Are you brave enough?4 cruises for adventure

Some adventure travel types may laugh at the idea of getting on a cruise ship, thinking of it as being too usual. They should get over that. There are places in the world that are best seen and experienced on water, including new destinations. Check out our picks for the 4 best adventure cruises.

Antarctica and the South Shetland Islands: Icebergs, glaciers (冰川), whales, penguins and elephant seals are the big draws to the “Great White Continent.” In this destination list, you'll dress a heavy jacket for tours exploring the cold, bare landscape, blue-lighted icebergs and other sights. Upscale French line Ponant Cruises' 264-passenger ships cruise the region late November through January.

The Galapagos: Nature rules over these islands, about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, and local creatures are surprisingly unafraid of humans. You may find yourself stepping over sea lions to cross a beach, eye-to-eye with a blue-footed bird, diving with young sea lions and getting very close to a curious iguana (鬣晰). The 92-passenger Celebrity Xpedition cruises the islands year-round.

Alaska:Seeing a glacier break brings high drama. On small ship line Alaskan Dream Cruises you'll also communicate with bald eagles and seals as you quietly paddle in a remote bay. Travel routes avoid the tourist spots in favor of a Southeast Alaska wild experience — you're more likely to see a leaping whale than a jewelry store. The line's ships carry fewer than 60 passengers on spring and summer cruises.

The Arctic:Come for the polar bears that rule the North Pole, but stay for the astonishing event of the Midnight Sun, plus the sights of glaciers, icebergs and surprising areas of wildflowers. Keep your telescope balanced to spot elephant seals, white whales, bearded seals, rare birds and arctic deer in an extremely beautiful landscape. Hurtigruten's 318-passenger polar discovery ship MS Fram sails here June to August.

The roots of basketball are deep in Canada. In 1891 the game was invented by Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian who was from Almonte, Ontario.

Having been given the task of creating a new indoor sports activity while conducting a physical education class at the international YMCA training school in Springfield, Massachusetts, Naismith designed what we now call basketball. The original game involved 13 rules and a peach basket hung ten feet above the floor. Even though it took place in the United States, at least ten of the players who located in the first game were university students from Quebec.

Basketball played by school and local amateur teams has been part of the Canadian sports scene since the turn of the century. Hoops teams representing Canada have joined in Olympic Games since 1936 and in the World Championships since 1954.

One of the most storied amateur teams in Canadian basketball history is the Edmonton Commercial Graduates (Grad's), a group of Canadian women who dominated (占优势) the sport in the 1920s, 30s and 40s. Over 25 years, the Grad's played 522 games at home and abroad, against both women's and men's teams. The Grad's accomplished a record-breaking winning streak (连胜场数) of 147 games and throughout their basketball tenure (任期) won remarkable (卓越的) 502 times.

The National Basketball Association also has origins in Canada. The NBA's first game was played in Toronto nearly seventy years ago, on November 1, 1946 when the New York Knickerbockers defeated the Toronto Huskies 68-66 at Maple Leaf Gardens. The teams were part of the Basketball Association of America, the forerunner to the NBA.

The Toronto Raptors and Vancouver Grizzlies joined the NBA beginning in the 1995-96 season, becoming the first non-U.S. cities to join the league since the Toronto Huskies were one-year members of the BAA. In summer 2001, the Grizzlies relocated from Vancouver to Memphis, Tennessee.

C

My grandfather Andy Anderson is 99. His life story is one for the big screen —he met my grandmother on a Saturday, and they married on the following Saturday. They stayed together until my grandma died 67 years later.

Without going to college, Andy worked his way to the top. He became the manager of the dairy department of Safeway. He earned the nickname Mr. Cheese, which eventually turned into Grandpa Cheese among the family. He has taught me a lot and here's what he has learned in his 99 years.

Always maintain a good sense of humor. Find something humorous in every single situation. Never be too good to start at the bottom. Exercise every day, even when you don't feel like it. Don't spend more money than you make. Save your money now and spend it later.

You must be able to forgive, even if it's difficult to do. Love is not always easy; sometimes you have to work at it. Your family is the most precious thing you will ever have in life.

If you're faced with a problem, don't delay trying to figure it out. But if there's no way to figure it out, you have to forget about it. Make sure you're doing what you love; don't be afraid to follow those dreams you have for yourself.

School education is important, but not necessary. Life can be an education in itself. Explore your world and stay curious; Having a bad job is better than having no job at all; Try not to take yourself so seriously. Don't ever be afraid to be your true self. Your life is delicate, and if you fail to take care of yourself properly, you'll spoil.

