美国口语常用I'm gonna (=going to)及I wanna (=want to) 的省略形;听起来虽有亲切感,但应避免在正式的场合中使用.
curfew 是指"关门"之意. "我赶不上(宿舍等的)关门时间"是
I'm not gonna make (it for) the curfew.
2. Those people hanging out next door are so noisy.
经常聚集在隔壁的那些人吵闹的很. hang out 是"经常聚集", 等于hang around.
"经常流连的场所(名词)" 拼为hangout. This coffee shop is our favorite hangout.

shoot (=****) 是"狗屎,胡说"之意;
****一词最好少用,shoot尚可. service是指"公共事业".

bum是"敲竹杠,乞讨",含有"有借无还"的意思,

compost heap 是"肥堆",用作"恶臭"之意.
"垃圾"一般称为trash(英国人称为rubbish),

kill除了有"杀死"的意思以外,还有许多不同的意思.

dry 是"弄干"之意. "用毛巾擦干"是towel oneself, "用力擦干"就用 towel away.

第9卷第1期2008年3月 江 苏 工 业 学 院 学 报 JOU RNA L OF JIA NGSU POL YT ECHNIC U NIV ERSIT Y V ol.9N o.1 M ar.2008广告英语中双关语的翻译 王春燕 (江苏工业学院外国语学院,江苏常州213164) 摘 要:双关语的可译性一直是翻译界争论的热点。语言、文化及表达习惯的差异,使双关语翻译难以兼顾其双重含义。“功能对等”理论以译语读者为中心,注重译文在译语语言和文化环境中所预期达到的功能,为双关语的翻译另辟蹊径。对英语广告中双关语的翻译来说,译文只要能产生与原文相似的广告效应,能使译文读者获得与原文读者近乎相同的感受就是成功的翻译。关键词:英语广告;双关语;翻译;功能对等 中图分类号:H315.9 文献标识码:A 文章编号:1672-9048(2008)01-0106-03 广告语言是一种精炼、含蓄、富有表现力和鼓动性的语言。“英美现代广告学认为广告的作用在于:Info rmation(提供信息)、Per suasion(争取顾客)、Maintenance of Demand(保持需求)、Creating M ain Mar kets(扩大市场)以及Quality(确保质量)”。[1]当今的广告是市场激烈竞争与设计者独具匠心、精雕细琢的产物。为增强语言的感召力(Appeal),广告英语着重修辞,双关语就是广告创作中常用的修辞手段之一。双关语是利用语音或语义条件,有意使某些词语或句子在特定的语言环境中构成双重意义的一种修辞方式,即表面上是一种意思,实际上又是一种意思,既引人注意,又能引起联想。双关语可以使语言简洁凝练、幽默含蓄、新颖别致、耐人寻味,因此这一修辞手法在广告创作中得到了广泛的应用。 一、双关语在广告中的运用 双关语是语言修辞的一种常见形式:巧妙地利用同音译异义或同形异义现象使一个词语或句子具有两种不同的含意,不直接表露,显得含蓄委婉,而又十分幽默新奇。[2]英语双关一般可分语音双关(homo phone)和语义双关(homog raph)。 语音双关即指谐音双关,是将两个拼写语义不同但读音相同或相近的词语(同音或近音异形异义词)天衣无缝地安排在句子中而产生的双关。此类双关具有风趣、幽默、俏皮、滑稽的语言风格,能增强广告的感染力,给广告受者留下深刻的印象。例:M or e sun and air for your son and heir。[3]139这是一则海滨浴场的宣传广告,其目的是吸引度假者全家老少都到海滨浴场来,制作者巧妙运用了同音异义词,即sun和son,air和heir这两对谐音词,说起来琅琅上口,和谐悦耳,极易打动父母的爱子之心。 语义双关是利用语言中的一词多义的特点(同形异义或一词多义),使词语或句子在特定环境下形成的双关,语义双关是言在此而义在彼,造成一种含蓄、委婉、耐人寻味的意境增强语言的表达效果,激发消费者的好奇心,从而产生购买欲望。这种双关在广告中运用得也非常广泛,它与谐音双关有异曲同工之妙。由于双关语的特殊性,它经常被用来引起幽默的效果,在广告、笑话、谜语和一些需要回避话锋的场合通常会较多地使用双关语以使人加深印象或化解尴尬。例:Spoil yourself and no t your figure。[4]这是Weight-Watcher减肥冰淇淋的广告。标题中“spoil”为双关所在。“spoil oneself”意为“尽兴”;“spo il one's fig ure”则为“破坏体形”。这则广告一语双关,使减肥者在轻松幽默的气氛中乐于接受该广告并产生购买欲望。 二、双关语的可译性 可译性一直是翻译研究领域中一个长期争论不休的问题:有无可译性?可译度有多大等?成了一个永恒的话题。在翻译时如果追求绝对地等值,双关语显然是不可译论者的首选例子。然而,由于每 收稿日期:2007-10-03 作者简介:王春燕(1972-),女,甘肃民勤人,硕士,讲师,主要从事翻译实践与理论研究。
