Problems may arise when your boss is away, and you must decide what action to take. Should you deal with them yourself? Contact your boss by cable or telephone? Get in touch with his deputy or partner or another member of the board of directors? Or simply leave them unsolved until your boss returns? Experience and common sense will help you to decide; no one can lay down hard and fast rules to cover all situations. A word of caution might come in useful at this stage. While initiative and enterprise are the necessary attributes of a good secretary, so are good judgment and awareness of one’s limitations. Be clear in your own mind just how far your

authority goes; get your facts straight; where possible, seek a second opinion. Then when you decide on a course of action, see it through hard, if is should misfire, be ready to take the consequence.

Paperless Office

Despite advances in data-storage technology, huge hard-disk drives and computer faxes, the volume of paper in the average office has continued to grow. It may be that the final the copy needs to be on paper, but the first five drafts should not be.

While the younger generations are comfortable working on screen, a lot of older people are not happy with a document draft unless they have a printed copy of it.(1)

Older computer programs were generally not capable of producing screen previews of what to be printed, and you simply had to see a draftcopy. (2)

This led to more copies, until the computer software finally produced a satisfactory document.

(3)

Word processing programs today are capable of showing, on screen, exactly what the output will look like, so that hard-copy drafts are generally not required for documents, spreadsheets, etc.

(4)

But in doing so, they miss the point, because the document is already on file.

(5)

On the other hand, disk drives are now big and cheap enough that they are a much better way of

storing data.

(A) Those days are now long gone.

(B) Printing it out wasteful laser cartridges and paper are both very expensive.

(C) Of course, you need to know exactly where everything is filed so you can easily

find it again.

(D) There used to be good reason for this.

(E) This draft would then need to be corrected for layout several times.

(F) Bu t, even though they don’t need to print out document any more, people still want copies “for the file”.

Ⅳ.Writing(20 marks) Read Text A, Text B and Text C, and complete the table below .写作(20分)阅读文章A,B,C完成下表。

英语四级考试真题及答案(卷一完整 版) 范文: Writing:家长角色 There are several possible reasons accountable for this phenomenon(中心句). To begin with, family in growing numbers has only one child; therefore, parents oftentimes focus all their attentions on that child and exert much pressure on him or her(原因一). Moreover, numerous parents intend to realize their unfulfilled dreams by letting their children learn what they failed to learn and apply for the college by which they failed to be accepted, because they have become richer and they believe that they have the power to make what they wanted and want come true now(原因二). For instance, my uncle used to be a poor man and his dream that one day he would become a violinist was broken because of lack of money. But he made a fortune by selling coals, and then forced his son, my younger brother to practice playing violin. My brother was a huge fan of sports, but now he has to play violin everyday unwillingly and ofter quarrels with their parents(举例:原来-然后-结局). Researchers in the Netherlands report that children who get more exercise, whether at school or on their own, 26to have higher GPAs and better scores on standardized tests. In a 27of 14 studies that looked at physical activity and academic28, investigators found that the more children moved, the better their grades were in school, 29in the basic subjects of math, English and reading. The data will certainly fuel the ongoing debate over whether physical education classes should be cut as schools struggle to 30on smaller budgets. The arguments against physical education have included concerns that gym time may be taking away from study time. With standardized test scores in the U.S. 31in recent years, some administrators believe students need to spend more time in the classroom instead of on the playground. But as these findings show, exercise and academics may not be 32exclusive. Physical activity can improve blood 33to the brain, fueling memory, attention and creativity, which are 34to learning. And exercise releases hormones that can improve 35and relieve stress, which can also help learning. So while it may seem as if kids are just exercising their bodies when they?re running around, they may actually be exercising their brains as well.
