In a growing number of English classes, teachers are leaving the classic novels on the shelf and letting students select the books they read. Supporters say that the new approach, called readers’ workshop, helps develop a love for reading in students who are bored by classic literature. Donald thinks that we should turn the page. Students should be allowed to select the books they read in English class. He says he and his classmates are allowed to pick their own books in class. That makes them more focused, and they look forward to class time. Tristin, a classmate of his at Clinton Middle School agrees. “I’m reading books that I want to read, which makes class more fun and interesting,” he says. Offering students a choice may also improve test scores. Studies by Professor John Guthrie of the University of Maryland found that students in Grades 4 through 6 who had some choices in the books they read showed improved reading comprehension skills during testing. Giving students the chance to decide what they read helps build a lifelong love for reading. Isn’t that what we want for our students?

Sarah holds a different view. She thinks teachers know more about books than students do. When an English teacher assigns a book, he or she keeps in mind the reading level of most students in the class. Students who choose their own books might be cheating themselves by picking books that are not up to their reading level or that are too difficult. Furthermore, a whole class can discuss a book it reads together. That makes it easier for some kids to understand what they are reading. “The students wouldn’t be able to hold a meaningful conversation if they were all reading

In many societies, there is often greater acceptance of light skin than dark skin. Light skin may be seen as a mark of beauty, intelligence and success. These beliefs can lead to social pressures even within the same racial or ethnic group, if some members are darker skinned than others.

The result is that skin lightening has become a common activity across Africa, Asia and other areas of the world. More and more people with dark skin are using skin-lightening products, even if it means they may face health risks. They believe that having whiter skin will improve their lives. Many people think they will have a better chance of getting a job or marrying into a better family. Or they want to look like what their society generally considers beautiful.

Some beauty care products and soaps contain chemicals that make skin lighter. This process is also called bleaching. But some of the chemicals are extremely dangerous. One of the most dangerous is hydroquinone (对苯二酚).Hydroquinone has been banned in several countries. This chemical has been linked to kidney(肾) damage and some kinds of cancer. It also causes low birth weight in babies when mothers use it during pregnancy. At first,, bleaching products make the skin color lighter. But after long-term use they can cause problems. They could even make some skin darker. The chemicals in the products block, and break down the natural process that gives color to skin. The skin loses its natural barrier to protect against sunlight. Then the skin can become thick and discolored. Usually the person will use more of the product in an effort to correct the problem, but this only makes it worse.

Fatimata Ly treats skin conditions in the Senegalese capital, Dakar. Doctor Ly says skin bleaching has become a problem throughout Senegal. She says the

chemicals are now more dangerous because they are stronger. Some cases have resulted in blackened fingernails, infections and permanent skin damage.

And these are not the only risks. Experts say some people who change their skin color suffer emotional damage. They feel regret and sadness. They feel that instead of risking their health, they should have learned to love and accept their skin color as it was.

Everybody knows how important exercise and proper nutrition are to our everyday lives not only to make us have a good figure but also to keep us healthy in order to enjoy our lives with our loved ones. I was once told by a friend of mine who is a personal trainer that everyone needs to exercise for 45 minutes to an hour daily in order to lose weight that they have gained. But if we don’t have that much time to commit to exercise either because of school, work or a busy family life, what can we do to make sure that we are still getting enough exercise? If you are wondering about this, keep reading and hopefully the following advice will help you just like it helped me.

One important fact that we have to keep in mind when we are going through our

busy lives is to keep moving even if it means that we have to use a cordless(无线

的)phone or a cellphone versus a corded phone and walking while talking so as to get some exercise. While shopping, it is convenient to park close to the store entrance but choosing a place that is some distance from it will allow us to exercise and taking the stairs instead of the lift is also a good way to exercise that will help keep us healthy. These are very small adjustments that we can make in our daily lives but they add up and they only take a few minutes.

These types of activities might seem not to be helpful but in the long run these little but helpful exercise routines add up and help to keep us in shape and feeling our best physically and emotionally. Personally when I’m in a stressful situation, going for a short walk and enjoying the fresh air and scenery will benefit me a lot.

There are many types of exercises that can be done in the house and working out doesn’t necessarily mean having to join an expensive membership program and working out at the local gym. Doing free weights in the house, stretching(伸展)and going for a short walk or a jog are some simple things that can be done for a few minutes a day that will not cost anything. Breaking up the exercise program into small parts will manage our time during our busy days and will also help keep our confidence level at its peak and encourage us to exercise as we can see the results in a short amount of time.
