In the early nineteen fifties, researchers found that people scored lower on intelligence tests if they spoke more than one language.Research in the sixties found the opposite. So which is it?

Researchers presented their newest studies last month at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The latest evidence shows that being bilingual (双语的)does not necessarily make people smarter. But researcher Ellen Bialystock says it probably does make you better at certain skills. She says bilingual people are often better at controlling their attention—a function called the executive(执行的)control system.

Ms Bialystock is a psychology professor at York University in Toronto,Canada. She says the best method to measure the executive control system is called the Stroop Test.A person is shown words in different colors. The person has to ignore the word but say the color. The problem is that the words are all names of colors.

Her work shows that bilingual people continually practice this function. They have to,because both languages are active in their brain at the same time. They need to limit one to be able to speak in the other.

This mental exercise might help in other ways, too.Researchers say bilingual children are better able to separate a word from its meaning, and more likely to have friends from different cultures.Bilingual adults are often four to five years later than others in developing dementia or Alzheimer's disease.

Foreign language study has increased in the United States. But linguist Alison Mackey at Georgetown University points out that English-speaking countries are still far behind the rest of the world. In England, like in the United States, bilingualism is seen as something special and unique and something to be commented on and perhaps work towards, while in many other parts of the world being bilingual is just seen as a natural part of life.

1.Being bilingual can make people ______.

A. smarter than others

B. better at all skills

C. better at controlling their attention

D. higher in intelligence

2.Bilingual children more likely to ______.

A. be healthier than others

B. make more friends from different countries

C. develop dementia or Alzheimer's disease

D. recognize a word from its meaning

3.The last paragraph suggests that ______.

A. bilingualism is just seen as a natural part of life in the United States

B. foreign language study needs improving in English-speaking countries

C. bilingualism is seen as something special and unique all over the world

D. English-speaking countries do better than others in foreign language study

4.The text is most probably a ______.

A. science fiction story

B. newspaper ad

C. book review

D. science news report

根据第五段第二句话“Researchers say bilingual children are better able to separate a word from its meaning, and more likely to have friends from different cultures.” A项文中没有提及;C项是对原文的曲解;D项应该是“separate a word from its meaning”才正确。

根据最后一段“...English-speaking countries are still far behind the rest of the world.” 根据最后一句“...in many other parts of the world being bilingual is just seen as a natural part of life.”

I was born on a farm in the north of England, but my family couldn't support me.My cousin helped me get a job as a maid in a big, fancy London house. There is so much work to do and some rules to follow here.Monday is washing day.I have to get up earlier than usual—about 4:30 am—to heat the water, wash and iron the clothes. The work is hard and I earn about $ 50 a year. But my master spends $ 1000 a year on his carriage alone.

Gentleman

I'm a lawyer living in London. But I'm in love with a servant, because she's not like her own class at all,but like mine. When I take her to theatres,we meet outside, pretend not to know each other and enter by a side door.I have to maintain my honour as rules.I want to marry my girl, but maybe only in secret.

Factory man

I've been working in factories since I was 10.Right now,I make iron for the railroad. It's 14 hours a day from 5:30 am to 7:30 pm.It's hard work, but at least I have my freedom despite the fact that there are so many rules, and I have to wear a uniform.

These days,I like to have a drink and smoke my pipe in the pub with my friends from work.I go in there a couple of times a week if I can,to discuss politics, find out news and listen to music.

The whole family objected when my brother and I said we were going to spend our Christmas holidays abroad.Mother said that as there would be a family reunion party,we would have to be present.Though we always enjoyed these occasions, nothing could persuade us to stay.

Two days before Christmas,we went to a small town in southern Germany. We spent the whole Christmas Eve sightseeing. There was so much activity in the town that it led to our excitement. The streets were crowded with people and the shops were full of wonderful things. In the evening,we went to listen to Christmas songs sung by children and the brightly lit trees in the main square.

We returned to our hotel late that night, greatly looking forward to the next day when we planned to have a meal at the best restaurant in town. But in the morning the streets were deserted. To make matters worse, all the shops, including the restaurants, were shut.

We returned to our hotel, feeling very miserable. All we had was a bag of fruit which my brother had happened to buy the day before. Our thoughts sadly turned to home where,at that moment, the whole family must have been wishing us a “Merry Christmas”.

Parents often believe that they have a good relationship with their teenagers. But last summer,Joanna and Henry noticed a change in their older son:suddenly he seemed to be talking far more to his friends than to his parents.“The door to his room is always shut,”Joanna noted.

