How 50 he was to trust us! And no matter how 51 we held, Chris fell right 52 that sheet and landed on his stomach. This tiny seventy-pound boy had made a big 53 right in the sheet!

Because he wasn’t moving, we bent down to 54 if he was still alive. Slowly, he uttered these five words, “Ah stee hi da flow!”, in other words, “I still hit the floor!” Poor little man!

第三部分阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

Fruit or juice, which is nutritionally superior? This is almost the same as the age-old question: The chicken or the egg, which came first?

Usually, juicers remove the juice and some pulp (果肉) from fruits and/or vegetables. It takes a lot of fruit to make a container of juice. We do get all of the vitamins, minerals, beneficial plant chemicals and carbohydrates in juice out of a whole fruit. But we do not get much of the fiber, the part that aids our digestive process, fills us up, and may help protect us against heart diseases and certain cancers.

However, you may be surprised to discover that some juices actually contain more necessary nutrients (营养). For example, apples are not a good source of vitamin C, but many types of apple juice are fortified with vitamin C.

Juice typically has more calories than fresh fruit due to added sugar and less fiber. If calories are your primary concern, choose fresh fruit over juice and use water to quench your thirst. You can also look for low-calorie cranberry juice, typically sweetened with sugar substitute. We do not feel as filled up from juice because it does not contain any fiber. For many people, drinking a

caloric beverage (饮料), such as juice, is not as satisfying as eating the same amount of calories in food. For those of us who need to increase caloric intake (such as athletes, children, or teens) juice is a GREAT choice.

Kids love the taste of pure fruit juice, and parents love it because it is a healthy source of nutrients. But avoid junk fruit beverages which are mistaken for juice blends that contain various fruits like grape, apple and pear. These juices do not have the natural levels of vital nutrients that 100 percent pure juices like orange juice provide.

56. According to the passage, you’d better have _______ to help prevent heart disease.

A. fruit

B. juice

C. calories

D. minerals

57. What can we learn from this passage?

A. We can get out of fruit all the nutrients which aid our digestive process.

B. We can hardly determine which provides more nutrients, juice or fruit.

C. People may prefer juice to food in taking in the same amount of calories.

D. If you want more calories, fruit might be your better choice.

58. The underlined word “blends” in Paragraph5 probably means “______”.

A. containers

B. products

C. substitutes

D. mixtures

59. The author writes the passage mainly _______.

A. to remind people of negative effects of juice

B. to call on people to drink more juice

C. to help people learn more about fruit and juice

D. to persuade people to avoid junk juice containing various fruits

Are you ready to do your bit to stop global warming? Do you want to let the world know that

you believe it is not doing nearly enough to fight climate change?

On Saturday, March 29, you will have a chance to communicate your concerns—to tell Ottawa and the entire world that you are devoted to doing your part.

You can do it by turning off your lights during Earth Hour, from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Started last year by the World Wildlife Fund in Sydney, Australia, Earth Hour this year is going international, with 17 cities signed up so far, including Toronto. Others include Chicago, Manila, Tel Aviv, Copenhagen, Melbourne, and Christchurch, New Zealand.

The challenge for us Torontonians will be to show we are as devoted to fighting global warming as Sydneysiders were last year, when more than 2.2 million of them participated and slashed the city's power use by 10 per cent for the planned hour.

Of course, one hour of darkness isn’t going to stop global warming. But the thinking behind Earth Hour is that it gets people personally involved. Besides giving people a chance to register their concerns over climate change, the goal is to get them to start changing their wasteful habits. And we all have them, including some we aren't even aware of.

Did you know, for example, that you are still drawing power if you leave your cellphone charger plugged in after charging your phone? The same is true for other electronic devices that you think you've turned off.

If you want to make a difference, sign up today at http://www.wwf.ca/EarthHour and make a pledge (宣誓) to turn off your lights when Earth Hour arrives on March 29. Persuade your friends, co-workers and your employer or employees to do their part.

But don't wait for this symbolic gesture to raise awareness that we all have to be part of the solution. Start today to think about changes that can be made in your home and your workplace that will cut down on waste and greenhouse gas emissions (排放).

63. The passage mainly calls on people of _____ to join in the March 29th activity.

A. Sydney

B. Toronto

C. the world

D. the 17 cities

64. The Earth Hour movement mainly aims to get people to _______ to save our earth.

A. sense the danger

B. make a pledge

C. perform their duties

D. show their value

65. Which is implied in the passage that should not happen in our daily life?

A B

A. A Chance to Help Save the Earth

B. A Chance to Help Prevent Pollution

C. An Hour to Fight Against Bad Habits

D. An Hour to Keep Climate Unchanged

The teacher was leaving the village, and everybody seemed sorry. The miller at Cresscombe lent him the small cart and horse to carry his goods to Christminster, the city of his destination, such a vehicle proving of quite enough size for the teacher's belongings. For his only article, in addition to the packing-case of books, was a piano that he had bought when he thought of learning instrumental music. But the eagerness having faded he had never acquired any skill in playing, and the purchased article had been a permanent trouble to him.

