Food Parts You Should Never Throw Away in the Garbage

Pineapple Core

When you carve out the core of a pineapple, don't throw it in the garbage. You can use the pineapple core for all kinds of recipes, and there are tons of vitamins and minerals hiding within. To use the pineapple core: chop it and add it to fruit salad, blend it into smoothies, cut it into cubes and freeze for later use, or simply add it to water or even tea to improve flavor.

Kiwi Skin

If you never thought you could eat kiwi in the way you eat a peach, think again. That skin really is good for you and contains a lot of vitamin C, and in fact, it's also higher in fiber than the rest of the fruit. Of course, that rough, ugly skin isn't for everyone, so if you don't like it, try adding a whole kiwi to a smoothie to hide the taste of the skin.

Banana Peel

Most of us eat the banana without giving the soft peel a second thought. Here's

why that's a mistake: banana peel contains tryptophan(色氨酸), which increases "the happiness hormone" to help with mood regulation and nerve system. There are a few creative ways to use the peel. Cook or boil for at least 10 minutes to soften. You can add it to smoothies, stir-fries, or soups. And, for a treat, simply slice and bake a banana with the skin on.

Watermelon Skin and Seed

The delicious, red inside makes for a refreshing snack or juice, but you're able to get some powerful nutrients in the skin and seeds as well. Cut out the white part under the green outside and use it in your cooking. It has vitamin C and B6, to keep you healthy. As for the seeds, you can roast them in the oven. Then add them to salads or to nut snacks.

21. Which of the following has a larger amount of fiber than its other parts?

A. Pineapple cores.

B. Kiwi skin.

C. Banana peel.

D. Watermelon skin and seeds.

22. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. All the food above can be added to smoothies.

B. Kiwi skin can be roasted in the oven.

C. Banana peel can help lift people's moods.

D. The green part of watermelon has vitamin C and B6.

23. Where can we most probably read this text?

A. In a botany instruction.

B. In a medicine brochure.

C. In a fruitarian's recipe.

D. In a nutrition report.

B

Climate change is a global problem that requires global effort, but the Cardozo family, like many in the district, are not able to wait for nations to put plans into place. They are already improving their businesses to be more climate tolerated.

Maria Cardozo owns a large cattle farm outside Inapari. Cattle farming on an industrial scale is the largest driver of deforestation in the Amazon, but even smaller-scale operations like Maria’s require clearin g several large hectares of trees.

Maria says she doesn’t have ways to the latest research on farming and climate tolerance, but she determines where she can. After seeing an informative program on an Argentinian TV channel, her team changed their fencing to allow their cattle less space to wander. It was an experiment Maria says worked: it reduced the number of calories the cattle burned and made them easier to grow in the heat.

“We haven’t lost money, but we also haven’t grown,” she says of their business over the past decade. She and her family have begun to diversify the animals they raise, adding pigs, chickens, goats and horses.

Maria’s brother Elias received 100,000 Peruvian soles (about 30,000 U. S. dollars) for his project. His plan to farm fish, instead of wild catching them, won a competition called Innovate Peru meant to help fund projects like his. In the nearby rivers, some species of fish like the larger Amazonian Paiche are being overfished, but in his fish farms, Elias can raise Paiche without threatening wild populations.

It’s Abraham Cardozo who works in the forest the most. In 2002,he founded a promising company called Maderacre that he sold in 2011. On the 220,000-hectare land, only the older trees are harvested.

My dad used to say, “When you l earn to live with the forest, you can have a good life,” says Abraham. He wants other businesses in the district to benefit from the forest, but in a way that they can continue using it forever, he says.

24. What did Maria and her team do according to the text?

A. They cut down a large number of trees,

B. They killed some cattle and changed other kinds.

C. They made limited room for the cattle to move about.

D. They decreased the number of the animals to raise.

25. Which one refers to a kind of animal?

A. Inapari.

B. Innovate Peru.

C. Maderacre.

D. Amazonian Paiche.

26. Why does Abraham Cardozo only cut down the old trees?

A. To earn much money.

B. To build large houses.

C. To keep soil undamaged.

D. To raise various cattle.

27. What is the main idea of the text?

A. How the farmers manage their businesses.

B. Why we learn to get on well with the forest.

C. What should be done to raise various cattle.

D. How the family contribute to climate change.

C

Spending time in nature improves children's academic achievement and healthy development, concludes a new analysis examining hundreds of studies.

Ming Kuo, a professor in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois, says she expected the important review to lead to more questions than answers. Instead, all signs pointed to the same outcome: “ It 's time to take nature seriously as a resource for learning,” she says. “ In fact, the trend of increasing indoor instruction in hopes of maximizing standardized t est performance may be doing more harm than good.” Kuo and her colleagues found that nature boosts learning in many ways一it helps focus attention, relieve stress, increase physical activity and fitness as well as student self-motivation and enjoyment, etc. Besides, nature creates a calmer, quieter and safer setting for learning.

While none of these effects is entirely new, the analysis has pulled for the first time all of the lines of evidence together. Collectively, the findings make a much stronger case for the importance of time in nature. They also provide an explanation for something that has been puzzling scientists — why even small doses of nature sometimes have surprisingly great effects.