Tina and Mark noticed similar changes in their 14-year-old daughter.“She used to cuddle up(蜷伏)with me on the sofa and talk,” said Mark.“Now we joke that she does this only when she wants something.Sometimes she wants to be treated like a little girl and sometimes like a young lady. The problem is figuring out which time is which.”

Before age 11,children like to tell their parents what's on their minds.“In fact, parents are first on the list,”said Michael Riera, author of Uncommon Sense for Parents with Teenagers.“This completely changes during the teen years,”Riera explained.“They talk to their friends first, then maybe their teachers, and their parents last.”

Parents who know what's going on in their teenagers' lives are in the best position to help them.To break down the wall of silence, parents should create chances to understand what their children want to say,and try to find ways to talk and write to them. And they must give their children a mental break, for children also need freedom, though young.Another thing parents should remember is that to be a friend, not a manager, with their children is a better way to know them.

12.“The door to his room is always shut” suggests that the son______.

A. is always busy with his studies

B. doesn't want to be disturbed

C. keeps himself away from his parents

D. begins to dislike his parents

13.What troubles Tina and Mark most is that ______.

A. their daughter isn't as lovely as before

B. they can't read their daughter's mind exactly

C. they don't know what to say to their daughter

D. their daughter talks with them only when she needs help

14.Which of the following best explains “the wall of silence” in the last paragraph?

A. Teenagers talk a lot with their parents.

B. Teenagers do not want to understand their parents.

C. Teenagers do not talk much with their parents.

D. Teenagers talk a little about their own lives.

15.What can be learned from the passage?

A. Parents are unhappy with their growing children.

B. Parents have suitable ways to talk with their teenagers.

C. Parents should be patient with their silent teenagers.

D. Parents should try to understand their teenagers.

根据第一段第二句“...he seemed to be talking far more to his friends than to his parents”及下文可知十几岁的孩子同朋友谈心要比同父母多,父母往往是最后一个知道孩子心事的人。

Tina and Mark noticed similar changes in their

14-year-old daughter.”

It is often considered that the schoolyard is where bullies(欺负)go to make other kids a miserable school life, but a new study suggests that classrooms are another popular place.

The study, presented recently at the American Public Health Association's yearly meeting in Philadelphia,is based on the results of research from more than 10 000 middle school students who answered questions online.

Of those researched,43% said they'd been physically bullied within the last month.A bit more than half said they'd been laughed at in an unfriendly way,and half reported being called hurtful names.About one third said groups had excluded(排斥)them to hurt their feelings.28% said their belongings had been taken or broken;21% said someone threatened to hurt them.According to the results,two-thirds of the students said they'd been bullied in more than one way over the previous month.

The study authors mentioned that 8% of the students who answered said they'd missed school at least once during the school year because of fear of being bullied.25% said they'd taken other actions, such as missing recess(课间),not going to the bathroom or lunch, missing classes,or staying away from some area of the school to escape from experiencing a bully.

Parents and kids today dress alike, listen to the same music, and are friends. Is this a good thing?Sometimes, when Mr.Ballmer and his 16-year-old daughter,Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and talk about interests both enjoy, such as pop culture,he remembers his more distant relationship with his parents when he was a teenager.

“I would never have said to my mom,‘Hey,the new Weezer album is really great. How do you like it?’” says Ballmer.“There was just a complete gap in taste.”

Music was not the only gulf. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits(轨道).

Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families.Conversations on subjects such as sex and drugs would not have taken place a generation ago.Now they are comfortable and common. And parent-child activities, from shopping to sports, involve a feeling of trust and friendship that can continue into adulthood.

No wonder greeting cards today carry the message,“To my mother,my best friend.”

But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect for parents.

“There's still a lot of strictness and authority on the part of parents out there, but there is a change happening,” says Kerrie,a psychology professor at Lebanon Valley College.“In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents.”

Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these evolving(进化的)roles and attitudes. They see the 1960s as a turning point.Great cultural changes led to more open communication and a more democratic(民主的)process that encourages everyone to have a say.

“My parents were on the ‘before' side of that change, but today's parents, the

40-year-olds,were on the ‘after' side,” explains Mr.Ballmer.“It's not something easily accomplished(完成)by parents these days, because life is more difficult to understand or deal with, but sharing interests does make it more fun to be a parent now.”

20.The underlined word “gulf” in Para.3 most probably means ______.

A. interest

B. distance

C. difference

D. separation

21.Which of the following shows that the generation gap is disappearing?

A. Parents help their children develop interests in more activities.

B. Parents put more trust in their children's abilities.

C. Parents and children talk more about sex and drugs.

D. Parents share more interests with their children.

22.The change in today's parent-child relationship is ______.

