Questions 61 to 65 are based on the same passage or dialog.

Time limitation: 4 minutes and 36 seconds

If you ran into SmarterChild online, you would be surprised at this kid's huge memory. For example, SmarterChild knows every baseball player in every team this season. He knows every word in the dictionary and the weather in every major city across the United States.

However, if you ask SmarterChild other questions you may get odd answers.

A question about SmarterChild's age yields the answer, "One year, one month, 11 days, 16 hours,

7 minutes, 47 seconds!" Asked where he lives, he replies, "In a clean room in a high-tech building in California."

SmarterChild uses the vast information on the World Wide Web as his memory bank. However, if SmarterChild wants to think and learn on his own like the boy-computer David in the film, "A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (人工智能)," he must overcome two big problems.

The first is that computers find it difficult to read Web pages because the files there are labeled (标

注) in different ways. That's why programmers need to tell SmarterChild where to look for the weather.

Another problem is that while SmarterChild can process information more accurately and faster than any human, he lacks common sense-that is, the basic connections of knowledge to reality that are obvious to any young child.

So, some researchers are trying to help computers understand the relationships between people, objects, and ideas by studying how humans access (接近) information on the Internet. They like the idea of turning the Web into a "global brain".

However, this idea upsets (使心烦) some people. They think that such an approach might reduce our freedom and individuality (个性). Others worry the Internet is becoming too powerful.

Part 4 Skimming and Scanning (Short Asnwer)

(Each item: 2)

Directions:Read the following passage. Then fill in the blanks to complete the statements that follow the passage.

Questions 66 to 70 are based on the following passage.

Time limit: 4 minutes and 12 seconds

Movie producer and director George Lucas wants people to see the best-made movie possible. So, his latest Star Wars movie was made without using film.

"Star Wars: Attack of the Clones" was made using digital (数码的) cameras. A digital camera does not use traditional film. George Lucas says that using digital cameras permits him to have much more control over the final product. For example, the images can be changed after they are placed in a computer.

Much of what is seen in the new Star Wars movie is not real. Huge buildings, spacecraft, and beings from other worlds are produced in a computer.

Movie experts say digital technology is the real future of the motion picture industry. A theater will no longer have to wait days or weeks to show a new movie. Theaters will be able to receive copies of the new movies simply by linking computers.

When the new Star Wars movie was released (发行) last month, only ninety-four theaters around the world had the digital equipment necessary to show it. So Mr. Lucas' company produced about six thousand copies of the new digital movie on traditional film for release in most theaters. Most people who have seen the movie say these film copies are of much better quality than other filmed movies. Critics say the new digital technology is very costly. Many theater owners will not buy the new technology.

The new Star Wars movie is only the beginning. They say movies may quickly become all digital.

66.The reader is encouraged to consider the filmmaker, George Lucas, as

(solitary/considerate/exploitive/creative) ______________.

67.George Lucas employed digital technology in his latest movie because

69.After reading Paragraph 5, the reader would get the impression that George Lucas is not only

an artist but also a businessman because he is _______________.

70.It can be inferred from the passage that Star Wars movie sets a new _________ trend.

Part 5 Reading Comprehension (Multiple Choice)

(Each item: 2)

Directions:Read the following passages carefully and choose the best answer from the

four choices marked A, B, C and D.

Questions 71 to 75 are based on the same passage or dialog.

Personal computers and the Internet give people new choices about how to spend their time.

Some may use this freedom to share less time with certain friends or family members, but new technology will also let them stay in closer touch with those they care about most. I know this from personal experience.

Email (电子邮件) makes it easy to work at home, which is where I now spend most weekends and evenings. My working hours aren't automatically much shorter than they once were, but I spend fewer of them at the office. This lets me share more time with my young daughter than I might have if she'd been born before electronic mail became such a practical tool.

The Internet also makes it easy to share thoughts with a group of friends. Say you do something fun-see a great film, perhaps-and there are four or five friends who might want to hear about it. If you call each one, you may tire of telling the story.

With email, you just write one note about your experience, at your convenience (方便), and address it to all the friends you think might be interested. They can read your message when they have time, and read only as much as they want. They can reply at their convenience, and you can read what they have to say at your convenience.

