1. Compare the beginnings of the USA with those of the UK.

Key: The USA has a shorter history compared with that of the UK whose beginnings can be traced back to about 750 B.C. when the Celtic tribes came to settle in England. The history of the USA may be traced back to the arrival of the “Indians” yet the first English permanent settlement was es tablished in 1607 in Virginia. It took over a century for the American colonists to establish thirteen colonies along the Atlantic coast. The conflict between the American colonists and the British government led to the War of American Independence which ended with the birth of the United States of America. In Britain, after the Celtic tribes, Julius Caesar’s army occupied England. Then the three Germanic tribes came to England, who formed the English race. The Norman Conquest took place in 1066, which established the first House in the UK, the House of Normandy.

2. What was the importance of discovering America?

Key: The discovery of the New World was very important. Not only did it widen people’s horizons, but it also opened up fresh ground for the rising bourgeoisie. It promoted the development of commerce, sea navigation and industry, and provided the way for the rapid development of the colonization of North

3. How and why did the Puritans go to North America?

Key: Many people leaving the Old World for the New wanted to seek freedom of religious beliefs and better living conditions. It took more than a century for the British to establish the thirteen colonies along the Atlantic coast.

In the autumn of 1620, seventy-three men and twenty-nine women started for America in a ship named the “Mayflower”.

4. What were the conflicts between England and American colonists?

Key: (1) The British started imposing new taxes on sugar, coffee, textiles and other imported goods.

(2) Under the Quartering Act, the British required the colonists to house and feed the British soldiers. Under the Stamp Act, they issued special tax stamps to be attached to all newspapers, pamphlets, legal documents and licenses.

5. How did France, Spain and England divide North America after its discovery? Key: Spain claimed the southern part of North America, and the whole of South America except Brazil. Britain claimed the eastern shores of the present United States of America as rightfully belonging to her. France had started some settlements in Nova Scotia on the St. Lawrence River and on the Great Lakes. The whole Mississippi Valley had also been explored for the king of France.

6. How did the Normans establish the first House in Britain?

Key: William the Conqueror was king of England from 1066 to 1087. He conquered England in 1066 and defeated and killed Harold at Hastings. Thus he was called William the Conqueror. During his reign he established the first House in England and distributed estates to his followers.