A. more confusion among parents

B. new equality between parents and children

C. less respect for parents from children

D. more strictness and authority on the part of parents

23.By saying “today's parents, the 40-year-olds,were on the ‘after’ side.” the author

means that today's parents ______.

A. follow the trend of the change

B. can set a limit to the change

C. fail to take the change seriously

D. have little difficulty adjusting to the change

24.The purpose of the passage is to ______.

A. describe the difficulties today's parents have met with

B. discuss the development of the parent-child relationship

C. suggest the ways to handle the parent-child relationship

D. compare today's parent-child relationship with that in the past

【答案】 (1)B (2)D (3)B (4)A (5)B

【解析】(1)从该段第二句(即最后一句)中的“From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits”可知,gulf表达的是与to move in separate orbits相近的意思,“在不同的轨道运行”也就是“有距离”。

(3)从第六段中的“...family experts warn that...”

(4)第八段中提到“...the 1960s as a turning point.Great cultural changes led to more open communication...”,也就是说40多岁的人能顺应变化的趋势。

Sometimes children do not do what their parents tell them to do.When this happens,a parent tries to help the child to do the right thing. When this does not work, the parent usually punishes the child.

There are many things that a parent can do.One thing that people have done is to spank(打屁股)the child. When a parent spanks a child, they will use their hand or a hard object to strike them on their bottom. This is meant to show the child that they have done something wrong.

One parent remembers being spanked when he was a child. His parents used a wooden spoon. When he spanked his own children with his hand,he saw that he put a red mark on his child's leg.He never did that again.

One problem with spanking is that it teaches the child to hit someone when they do not like what the other person is doing.Another problem with spanking is that the parent is usually angry and can hit the child too hard.Sometimes parents will use spanking for everything and not try other ways to get the child to do the right thing.

Many parents are not sure of what to do instead of spanking. Some people think that their religion(宗教)tells them that spanking is okay. Some think that the law lets them do it.The courts(法院)say that parents have the right to teach their children how to behave.

Other things should be tried before a parent decides to spank a child.Telling the child exactly what is wanted from them can be one thing.Giving a child more than one choice is another thing that can be tried.Getting down to the child's level and taking a more child-friendly approach(方法)can help as well.

25.According to the passage, when children do something wrong, one thing that parents

usually do to punish them is to ______.

A. strike them on their bottom

B. try to help them do the right thing

C. teach them what to do

D. take them to court

26.Which of the following is NOT the problem caused by spanking?

A. It teaches the child to hit others when they offend him or her.

B. The parent may get angry and hit the child too hard.

C. Sometimes parents may use spanking for everything.

D. It makes parents try other ways to make the child do right.

27.Which of the following can best describe the writer's attitude(态度)towards spanking?

A. Favorable(赞同的).

B. Indifferent(不关心).

C. Interested.

D. Unfavorable.

28.From this passage,we can conclude(作出结论)that ______.

A. good children always do the right thing

B. parents should try their best to avoid(避免)spanking their children

C. parents have no choice but to spank their children when they do something wrong

D. children can have more than one choice to avoid being spanked

【答案】 (1)A (2)D (3)D (4)B

【解析】(1)根据第二段中“One thing that people have done is to spank(打屁股)the child.” strike them on their bottom与spank the child同义。

Everyone has good days and bad days.Sometimes, you feel as if you're on top of the world and all the questions on your maths test might seem easy. But occasionally you feel horrible, and you lose things and you cannot focus on your schoolwork.

For more than 20 years, scientists have suggested that high self-esteem(自尊)is the key to success.Kids who feel good about themselves, said scientists,do better in school and have fewer emotional(情感的)and behavioral problems than kids who have a low opinion of themselves.

Now new research shows that focusing just on building self-esteem can bring bad results if it makes you less likeable or more upset when you fail in something.

“Forget about self-esteem,” says Jennifer Crocker,a psychologist at the University of Michigan,US.“It's not the most important thing.”

Crocker's advice may sound a bit strange because it is good to feel good about yourself.

Studies show that people with high self-esteem are less likely to be depressed, anxious, shy,or lonely than those with low self-esteem.

But,after reviewing about 18 000 studies on self-esteem,Roy Baumeister,a psychologist at Florida State University, has found that building up your self-esteem will not necessarily make you a better person.

He believes that violent and wicked(邪恶的)people often have the highest self-esteem of all.He also said,“There is no evidence that kids with high self-esteem do better in school.”