Email is also an inexpensive way to stay in close touch with people who live far away. More than a few parents use email to keep in touch, even daily touch, with their children off at college.

We just have to keep in mind that computers and the Internet offer another way of staying in touch. They don't eliminate (排除) any of the old ways.

71.The purpose of this passage is to ________.

A. explain how to use the Internet

B. describe the writer's joy of keeping up with new technology

C. tell the merits and usefulness of the Internet

D. introduce the reader to basic knowledge about personal computers and the Internet

72.The use of email has made it possible for the writer to ________.

A. spend less time working

B. have more free time with his child

C. work at home on weekends

D. work at a speed comfortable to him

73.According to the writer, email has a clear advantage over the telephone because email helps

one _______.

A. reach a group of people at one time conveniently

B. keep one's communication as personal as possible

C. pass on much more information than the telephone

D. get in touch with one's friends faster than the telephone

74.The passage discussed all the following elements of email EXCEPT _______.

A. its cost

B. the way of writing

C. the saving of time

D. its easy and convenient use

75.The best subject for this passage is ________.

A. Computers: New Technological Advances

B. Internet: A New Tool to Make Friends

C. Computers Have Made Life Easier

D. Internet: A Convenient Tool for Communication

Questions 76 to 80 are based on the same passage or dialog.

The earth is not the only body that travels around the sun. With it are eight other planets (行星), fellow members of the sun's family.

Two of them are nearer while the other six are farther from the sun than the earth is. The farther they are, the longer trips they make around the sun. People noticed long ago that these traveling bodies moved around in the sky in fixed paths. It is a force called gravity (重力) that holds them in their paths.

We know that every little bit of matter in the universe (宇宙) pulls upon every other bit of matter. Because the sun is so large, the pulling between the sun and the planets must be very great. If it were not for this pulling, the planets would fly off into space. In the same way there exists a pull between the earth and the moon, which keeps the moon traveling in its orbit (轨道) around our planet, the earth. Gravity holds you to the earth's surface, and pulls the ball you throw into the air back to it. Of course, the ball also pulls on the larger earth but the earth is so much larger that the pull is not noticed.

Now remember that large bodies bring to bear a greater pull on any body that contains less material. But each object in the universe, no matter how small, pulls on all other objects to some degree.

76.The earth is __________ in the sun family.

A. one of the nine fellow members

B. bigger than two of the other bodies

C. smaller than the other bodies

D. nearer than all fellow members

77.These traveling bodies __________.

A. make much longer trips when they travel around the sun

B. have the same traveling paths

C. move along certain paths around the sun

D. have their paths changed a bit

78.The gravity of every body of matter in the universe __________.

A. keeps the object traveling

B. makes it fly off into space

C. works to pull on other bodies

D. holds it to the surface

79.The pull makes the ball __________.

A. you throw into the air fall back to the earth

B. go up into the sky

C. fly around the body

D. None of the above

80.Which of the following is True?

A. The smaller matters fly off into space.

B. We do not notice the pull of the moon.

C. The moon travels around the earth because it's nearer to the earth than the other fellow

members in the sun's family.

D. The larger the bodies are, the greater their pull is.

Questions 81 to 85 are based on the same passage or dialog.

Every artist knows in his heart that he is saying something to the public. Not only does he want to say it well, but he wants it to be something which has not been said before. He hopes the public will listen and understand-he wants to teach them, and he wants them to learn from him.

What visual artists like painters want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain, because painters translate their experiences into shapes and colors, not words. They seem to feel that a certain selection of shapes and colors, out of the countless billions possible, is exceptionally interesting for them and worth showing to us. Without their work we should never have noticed these particular shapes and colors, or have felt the delight, which they brought to the artist.

Most artists take their shapes and colors from the world of nature from human bodies in motion and at rest; their choices show that these parts of the world are worth looking at, that they contain beautiful sights. Today's artists might say that they merely choose subjects that provide an interesting pattern, that there is nothing more in it. Yet even they do not choose entirely without

reference to the character of their subjects.

If one painter chooses to paint an infected leg and another a lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain part of the world, each painter is telling us something, showing us something, emphasizing something-all of which means that, consciously or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us.

