——An Education

The story was set in 1961 London. A schoolgirl named Jenny was in the process of preparing for Oxford when she met the older man David who pursued her romantically and eventually proposed to her. All these sudden changes led to her leaving school but realizing the truth that David was a married man.

In my op inion, Jenny’s life experience presented in the movie can be divided into three stages.Stage one involves a lot of hardworking, which is hard and boring even meaningless to the innocent Jenny. In stage two, after Jenny had met David, her life entered into a brand-new chapter—having fun. During this period, she went to Oxford and Paris for travel, attended various parties and bought all kinds of fancy clothes, accompanied by David. She was so merged into the fancy life that when David proposed to her, she accepted his propose immediately and left school without any hesitation. In stage three, after finding out that David had been married already, Jenny learnt her lesson, rethought about her life and decided to continue her study.

The key issue I would like to discuss is the meaning of education.

In the movie, after experiencing the fancy life that David provided for her, Jenny has questioned her teachers about the meaning of her education for many times.Her headmistress just answered, “Nobody does anything worth doing without a degree”.However, these words barely convinced inexperienced Jenny. In Jenny’s eyes, colorful life experience seems more important than school life.And there is no doubt that she was extremely eager to get away from all the boredom as soon as possible.

In contemporary world, the meaning of education is no longer limited to the acquisition of knowledge and skills. There are more aspects that are attached more importance to it. Education concerns more about how a boy could grow into a mature man with indestructible mind as well as extraordinary realization of his living purpose, his value of life. It broadens one’s horizons by leading him to the acknowledgement of more and more things. Moreover, education offers people a relatively equal platform to learn and an opportunity to enter into a higher status in society, a new chapter of life, even a new self.

However, it is really hard for today’s students, especially the young ones who have not

quite seen the world from different angles or in different roles, to understand these truths that are indeed beyond expression. When Jenny says“It is not enough to educate us anymore. You’ve got to tell us why you are doing it”, although I know that education is far more important than what she thought and that she was lost at that time, I can relate to some extent. As a contemporary student with critical thinking, we can no longer accept an idea without questioning before having fully experienced it. Therefore, I believe that this issue is quite something that needs further discussion for both teachers and students.
