A

The Flying Eye Hospital

At the airport stands a DC-10 aeroplane. From time to time people are taken on board the plane. They are not passengers. And the aircraft is not going anywhere. These people are blind and they are going to have an operation to restore their sight.

The aeroplane is a flying eye hospital that belongs to a medical charity ORBIS. This organization was established by an American eye doctor called David Paton in 1982. Dr Paton wanted to treat people who were blind in poor countries. He realized that it would be very expensive to set up permanent hospitals in every poor country. So he decided to create a mobile hospital which could go to the places where blind people were most in need of eye doctors.

Much of the blindness in poor countries is caused by poor treatment, bad hygiene and lack of medical skills amongst local doctors. In many cases the blindness is easily preventable with proper knowledge and skills.

To date ORBIS has carried out almost 300 medical programmes in over 70 countries and restored the sight of 20,000 people. OPBIS has also trained many local doctors and nurses in the skills needed to give blind people back their sight.

The ORBIS team consists of five doctors and six nurses drawn from a group of 600 volunteer eye specialists in 30 countries. For each programme the ORBIS team flies to an area where blindness is a major problem. The team stays in the area for three weeks operating on patients and training local doctors.

The flying eye hospital has a large operating room, a laser treatment room and an audio-visual center. as the eye specialists perform their operations in the operating room, the local doctors can watch the surgery and learn through the two-way audio-visual system.

ORBIS is not connected with any country. The United Nations has praised ORBIS as a model

organization that goes beyond political, religious and cultural differences. ORBIS is expensive to run, however. It receives money from private donations and other charities to meet its annual US$80 million budget.

OEBIS is a great success. It continues to fight against the tragedy of blindness wherever it is found throughout the world.