81.According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. Every artist wants to say something to the public.

B. Every artist wants to teach the public.

C. Every artist wants people to learn good character from him.

D. Every artist wants to say something new.

82.Why is it difficult to explain the purpose of an artist's work?

A. Because the artist says something too new to understand.

B. Because the artist uses shapes and colors to teach you something.

C. Because the artist uses difficult words to explain his work.

D. Because the artist wants to draw something mysterious.

83.The contribution of the artist is that his work can help us _____.

A. feel the happiness that he got from the work

B. notice the shapes and colors

C. know some of his experience

D. all of the above

84.Most artists take their shapes and colors from _____.

A. nothing in particular

B. the work of other artists

C. the parts of the world that are worth looking at

D. a lake in moonlight

85.The author mentions two painters in the last paragraph in order to tell us _____.

A. each painter is trying to teach us something

B. the first painter is realistic

C. the second painter is romantic

D. their painting skills are different

Questions 86 to 90 are based on the same passage or dialog.

Both Dell and HP are offering new entertainment centers-computers that work like normal machines but are specifically tailored (特制的) to help users manage their music and photos. The next generation entertainment center, which is just now entering the market, is a computer that hooks up to (与......相联接) the TV and looks like a video recorder. Using a controller, users can record TV, play music, and show movies.

"It turns out the Internet revolution was not a technology revolution but an information and entertainment revolution," says Paul Saffo of the Institute for the Future in Menlo Park, California. "It's created a big change in how people see their world, making everything more personal."

He is by no means certain that this is entirely a good thing. "The new technology is so bewitching (迷惑人的) that it risks turning everything into entertainment ... and the lesson from Rome onwards is that all great civilizations fail by turning everything into entertainment."

He suggests that the greatest symbol (象征) of mass media was the TV. "It delivers the world to your living room, but all you can do is press your nose to the window and watch," he says.

New technology, on the other hand, makes each person more active. Recording television programs on a computer allows users to edit out commercials (商业广告) and watch the programs anytime they choose. With music, people can access one song at a time and build their own albums.

86.Which of the following adjectives is the noun "entertainment" generally related to?

A. profound

B. superficial (肤浅的)

C. provocative (挑逗的)

D. sensitive

87.With this new technology, the PC is becoming ___________.

A. a TV without commercials

B. a personal album

C. a productivity tool

D. an entertainment platform

88.The positive importance of this new technology is that it ______________.

A. puts all sorts of information in the computer

B. turns everything into entertainment

C. tailors the media to personal tastes

D. enables people to download songs

89.What does Paul Saffo mean in Paragraph 4 when he says, "...all you can do is press your

nose to the window and watch?"

A. The TV is the greatest symbol of the mass media.

B. Watching TV at home, you can know about the world.

C. People can't get addicted to TV.

D. TV turns people into passive watchers.

90.What does Paul Saffo feel about the future of technology?

A. Worried.

B. Hopeful.

C. Confident.

D. Excited.

In the United States a university professor is given a few months of freedom from his duties about every seventh year for travel or advanced study. This period of freedom from teaching is called a “study or research leave”. Its purpose is to give the professor experiences which will make him a wiser person and a better teacher when he returns to his university. Few study leaves are interesting enough to be described in national newspapers and magazines. Recently, however, there was an exception. The public learned how Dr. John R. Coleman, president of Haverford College, had spent his study leave. At the age of 51, Dr. Coleman was determined to escape from university life for a few months and to get a variety of experiences in the world of work. He especially wanted to learn about people. People who do hard physical labor were especially interesting to him. “I wanted to get away from the world of words and political matters and parties – the things a president does,” Dr. Coleman later explained to news writers. “As a college president you begin to take yourself very seriously and to think you have power you don't. You forget things about people. I wanted to relearn things I’d forgotten.” Telling no on e of his plans, Dr. Coleman started his study leave on a farm in Canada, hundreds of miles from his college. Getting up at 4:30 each morning, working thirteen hours a day in fields, he prepared himself physically for his next job, digging ditches in Atlanta, GeorgiA、 After that, the college president washed dishes ina Boston restaurant.