The headmaster had gone away for the day, being a man who disliked the sight of changes. He did not mean to return till the evening, when the new teacher would have arrived, and everything would be smooth again.

The blacksmith, the farm bailiff and the teacher were standing in confused attitudes in the sitting room before the instrument. The teacher had remarked that even if he got it into the cart he should not know what to do with it on his arrival at Christminster, since he was only going into a temporary place just at first.

A little boy of eleven, who had been assisting in the packing, joined the group of men, and said, ‘Aunt has got a fuel-house, and it could be put there, perhaps, till you’ve found a place to settle in, sir.’

‘Good idea,’ said the blacksmith.

The smith and the bailiff started to see about the possibility of the suggested shelter, and the boy and the teacher were left standing alone.

‘Sorry I am going, Jude?’ asked the latter kindly.

Tears rose into the boy’s eyes. He admitted that he was sorry.

‘So am I,’ said Mr. Phillotson.

‘Why do you go, sir?’ asked the boy.

‘Well—don't speak of this everywhere. You know what a university is, and a university degree? It is the necessary hallmark (标志) of a man who wants to do anything in teaching. My scheme, or dream, is to be a university graduate. By going to live at Christminster, I shall be at headquarters,

so to speak, and if my scheme is practicable at all, I consider that being on the spot will afford me a better chance.’

The smith and his companion returned. Old Miss Fawley's fuel-house was practicable; and she seemed willing to give the instrument standing-room there. So it was left in the school till the evening, when more hands would be available for removing it; and the teacher gave a final glance round.

At nine o'clock Mr. Phillotson mounted beside his box of books, and waved his friends good-bye.

67. It seemed that the teacher _____.

A. was not getting on well with the headmaster

B. had lived a rather simple life in the village

C. was likely to continue to practice playing the piano

D. would get help in the city on arriving there

68. The motivation of the teacher’s moving lay in his _____.

A. ambition

B. devotion

C. admiration

D. inspiration

69. The boy named Jude may be described as _____.

A. polite, generous and cheerful

B. active, modest and friendly

C. kind, bright and helpful

D. calm, confident and humorous

70. In the passage the writer describes both the teac her’s _____.

A. love for music and his dislike for musical instruments

B. hard work in the village and his strong interest in city life

C. friendship with some villagers and also conflicts with others

D. eagerness to go to the city and his affection for the village

Possession of Private Guns in the United States

Christmas is approaching. But shooting massacres (残杀) cast a tragic shadow over the holiday season in the US.

On December 5, a gunman killed eight people, before taking his own life, at a shopping mall in Omaha, Nebraska. On December 9, five people, including the gunman, died in two attacks in Colorado.

While people are busy trying to discover the killers’motives (动机), another issue is causing heated debate in the country --- the weapon the killers used.

The US is one of just a few developed Western countries that allow private possession of guns. Any adult can buy army style weapons from a handgun to an AK-47.

“The right to own arms is a part of the Constitution (宪法). Many Americans believe it to be a fundamental freedom,”said Jonathan Haagen, who worked for Teens.

When the United States was still a group of colonies, they dealt with a lot of corruption (腐败) from the British. Therefore, American people considered it a great danger for the government to have control of all the weapons. Private gun ownership was important in their fight for freedom. However, with more and more killings in schools and shopping malls, lots of Americans argue that they should do away with the right to bear arms. But the National Rifle Association (NRA) said this position violates (违反) the Constitution.

The NRA is fond of saying it is not guns but people who kill. In some cases, this is true. But in many other cases, owning guns is what causes the murder. According to the US Department of Justice, more than 10,000 crimes a year are committed with guns.

Dear John,

I’d like to tell you about the discussion we’ve hust had. It’s about how to spend time outside school efficiently, since the authority of Jiangsu has required that senior middle school sutdents shouldn’t spend more than 8 hours a day studying at school.

Opinions are divided on the topic. Some of my classmates choose to read more in their spare time.

They think reading can enrich their knowledge and prepare them for their further studies.

Some prefer to make use of their spare time to surf the Internet. For one thing, they can collect necessary information on line. For another, they can share ideas with friends in every corner of the world.

Others love to spend their spare time taking exercise to strengthen their bodies, while still others would choose to do some part-time jobs. On the one hand, they can put themselves in touch with society. On the other hand, they can learn to be independent.

