Sherry, a young friend of mine, suffers from insomnia (失眠) but she’s found a new w ay to deal with her sleeplessness. Instead of just tossing and turning in bed all night or reading a book, she turns on the computer in her living room and connects with other night owls through a live streaming (网络直播) app. As she hums (哼唱) along to pop tunes or talks about her day, people will post messages on her computer screen and sometimes even send her virtual gifts.

Sherry is just one of hundreds of millions who have been drawn to live streaming, the hottest new trend in social media, which lets people share their lives spontaneously in real time. Live streaming, itself, isn’t new. People have been able to watch sports events and lectures live online for years. But with new apps that became available in 2007, viewers can now interact with what they see on the screen by posting questions and comments, and this has turned ordinary people, like Sherry, into stars of their own reality TV series.

However, this new trend has also drawn the attention of government regulators who are concerned about the content of some live streaming broadcasts. In April, 19 live streaming platforms were convicted（判罪）of allowing “improper” content to be broadcast. Defining“improper” can be difficult, but, generally, it means anything that has to do with sex or politics or is considered morally harmful. And there is now a new law that requires live streaming apps such as Douyu, YY and Yingke to hold a license to operate and to keep recordings of broadcasts and on-screen comments.

My friend Sherry has nothing to fear from the government regulators. If anything, her broadcasts are extremely dull (sorry Sherry!), as ar e most people’s broadcasts. But dullness is a small problem compared with the bigger problem of letting strangers see too much of your personal life. You’ve probably been warned about giving out personal information online and the same is true with live streaming. It can be dangerous. If you’re not careful, strangers can find out where you live, where you go to school and where you spend your free time.

It’s true that teens don’t get enough sleep，but changing the school starting time would have a chaotic effect and throw everyone off balance.

Scientists have shown that teens are more active later at night than children and adults，so most teens are probably staying up later for whatever reasons. “The re searchers measured the presence of the sleeppromoting hormone (荷尔蒙) in teenagers’ saliva (唾液) at different time of the day. They learned that the hormone levels rise later at night than they do in children and adults and remain at a higher level later in the morning. The crowd roars. Players jump out of their seats for a group hug while their opponents hang their head in despair. Commentators in more than a dozen languages declare the “ending of a dynasty” to more than 30 million online viewers. Soon after, the victors take center-stage in the Bird’s Nest Stadium to pick up a trophy and a check worth over $1.5 million. This is no Olympic event; it is the final of a gaming event: the League of Legends (LOL, 《英雄联盟》) World Championships 2017.

Many cite the game StarCraft (《星际争霸》) as the beginning of this phenomenon known as e-sports. Created in North America , the game began to take root in South Korea during the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997. While many young people had trouble finding jobs, they turned to playing StarCraft as a way to pass their time, and soon the game developed into a nation-wide craze. Players would form teams and live together to train more than ten hours a day to get their chance at becoming champions. It is not unlike what professional athletes undergo to achieve

success. Television stations began to broadcast tournaments and fans would gather in the hundreds of thousands to witness the events. Nearly ten years later, LOL is taking the fire from this small nation and spreading it across the world.

Many LOL players today enjoy a celebrity-like status that outshines even that of athletes. In China, the name “Uzi” (简自豪，中国《英雄联盟》职业选手) is almost a household name among the younger generat ion. In fact, the “fire” of e-sports has gone beyond LOL and is now seen in many other games.
