Beijing-Shanghai Railway was completed in 1968. The line runs 1,462 km between China's two main cities and passes through five provinces and the city of Tianjin.

Since opening, it has been one of the busiest routes in our country. The Beijing-Shanghai route is now served by 10 trains a day, five of which are

non-stop. The journey time is just under 12 hours.

Now trains are allowed to travel at 250 kph ( kilometers per hour) and the journey time is only 10 hours.

With the sixth railway speedup, China has joined the ranks of countries with high-speed rail services. Trains are able to run at speeds of 200 kph on some 6,003 km of track, and on some sections, the highest speed can increase to 250 kph. The 6,003 km of track serves both high-speed passenger trains and low-speed cargo trains.

Railway operators have to deal with the problem of the speed gap between the two kinds of trains to make sure they both run safely.

Once upon a time there lived a poor farmer called Smith. He didn't like to share things with others. Smith had a friend who was famous for the wonderful apples he grew.

One day, his friend gave Smith a young apple tree and told him to take it home and planted. The farmer was pleased with the gift, but when he got home, he did not know where to plant He thought and thought. Finally at night he planted the tree in his wood where no one could see it. But without sunlight and good soil, the tree soon died.

Later the friend asked the farmer why he had planted the tree in such a poor place.

"What's the difference?" the farmer said angrily. "If I had planted it near the road, strangers would have stolen the fruit. If I had planted it in one of my fields, my neighbors would have come at night and stolen some of the apples. If I had planted it near my house, my own children would have taken the fruit,"

"Yes," said the friend, "but at least someone could have enjoyed the fruit. Now you not only have got nothing, but also you have destroyed a good apple tree."

WHETHER you like it or not, your parents are responsible (负责任的) for you, at least until you?re out of high school. But does it feel like your parents are stressing you out with their love? Do you often fight with them?

Hu Muqing, 16, of Shenyang, complains that his parents are only concerned (关心) about his grades and not his other needs. He and his parents fight the most about the time he spends watching TV and on the Internet.

“They think because I?m in high school I should concentrate on my work,” the Shenyang teenager said.

“However, I need to be able to relax. Most of my friends can watch TV and surf the Web a lot. Sometimes it?s hard to talk to them.”

After some negotiations (商谈), Hu has been allowed to watch TV for 15 to 20 minutes every night, but has been told to keep away from the computer. Since she feels she?s grown up now, Shen Ying, 17, wants more respect from her parents.

“My father yells (大叫) at me when he?s in a bad mood (情绪). He doesn?t listen to me, but instead acts like, …I?m the boss?!” said the teenager from Jianyang, Sichuan province. “I?d like my parents to treat me like a friend and understand that respect is a two-way street.”

Lu Yiting, 15, of Shantou, has a different problem with her parents. They think she spends too much time with her friends and is falling into bad company.

“I want trust from my parents,” Lu said.

It?s the age when teenagers are becoming more independent (独立的). But their parents are very concerned about their kids? futures, said Sun Yunxiao, a senior researcher at the China Youth and Children Research Center.

Sun suggests that teenagers should learn to communicate with their parents effectively (有效地).

“Find the right time for a talk. On Mother?s Day or Father?s Day, say …Thank you? to your parents or give them a small gift with a letter so they can get inside your head a little,” he advised.

Sun also believes that teenagers have to work to earn trust and respect from their parents.

“You need to make sure they know that you?re not going to screw up (搞砸) your exams or let them down. Let them know that you want to do well, and that you will do well,” he said.

Sun

Sun

It was not until in my late thirties that I made this important discovery: giving-away makes life so much more exciting. You need not worry if you lack money. This is how I experimented with giving-away. If an idea for improving the window display of a neighborhood store flashes to me, I step in and make the suggestion to the storekeeper. One discovery I made about giving-away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in an unexpected form. One Sunday morning the local post office delivered an important special delivery letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my office. I wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation. More than a year later I needed a post-office box for a new business I was starting. I was told at the window that there were no boxes left, and that my name would have to go on a long waiting list. As I was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway. He had overheard our conversation. “Wasn’t it you that wrote us that letter a year ago about delivering a special delivery to your home?” I said yes. “Well, you certainly are going to have a box in this post office if we have to make one for you. You don’t know what a letter like that means to us. We usually get nothing but complaints.”

human creations, language may be the most remarkable. Through language we share experience, values, exchange ideas, transmit knowledge, and sustain culture. Indeed, language is vital to sense of reality by giving meaning to events. Good speakers have respect for language and know how it works. Words are the tools of a speaker?s craft. They have special uses, just like the tools of any other profession. As a speaker, you should be aware of the meaning of words and know how to use language accurately, clearly, vividly, and appropriately. Using language accurately is as vital to a speaker as using numbers accurately to a accountant. Never use a word unless you are sure of its meaning. If you are not sure, look up the word in the dictionary. As you prepare your speeches, ask yourself constantly, “What do I really want to say? What do I really mean?” Choose words that are precise and accurate. Using language clearly allows listeners to grasp your meaning immediately. You can ensure this [by using familiar words (that are known to the average person and require no specialized background); by choosing concrete words in preference to more abstract ones, and by eliminating verbal clutter]. Using language vividly helps bring your speech to life. One way (to make your speech vivid)|is through imagery,or the creation of word pictures. You can develop imagery by using concrete language, simile, and metaphor. Simile is an explicit comparison between things (that are essentially different yet have something in common); it always contains the words “like”or “as”. Metaphor is an impli cit comparison between things that are different yet have something in common; it does not contain the words “like” or “as”. Another way to make your speeches vivid is by exploiting the rhythm of language. Four devices for creating rhythm are parallelism, repetition, alliteration, and antithesis. Parallelism is the similar arrangement of a pair or series of related words, phrases, or sentences. Repetition is the use of the same word or set of words at the beginning or end of successive clauses or sentences. Alliteration comes from repeating the initial constant sounds of close or adjoining words. Antithesis is the juxtaposition of