As far as I am concerned, I would …

Bye for now!

Yours sincerely,

Li Ming

W: That sounds fine.

W: I like classical music. Do you?

M: Well, you see, classical music always sends me to sleep.

M: What did I do wrong? Did I take a wrong turn?

W: I think so.

Text 5

M: Here is my CV. There’re three copies.

W: Have you brought your certificates as well?

W: Hi, John.

M: Oh! Hi, Laura. What are you doing here?

W: Uh, I’m usually here on weekends. It’s my dad’s shop. So are you looking for a bike?

M: Yeah. Now that the weather is warming up, I think I’ll get some exercise instead of taking the bus all the time.

W: Well, you came to the right place. Do you know what you would like?

M: Er, I don’t want a racer or a touring bike or anything. Mostly I’ll just be using it to get me back and forth from work.

W: How far is that?

M: About four miles.

W: Are there a lot of hills on the way?

M: Some I guess. But maybe I should tell you that I’ve only got 150 dollars. Can I get anything decent for that?

W: Well, you are not going to get anything top of the line. But we do have a few trade-ins in the back that are in good condition.

M: That sounds good.

Text 7

M: Was the telephone ringing?

W: I didn’t hear anything.

M: I thought I heard it ring two or three times.

W: Sometimes when the windows are open, you can hear the neighbors’ phone.

M: Well, I’m expecting an important phone call, and I don’t want to miss it.

W: Is it anything I should know about?

M: Not really. It has something to do with work and doesn’t really affect us here at home.

W: Well, why don’t you go ahead and do what you wanted to do outside? I’ll call you if the phone rings for you.

M: Thanks. I think I will. I’ve been waiting so long and now I’m getting nervous. I need to relax outdoors.

M: Well, Cynthia, our first term at university is almost over. I can’t wait for the holi days.

W: Me, too, Edward! Why don’t we go somewhere far away and forget about lectures and essays and all that hard work?

M: Sounds good to me. Now, how long will the holidays last?

W: About six weeks, I think.

M: How about going to the coast? It would be great to do some swimming and surfing.

W: The coast would be good, but are there any other choices? There are the mountains. They’re nice and cool at this time of year. And we can do some bush-walking. There’s also the desert, which I really enjoyed last year.

M: What about going to Sydney? I’ve never been there and they say it’s a great city to visit. Lots

of things to do there, I’ve heard.

W: I agree. Sydney would be good but now there are too many tourists there. And I’d rather get away from buildings and cars. There are enough of those around here. I vote for the mountains.

M: All right, then, let’s do that. Now let’s find out where we’re going to stay and how we’re going to get there.

Text 9

M: What’s on TV this evening? I feel like relaxing.

W: Why ask me that? You know I never watch it.

M: Too busy with the latest hobby, are you? What is it this time, collecting stamps or buttons? I wish I had as much free time as you do.

W: As a matter of fact, you probably have more than I do. But you waste it all watching TV.

M: That’s not a waste of time. I’ve got to rest sometimes.

W: Sometimes, maybe, but not all the time. And anyway, I relax with my hobbies. A change is as good as a rest.

M: Well, TV’s my hobby, and I learn a lot from it. There are lo ts of educational programmes.

W: But you don’t watch them, do you? Whenever an educational programme comes on, you either switch over to the other channel or go to sleep.

M: When I come home from work, I need to put my feet up, at least for a while. Life’s not all work, you know.

W: Hobbies aren’t work, Jeff. I like putting my feet up, too, but I like doing things while I rest. Life’s too short for us to waste time.

M: Mary dear, as I’ve said many times, we’re different. There are two kinds of people i n the world. . .

Text 10

Now let me tell you about myself. Ten years ago I used to be very fit. I cycled to work and I got a lot of exercise at the weekends. I used to play tennis a lot and go for long walks. In those days I had a job in an office. It was n’t a very good job but I had a lot of time to do the things I enjoyed doing.

Then, about eight years ago, I got a much better job. The pay was better. But the hours were a lot longer, too. I bought a car and drove to work every day. I stopped playing tennis and going for long walks at the weekend because I just didn’t have any time for things like that any more. And I began to put on weight.

There’s a lot of stress in a job like mine. Perhaps that’s why I started drinking more than I used to. For example, I used to have only half a glass of whisky when I got home, then I started filling the glass to the top. I started smoking a lot, too. I never used to smoke at all.

Two months ago I had a heart attack. At first I just couldn’t believe it. Luckily it wasn’t very serious. The doctor advised me to stop smoking and to eat less. He told me to do a lot of other

things, too. But I don’t see how I can do some of them and keep my job. For example, he advised me to work less, and get more exercise. But I j ust haven’t any time! My job takes everything out of me!