Life is a gift that you must unwrap (打开). It's up to you to determine if what's inside will lead you to happiness or dismay (沮丧). You have the power to make that decision for yourself.

All of above come from Grandpa Cheese. If you're wondering what Grandpa Cheese is up to these days, he's riding his motorized scooter (踏板车) around Benicia, CA, and “planning on what I'm going to do when I start to get old,” he says.

8.Which of the following agrees with Grandpa's philosophy?

A.Love needs efforts.

B.Exercise if you like it.

C.Happiness makes longer life.

D.A good job secures a happy life.

9.If you have a problem with no solution, the best way is to ________.

A.keep trying

B.leave it aside

C.take care of yourself

D.have a sense of humor

10.What can we learn from the passage?

A.The author's great-grandparents are living a happy life now.

B.School education helps develop curiosity about the world.

C.Whether life will be happy or miserable is decided by yourself.

D.Andy was called Mr. Cheese before being a Safeway manager.

11.Where does the passage probably come from?

A.An advertisement.

B.A biography.

C.A political newspaper.

D.A science fiction.

As sea levels climb, even Washington, D.C. could see more frequent and widespread flooding at high tide (潮汐).

Strong storms and high winds sometimes bring floods to coastal areas. But cities and towns along the US East Coast are flooding even in calm and sunny weather. Among them is Maryland's capital Annapolis. Tourists there must sometimes walk through water flooding downtown streets surrounding the harbor. Sometimes, water covers roads in Atlantic City, N.J. Even the yards and basements of coastal homes near New York City sometimes flood.

All are suffering from this trend — normal high tides surpass (超过) a rising sea level.

Sea levels have climbed, on average, about 20 centimeters (8 inches) over the past 135 years. And a sharp increase in tidal flooding is one of the more visible impacts affecting many coastal areas, notes William Sweet, an oceanographer (海洋学家).

Sweet and his co-workers recently analyzed data from 45 tide gauges (计量表) along the US coasts. These tools record the changing heights of tides as they rise and fall. From these data, Sweet's team calculated the number of “troublesome floods” in various coastal cities. These floods, Sweet exp lains, typically occur when water level is about 30 centimeters (1 foot) above the historic level of the highest high tides. In June 2014, the team reported finding a growing rise in these flooding events.

In Charleston, S.C., from 1957 to 1963, the city experienced troublesome floods an average of 4.6 days per year. But from 2007 to 2013, the occurring rate of troublesome floods jumped five times. Annapolis city was even more serious. From 1957 to 1963, troublesome floods were roughly 3.8 days per year. From 2007 to 2013, the average was 10 times higher — 39.3 days a year.

“Over the next few decades, climate change probably drives sea levels even higher,” Sweet says. “So today's flooding problems promise to become only more widespread and frequent.”

12.Paragraph 2 is mainly developed by ________.

A.time B.space

C.characters D.examples

13.According to data in Paragraph 5, it can be inferred that ________.

A.the changes of heights of tides are usually in a small range

B.the number of troublesome floods gradually gets less

C.there has been a growing rise in these analyzed flooding events

D.the floods in coastal cities often occur when water level is above 1 foot

14.The ultimate cause of more flooding problems is the fact that ________.

A.the sea levels have been climbing

B.the weather conditions are not stable

C.climate has changed over the years

D.people are living too close to harbors

15.What is the text mainly about?

A.A flood research.

B.Sweet's team.

C.American oceanographers.

D.The US East Coast.

Independence days around the world

Order and progress in Brazil

In one of the most peaceful Latin American revolutions, Brazil won its freedom after Portuguese prince Dom Pedro Ⅰ declared it independent of his father's rule on September 7th, 1822.

Pakistani pride

A boldly painted youth cheers for independence in front of the national flag in Wagah, a Pakistani town near India. Indonesian determination

The ProclamationofIndonesianIndependence on August 17th, 1945 threw the country into four years of war with the Netherlands, which Indonesia won in 1949. Celebratory customs include the release of hundreds of green turtles (海龟) into the ocean from Bali's Kuta Beach, and panjat pinang, a game in which a pole is set up, covered with oily clay (黏土) and hung with bicycles, televisions and other prizes. Whoever climbs all the way to the top wins, though people often work together to split the prize.

