countries with more money

B.seek a better place for their aged parents

C.continue their studies abroad

D.realize their dreams in foreign countries

42.From the last paragraph, we can infer that ________.

A.the situations in the developed and developing countries are different B.“Empty Nest Syndrome” has arrived unexpectedly in our society C.children will become independent as soon as they go abroad

D.the aged parents are not fully prepared for “Empty Nest Syndrome”

You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheetwith a single line through the center. Passage One Science is not a set of unquestionable results but a way of understanding the world around us. Its real work is slow. The scientific method , as many of us learned in school, is a gradual process that begins with a purpose or problem or question to be answered. It includes a list of materials, a procedure to follow, a set of observations to make and, finally, conclusions to reach. In medicine, when a new drug is proposed that might cure or control a disease, it is first tested on a large random group of people, and their reactions are then compared with those of another random group not given the drug. All reactions in both groups are carefully recorded and compared, and the drug is evaluated. All of this takes time and patience. It’s the result of course, that makes the best news—not the years of quiet work that characterize the bulk of scientific inquiry. After an experiment is concluded or an observation is made, the result continues to be examined critically. When it is submitted for publication, it goes to a group of the scientist’s colleagues, w ho review the work. As President Clinton said that day, the possibility that life existed on Mars billions of years ago was potentially one of the great discoveries of our time. After the excitement wore down and initial papers were published, other researchers began looking at samples from the same meteorite. Some concluded that the “evidence of life”was mostly contamination from Antarctic ice or that there was nothing organic at all in the rock. Today, doctors and scientists are in almost every country hypnotize people to help them with their problems. What is hypnotism, and how does it work? Many people think that a hypnotist puts people to sleep. Then he makes the hypnotized people do strange things. This is not what a hypnotist does. Hypnotism is really just a way to relax the mind and body. What are some of the uses of hypnotism? We go to a hypnotist because w e have a problem. The problem makes us unhappy. The hypnotist asks us to think hard about something and relax. When we are relaxed, t he hypnotist gives us some ideas to help us with our problems. Hypnotism can help people to remember things. The police sometimes ask hypnotists to help them. For example, a man sees an accident. He forgets the license number of the car he sees. If he is hypnotized he may remember it. The police can then find the car and catch the driver. People who are hypnotized can also make mistakes or say something that isn't true. People remember what they think they saw. That may not be what really happened. The police don't hypnotize people who do something wrong. Why not? People who are hypnotized may say something that isn't true. A person who has done something bad has a good reason to say something that isn't true. 1. Hypnotist helps people by ____. [A] putting them to sleep [B] helping them to get relaxed [C] offering his ideas about their problems [D] making them forget their problems 2. When hypnotized, some people may say something that is not true, because ____. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?____ [A] Hypnotism is very different form what it used to be. [B] When a person is hypnotized, his body gets relaxed, while his mind works hard. [C] Hypnotism is much more widely used today than it was thousands of years ago. [D] When hypnotized, a person will do something strange. 4. The passage mainly talks about ____. [A] how hypnotism works [B] the development of hypnotism [C] the use of hypnotism [D] the wonder of hypnotism