These effects extend beyond academic achievement. Time in nature appears to develop personal skills and qualities important for future success, and may play an important role in helping children grow up to be environmental stewards. The analysis will surely make schools think about how to better plan their schoolyards and curricula.

“ Even small exposures to nature are beneficial. If you're indoors, having a view of your yard rather than facing the wall, that makes a difference. That’s one of the things that give us more confidence that we' re seeing a real cause-and-effect

relationship,” Kuo says. “The bigger the dose of nature we give a person, the bigger the effect we see in them.”

28. The underlined word “boosts” in paragraph 3 most probably means

.

A. promotes

B. makes... interesting

C. simplifies

D. makes...worthwhile

29. What does the text say about the analysis examining hundreds of studies?

A. Its finding is completely new.

B. It remains a puzzle to scientists.

C. Its outcome is quite convincing.

D. It results in more questions

than answers.

30. What inspiration can schools draw from the analysis?

A. They should raise their students' environmental awareness.

B. They should make all their curricula closely related to nature.

C. They should move all their students out of the classrooms.

D. They should green their schoolyards as much as possible.

31. Which of the following reflects Kuo’s opinion?

A. Indoor instruction should be stressed to improve test performance.

B. Nature has long been taken seriously as a learning resource.

C. Small exposures to nature make almost no difference.

D. When it comes to time in nature, more is better.

D

OK, so it’s not a real war — but the U.S. and China are at the beginning of a trade war thanks to President Trump’s poli cy. The Chinese government raised $34 billion in new duties on goods exported from the U.S. last week in answer to President Trump’s unwise tariffs (关税) of $34 billion on Chinese goods.

Farm and seafood-producing states are going to be hit hardest by China’s new tariffs on U.S. goods. States where cars are made and shipped to China are on the hook, as well.

In terms of value, some 38 percent of products on the tariff list are agricultural, including soybeans, sorghum, tobacco and meat. That’s nothing like g ood news for farm-belt states, primarily in the Midwest like Iowa.

A wide range of seafood is on China’s tariff list. That could hurt fishery workers in Alaska and lobster(龙虾) harvesters in Maine. Alaska, for example, exported nearly $1 billion worth of seafood to China. "China is a major market for Alaska seafood," said Alexa Tonkovich, Executive Director of the Alaska seafood Marketing Institute. "The seafood industry directly employs nearly 60,000 workers in Alaska each year and directly employs more workers than any other private industry."

And automaking states, particularly in the South, are also at risk. Some 24 percent of products on the list —in terms of value —are cars, trucks and other vehicles. Michigan alone exported $1.7 billion worth of motor vehicles and vehicle parts to China in 2017. Other states being affected include South Carolina, where BMW makes SUVs for both the U.S. and export, and Alabama, home to Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Honda and Hyundai factories.

This round of tariffs spares some industries, like commercial aircraft. Washington State could breathe a sigh of relief, which is home to Boeing. It also, for the moment, skips tariffs on chemical products.

ALexa Tonkovich has warned the U.S. government that the trade war could risk jobs, reduce industry profits, and cause higher prices for consumers in the U.S.!

32. What does the underlined phrase "on the hook" mean?

A. Caught in a difficult situation.

B. Lost in deep thought

C. Delighted in their luck.

D. Stuck in the traffic jams.

33. Which state will be hurt the least on this round of tariffs?

A. Iowa.

B. Maine.

C. Michigan.

D. Washington.

34. What is Alexa Tonkovich’s attitude towards the trade war?

A. Approving.

B. Opposed.

C. Objective.

D. Sympathetic.

35. Which of the following shows the development of ideas in the text?

A ◆Welwitschia mirabilis Title: the world’s most resistant plant It’s not pretty to look at, but welwits chia mirabilis is unique. It consists of only two leaves and a strong stem with roots. Two leaves continue to grow and the stem thickens and can grow to be almost 2 meters high and 8 meters wide. Its lifespan is 400 to 1,500 years. It can survive up to five years with no rain. The plant is said to be very tastyeither raw or baked in hot ashes. ◆Dionaea muscipula Title: the Venus Fly Trap Dionaea muscipula is the most famous carnivorous(肉食性的) plant due to the active and efficient nature of its unique trap. It may be famous, but it’s also threatened. It produces a short leaf that forms two sides of a trap. Each side contains some sensitive hairs. When it is touched two to three times, the trap will shut in less than a second, fast enough to catch flies and other insects. The leaf, once closed, produces some enzymes(酶) that slowly dissolve the insects and supply the plant with food. ◆Rafflesia arnoldii Title: the world’s largest flower Rafflesia arnoldii, the largest flower in the world, is an exotic and rare plant. The flower is 3 feet across and weighs 15-24 pounds. However, you wouldn’t want to grow it in your garden. In a rainforest-type environment, it gives off a most unpleasant smell, which is somewhat like rotten meat. This is why it is often called the Corpse Plant by some natives of Indonesia where it comes. Its flowers only last for three days to a week. ◆Euphorbia obese Title: the Baseball Plant Euphorbia obese is known as the Baseball Plant. Over-harvesting by plant collectors for its interesting and curious appearance has severely reduced the wild population. However, it has become very common now. By growing euphorbia obese in large numbers, many gardens have been working to ensure that the plants being traded and sold among plant collectors are not wild plants. 21.