Whimsical skies in Colombia

After protesters took to Bogota's streets on July 20th, 1810, the Spanish governor acknowledged a limited independence that eventually gave way to full sovereignty (主权) in 1819. Colourful hot air balloon shows have previously been in honor of Colombia's quest for freedom, and folk dancing, flag raising ceremonies and traditional food such as corn cakes are also staples (主要内容) of the day.

I was very excited on the first day of high school! I had P.E. for the first period. We hurriedly gathered in the locker room (衣帽间) when the headmaster began to speak, “Good morning, boys and girls! Welcome to the first day of the great new school year. We will begin with the pledge (誓言) of loyalty.”

I pulled my shirt over my head and my right hand immediately rested over my heart. A few tears came to my eyes as every time I pledged. I thought of my grandpa. He had died almost a year before, but I still missed him every day. Grandpa served in World WarⅡ and the flag had a very special meaning for him.

The next morning in the locker room, I noticed something strange. Some girls talked through the pledge. In the morning after that, even fewer did the pledge, including the teachers. By the second week of school, I was the only girl in the whole locker room that did the pledge.

The next morning, I hid in the bathroom to change clothes and pledge. There I couldn't see the flag and felt guilty to be hiding like that. I kept hiding for the next week and felt worse.

I spent a weekend gathering up my nerve. On Monday, I changed into my gym clothes right away and was standing by my locker when the headmaster began morning announcements. The pledge started and I put my hand over my heart.

A girl nearby locked her locker and asked, “Why are you doing that?” She look ed confused.

“My grandpa fought in World War Ⅱ and he died last year,” I said. “I'm doing it for him.”

A delightful-looking robot called MEDi, or Medicine and Engineering Designing Intelligence, is being used to help make doctors' visits less painful.

The Alberta Children's Hospital in Canada purchased four of the MEDi robots earlier this year. The bionic (仿生学的) friends hang out with children in the waiting room and also accompany them during different procedures, according to RxRobots, the group that created MEDi. The MEDi's purpose is to help children cope with pain and reduce their stress. The robots have produced real results. According to a study done at the hospital, kids who interact with a MEDi robot reportedly experience 50 percent less pain during medical procedures than those who do not. “Parents told us that when they left the hospital, their children said almost nothing about the needle and told everyone about the robot,” Tanya Beran, founder and chief scientific officer at RxRobots, told CNBC of MEDi's success at the children's hospital.

The two-foot-tall robots can relieve patients' anxiety by telling stories or playing games with the kids. MEDi robots are also programmed to speak several different languages, and are equipped with facial recognition capabilities (能力). The robots can interact with the children during various types of procedures like blood tests. Not only do the robots comfort the children, but they also make the kids more willing to work with medical staff.

“Our research shows that when children interact with MEDi robots, they are more cooperative in the procedure,” Beran said. “This means that the procedure is completed more quickly, resulting in greater health care efficiency (效率).” Beran said that MEDi robots are also a hit with parents. “Knowing that there is something out there that eases the stress, anxiety and sometimes traumatic (创伤的) experiences, is great,” Sheila Sousa, the mother of an 8-year-old patient said.

8.MEDi robots are mainly used to ________.

A.help foreign patients communicate with doctors

B.assist doctors in completing medical procedures

C.take kids to the hospital if their parents are busy

D.make kids feel less pain during medical procedures

9.The underlined word “relieve” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.

C.can recognize faces

D.can only speak English

George Harrison, one member of the Beatles, reached No. 1 with a song, MySweetLord. But his sweet time at the top was short-lived. Within a month, a lawsuit was filed (提出诉讼). Harrison's song shared a melody (曲子) with the 1963 hit song by the Chiffons, He'sSoFine. Judge Richard Owen ruled that Harrison was guilty. But he said Harrison's theft wasn't intentional; it was accidental.

Psychologist Dan Gilbert calls this kleptomnesia: generating (产生) an idea that you believe is new, but in fact is created by someone else. It's accidental plagiarism (剽窃), and it's all too common in creative work. Psychologists Alan Brown and Dana Murphy invited people to brainstorm in groups of four. They took turns generating lists of sports, clothes or four-legged animals. Next, the participants were asked to write down the four ideas that they personally generated for each category. Alarmingly, a full 75 percent of participants unintentionally plagiarized, claiming they generated an idea that was in fact offered by another member of their group. And later, the participants wrote down four new ideas for each category. The majority wrote down at least one idea that had already been generated by another group member —usually the group member who had generated ideas immediately before them.

