Unit 6

The Making of a Surgeon

Paragraph 1.

How does a doctor recognize the point in time when he is finally a “surgeon”? As my year as chief resident drew to a close I asked myself this question on more than one occasion.

Paragraph 2

The answer, I concluded, was self-confidence. When you can say to yourself, “There is no

surgical patient I cannot treat competently, treat just as well as or better than any other surgeon” ---- then, and not until then, you are indeed a surgeon. I was nearing that point.

Paragraph 4

There were still situations in which I couldn’t be certain my decision has been the right one, but I had learned to accept this as a constant problem for a surgeon, one that could never be completely resolved ---- and I could live with it. So, once I had made a considered decision I no longer dwelt on it.

Paragraph 5

There were no more butterflies in my stomach when I opened up an abdomen or a chest. I knew that even if the case was one in which it was impossible to anticipate the problem in advance, I could handle whatever I found.

Paragraph 6

I knew that when I was out in practice I would inevitably err at one time or another and operate on someone who didn’t need surgery or sit on someone who did.

Paragraph 6

I could accept this fact with calmness because I knew that if I wasn’t able to avoid a mistake, chances were that no other surgeon could have, either.

Paragraph 7

He needs it to encourage him in trying moments when he’s bothered by the doubts and uncertainties that are part of the practice of medicine.

Unit 7

Not on My Block

Introduction

People thought Ethel Armstead was crazy to stand up to the young men dealing drugs outside her house. But Ethel had had enough. Summoning up her courage, she went out to talk to the gang. This is the story of what happened.

Paragraph 3

“Excuse me,” she said, startle d. “I live here.” The group of seven young men rose reluctantly, staring at her with cold, hard eyes. Once inside, Armstead locked the door and peered out the window. She was surprised to see that the men had already reseated themselves on her steps.

Paragraph 4

In coming weeks, Armstead learned that her house, long vacant, was used by drug dealers, who hid their drugs under the front steps. As a steady stream of cars and foot traffic passed by the dealers conducted business on the stoop. Addicts shot up in the path behind the house and urinated in the backyard.

Paragraph 5

Armstead had no illusions about the men who occupied her front steps. Almost every night for the ten years she had lived in the tough Oliver neighborhood of East Baltimore, she lay in bed listening to the sound of gunshots as the drug wars raged. But this house, with dealers hanging out on her stoop, was the worst.

Paragraph 17

Together they drove drug dealers off a vacant lot and built a playground. They established an extended-day program at school to keep kids off the streets. They prompted the city and local churches to step up efforts to redevelop abandoned houses.

Unit 8

Honesty: Is it Going out of Style?

Paragraph 1

After all, most students have been faced with the temptation to peek at neighbor’s test paper. And students can be hard on themselves in judging such behavior.

Paragraph 3

Several professors say they’ve dropped the traditional term paper requirement because many students buy prewritten term papers a nd they can’t track down all the cheaters anymore.

Paragraph 8

Students in the last century usually didn’t read “fun” stories. They read stories that taught moral values. Such stories pointed out quite clearly that children who lied, cheated, or stole came to bad ends.

Paragraph 13

There is some evidence that dishonesty may ebb and flow. When times are hard, incidents of theft and cheating usually go up. And when times get better such incidents tend to go down.

Paragraph 15

Many educators feel that as students gain confidence in themselves and their abilities, they are less likely to cheat. Surprisingly, some efforts to prevent cheating may actually encourage cheating ---- a person may feel “they don’t trust me anyway,” and be tempted to “beat the system.”Distrust can be contagious. But, so can trust!

Unit 9

What Is Intelligence, Anyway?

Paragraph 1

When I was in the army I received a kind of aptitude test that all soldiers took and, against a

normal of 100, score 160. No one at the base had ever seen a figure like that and for two hours they made a big fuss over me.

Paragraph 2

All my life I’ve been registering sc ores like that, so that I have the complacent feeling that I’m highly intelligent, and I expect other people to think so, too.

Paragraph 2

Actually, though, don’t such scores simply mean that I am ver y good at answering the type of academic questions that are considered worthy of answers by the people who make up the intelligence tests ---- people with intellectual bents similar to mine?

Paragraph 4

In a world where I could not use my academic training and my verbal talents but had to do something intricate or hard, working with my hands, I would do poorly.