All types of people have problems.People with high self-esteem can have big egos(自

我)that can make them less likeable to their peers(同龄人),said Kathleen Vohs. She is a professor of marketing science and consumer psychology at the University of British Columbia in Canada.

People with high self-esteem tend to think more of themselves,Vohs says.People with low self-esteem are more likely to rely on their friends when they need help.

29.By saying “Everyone has good days and bad days.” at the beginning of the passage, the

author means “______”.

A. everybody has the chance to succeed in doing something

B. everybody would feel good and sometimes feel terrible

C. luck plays a key point in people's lives

D. people all over the world are actually equal to have the chance to win

30.New research about self-esteem is different from old research on the point that______.

A. it has a bad effect on people's feelings

B. it is not so helpful for people to succeed

C. it only makes people less likeable or more upset

D. it often makes you fail at something

31.According to Roy Baumeister and Kathleen Vohs,______.

A. violent and wicked people did better when they were young in school

B. a better person is usually one who has low self-esteem

C. high self-esteem people often do what they like without considering others' feelings

D. most people with high-esteem will end up in crime

(2)“ Studies show that people with high self-esteem are less likely to be depressed, anxious, shy,or lonely than those with low self-esteem”和“...,Roy Baumeister,...has found that building up your self-esteem will not necessarily make you a better person.”

(3)“ violent and wicked people often have the highest self-esteem of all.”表明了Roy Baumeister的看法;Kathleen Vohs则认为,“People with high self-esteem tend to think more of themselves”。

32.“The door to his room is always shut” suggests that the son ______.

A. is always busy with his studies

B. doesn't want to be disturbed

C. keeps himself away from parents

D. begins to dislike his parents

33.What troubles Tina and Mark most is that ______.

A. their daughter isn't as lovely as before

B. they can't read their daughter's mind exactly

C. they don't know what to say to their daughter

D. their daughter talks with them only when she needs help

34.Which of the following best explains “the wall of silence” in the last paragraph?

A. Teenagers talk a lot with their friends.

B. Teenagers do not want to understand their parents.

C. Teenagers do not talk much with their parents.

D. Teenagers talk little about their own lives.

【答案】 (1)C (2)B (3)C

【解析】(1)从“he seemed to be talking far more to his friends than to his parents”可知,儿子总是关着房门是为了避开父母,不想和他们说话。

(2)从“Sometimes she wants to be treated like a little girl and sometimes like a young lady. The problem is figuring out which time is which.”

(3)文中提到,正是因为父母与子女之间隔着一堵“沉默的墙”,所以通过“create chances to understand what their children want to say,and try to find ways to talk and write to them”可以实现父母与子女的有效沟通。

“It hurts me more than you,” and “This is for your own good”—these were the statements my mother used to make years ago when I had to learn Latin, clean my room, stay home and do homework.

That was before we entered the_ permissive_ period in education in which we decided it was all right not to push our children to achieve(获得)their best in school. The schools and educators made it easy for us.They taught that it was all right to be parents who took a

let-alone(放任的,不管的)policy.Now teachers, faced with children who have been developing at their own pace for the past 15 years, are realizing we've made a terrible mistake.

One such teacher is Sharon Klompus who says of her students—“so passive(被动的)”—wonders what has happened.Nothing is demanded(要求)of them, she

believes.Television, says Klompus, causes children's passivity.“We're talking about a generation of kids who've never been hurt or hungry. They have learned somebody will always do it for them, instead of saying go and look it up,you tell them the answer. It takes greater energy to say no to a kid.”

Yes,it does.It takes energy and it takes work. It's time for parents to end their vacation and come back to work. It's time to take the car away,to turn the TV off,to tell them it hurts you more than them but it's for their own good. It's time to start telling them NO again.

35.“The permissive period”(Para.2)means a time ______.

A. when children are allowed to do what they wish to

B. when everything can be taught at school

C. when every child can be educated

D. when children are permitted to receive education

36.According to Sharon Klompus, children are becoming more passive in study because

______.

A. teachers are too strict with them

B. they have done too much homework

C. they have to fulfill too many duties

D. they watch TV too often

37.The main idea of the passage is that ______.

A. parents should leave their children alone

B. parents should say no to their children in some way

C. parents should sometimes tell their children the answers

D. parents should not let their children watch TV

【答案】 (1)A (2)D (3)B

【解析】(1)由“the permissive period in education”后的定语从句“in which we decided it was all right not to push our children to achieve their best in school”及下文的“They taught that it was all right to be parents who took a let-alone policy.”

(2)从“Television,says Klompus,causes children's passivity.”