Kleptomnesia happens due to a feature of how people's memory is connected. When we get information, we tend to pay more attention to the content than the source. Once we accept a piece of information as true, we no longer need to worry about where we acquired it. It's especially difficult to remember the source of information when we're busy or working on a complex task. And the more our attention is divided, the less we notice who is responsible for the ideas that get raised.

12.Who was charged with plagiarism?

A.Dan Gilbert. B.George Harrison.

C.Alan Brown D.Richard Owen.

13.We can learn from Paragraph 2 that ________.

A.people plagiarize unintentionally very often

B.kleptomnesia is not common in creative work

C.accidental plagiarism is acceptable in creative work

D.kleptomnesia can be regarded as intentional plagiarism

14.Kleptomnesia happens because people ________.

A.make the most of the feature of their memory

B.focus less on the source than the content

D.worry about the reality of information

15.The author's purpose of writing the passage is to ________.

Why People Who Take Notes All the Time Are

More Likely to Be Successful

Note-taking is an essential skill in many areas of work and study. But is note-taking really useful in helping

us to understand, remember, and retrieve (重新获得) essential points when we most need them? 16.________ Here are four reasons note-takers are on the fast track to success:

17.________ The action of writing information down is a great way to get fully involved in the learning process. Note-takers are much more actively involved because they are processing the information and getting the essential facts down.

They understand the importance of remembering the information. Students need to remember all relevant information when faced with an exam question. A speaker may not have their notes at hand but will still have a better chance of actually remembering the facts if they have spared the time to prepare notes. 18.________ Howe in 1970 found that students who had taken notes were seven times more likely to remember facts a week later than those who had not.

They do not rely on getting others' notes. Lots of students love asking the lecturers for a copy of their notes and with PowerPoint and other software, this can be easily done. 19.________ These students are not going to be very successful in school if they do this all the time.

They know that taking notes helps them achieve their goals. 20.________ There are quite a few studies not showing that the actual process of taking notes helps people to boost (推进) their learning and also achieve their goals. Researchers at the Dominican University of California have discovered that writing down goals and sharing them are crucial (至关重要的) in helping people to achieve their aims.

A.Research backs this up.

B.They are actively learning.

C.This is no accident or coincidence.

D.They know how to prepare for note-taking.

E.But the results for the students are not very good.

F.Naturally, it does depend a lot on the subject matter.

人教版新课标高中英语选修7课文原文

人教版新课标高中英语选修7课文原文 Unit 1 Living well-Reading MARTY’S STORY Hi, my name is Marry Fielding and I guess you could say that I am "one in a million". In other words, there are not many people like me. You see, I have a muscle disease which makes me very weak, so I can't run or climb stairs as quickly as other people. In addition, sometimes I am very clumsy and drop things or bump into furniture. Unfortunately, the doctors don't know how to make me better, but I am very outgoing and have learned to adapt to my disability. My motto is: live One day at a time. Until I was ten years old I was the same as everyone else. I used to climb trees, swim and play football. In fact, I used to dream about playing professional football and possibly representing my country in the World Cup. Then I started to get weaker and weaker, until I could only enjoy football from a bench at the stadium. In the end I went into hospital for medical tests. I stayed there for nearly three months. I think I had at least a billion tests, including one in which they cut out a piece of muscle from my leg and looked at it under a microscope. Even after all that, no one could give my disease a name and it is difficult to know what the future holds. One problem is that I don't look any different from other people. So sometimes some children in my primary school would laugh, when I got out of breath after running a short way or had to stop and rest halfway up the stairs. Sometimes, too, I was too weak to go to school so my education suffered. Every time I returned after an absence, I felt stupid because I was behind the others. My life is a lot easier at high school because my fellow students have accepted me. The few who cannot see the real person inside my body do not make me annoyed, and I just ignore them. All in all I have a good life. I am happy to have found many things I can do, like writing and computer programming. My ambition is to work for a firm that develops computer software when I grow up. Last year invented a computer football game and a big company has decided to buy it from me. I have a very busy life with no time to sit around feeling sorry for myself. As well as going to the movies and football matches with my friends, I spend a lot of time with my pets. I have two rabbits, a parrot, a tank full of fish and a tortoise. To look after my pets properly takes a lot of time but I find it worthwhile. I also have to do a lot of work, especially if I have been away for a while. In many ways my disability has helped me grow stronger psychologically and become more independent. I have to work hard to live a normal life but it has been worth it. If I had a chance to say one thing to healthy children, it would be this: having a disability does not mean your life is not satisfying. So don't feel sorry for the disabled or make fun of them, and don't ignore them either. Just accept them for who they are, and give them encouragement to live as