Paragraph 4

My intelligence, then, is not absolute. Its worth is determined by the society I live in. Its numerical evaluation is determined by a small subsection of that society which has managed to foist itself on the rest of us as an arbiter of such matters.

Unit 10

Profits of Praise

Paragraph 4

And yet, while most of us are only too ready to apply to others the cold wind of criticism, we are somehow reluctant to give our fellows the warm sunshine of praise.

Paragraph 6

When one thinks of the speed with which spiteful remarks are conveyed, it seems a pity that there isn’t more effort to relay pleasing and flattering comments.

Paragraph 8

Comment is often made about activities which are relatively easy and satisfying, like arranging flower; but not about jobs which are hard and dirty, like scrubbing floors.

Paragraph 9

Mothers know instinctively that for children an ounce of praise is worth a pound of scolding. Still, we’re not always as perceptive as we might be about applying the rule.

Paragraph 10

One teacher writes that instead of drowning students’compositions in critical red ink, the teacher will get far more constructive results by finding one or two things which have been done better than last time, and commenting favorably on them.

Paragraph 12

Interestingly the brightest children were helped just as much by criticism as by praise, but the less able children reacted badly to criticism, needed praise the most.

Unit1 12 One way of summarizing the American position is to state that we value originality and independence more than the Chinese do. The contrast between our two cultures can also be seen in terms of the fears we both harbor. Chinese teachers are fearful that if skills are not acquired early, they may never be acquired; there is, on the other hand, no comparable hurry to promote creativity. American educators fear that unless creativity has been acquired early, it may never emerge; on the other hand, skills can be picked up later. 13 However, I do not want to overstate my case. There is enormous creativity to be found in Chinese scientific, technological and artistic innovations past and present. And there is a danger of exaggerating creative breakthroughs in the West. When any innovation is examined closely, its reliance on previous achievements is all too apparent (the "standing on the shoulders of giants" phenomenon). 14 But assuming that the contrast I have developed is valid, and that the fostering of skills and creativity are both worthwhile goals, the important question becomes this: Can we gather, from the Chinese and

Unit one 12 I suspect not everyone who loves the country would be happy living the way we do. It takes a couple of special qualities. One is a tolerance for solitude. Because we are so busy and on such a tight budget, we don't entertain much. During the growing season there is no time for socializing anyway. Jim and Emily are involved in school activities, but they too spend most of their time at home. 13 The other requirement is energy -- a lot of it. The way to make self-sufficiency work on a small scale is to resist the temptation to buy a tractor and other expensive laborsaving devices. Instead, you do the work yourself. The only machinery we own (not counting the lawn mower) is a little three-horsepower rotary cultivator and a 16-inch chain saw. 14 How much longer we'll have enough energy to stay on here is anybody's guess -- perhaps for quite a while, perhaps not. When the time comes, we'll leave with a feeling of sorrow but also with a sense of pride at what we've been able to accomplish. We should make a fair profit on the sale of the place, too. We've invested about $35,000 of our own money in it, and we could just about double that if we sold today. But this is not a good time to sell. Once economic conditions improve, however, demand for farms like ours should be strong again. 15 We didn't move here primarily to earn money though. We came because we wanted to improve the quality of our lives. When I watch Emily collecting eggs in the evening, fishing with Jim on the river or enjoying an old-fashioned picnic in the orchard with the entire family, I know we've found just what we were looking for. Unit two 4 Y et this stop was only part of a much larger mission for me. Josiah Henson is but one name on a long list of courageous men and women who together forged the Underground Railroad, a secret web of escape routes and safe houses that they used to liberate slaves from the American South. Between 1820 and 1860, as many as 100,000 slaves traveled the Railroad to freedom.

Unit 2 The United Kingdom Reading PUZZLES IN GEOGRAPHY People may wonder why different words are used to describe these four countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. You can clarify this question if you study British history. First there was England. Wales was linked to it in the thirteenth century. Now when people refer to England you find Wales included as well. Next England and Wales were joined to Scotland in the seventeenth century and the name was changed to "Great Britain". Happily this was accomplished without conflict when King James of Scotland became King of England and Wales as well. Finally the English government tried in the early twentieth century to form the United Kingdom by getting Ireland connected in the same peaceful way. However, the southern part of Ireland was unwilling and broke away to form its own government. So only Northern Ireland joined with England, Wales and Scotland to become the United Kingdom and this was shown to the world in a new flag called the Union Jack.
