Short Essays for Text Books

Susan lost her both two legs in an accident. For a time, she really didn’t know how to face up to the fact that she could not walk any longer.

One day, when Susan was scanning a book, she was deeply attracted by a true story, which described vividly how a disabled girl became a writer. Greatly inspired, Susan decided to read as many books as she could. What’s more, she also wanted to write a story about her own childhood. Now Susan began to believe that she finally would lead a life as a useful person.

It is not an easy thing to keep in touch with the friends far away. As for me, it is the same case.

It has been a couple of years since I left my old childhood and the friends there. For a long time I have been planning to write to them; however, things kept coming up all the time, seeming no spare time left for me. Now, as it were, I lose touch with them, but they are always on my mind. It seems to me that I am bound to try my best to keep correspondence with them in the future.

It is hard to imagine how our forefathers did without so many conveniences brought about by modern technology. At that time, only a small proportion of people enjoyed some comforts, most of them without enough meals, not to speak of the privilege of education. However, a lot of people reprove modern technology, saying that it brings many a problem. They want to slow down the rate of improving. But nobody can prevent the time’s developing. What we can do is make a smart decision on which direction technology develops in.

After graduation Tony decided to open a company on his own. In the beginning many banks turned down his loan requirements, but he did not lose heart, proceeding to call on bankers one by one for help. There was one who was deeply moved by his strong determination and optimistic spirits, finally agreeing to loan to him. Now he has become a rich merchant. On talking of his amazing achievements, he put emphasis on the importance of creating opportunities instead of awaiting them.

This morning I heard from my portable radio a piece of interesting news: a man, aged 36, takes the same class with his ten-year-old son, competing with each other for high marks.

The case goes like this. The man is called Li Wei, who used to be too idle to learn anything in childhood. As neither receiving adequate education nor mastering useful skills, he found it difficult to earn enough to support the family. His living experience now has driven him home a sense that he must at first acquire knowledge before accumulating fortune. So Li Wei swore that he would go to school together with his son and work hard at his lessons.

I consider it worthwhile trying to summarize the experience in learning English. Here, I would like to refer to three relevant points.

First, wide reading should be viewed as a priority in the learning process because it is through reading that we obtain the most language input. Next, it is also very important to learn by heart as many well-written articles as we can. On the one hand, rote learning is indeed of no help, but on the other hand, memorization with a good understanding will certainly do good to us. With an enormous store of excellent articles in our mind, we will find it easy to express ourselves in English. Finally, it is critical that we should put what we have learnt into practice. By doing more reading, writing, listening and speaking, we will be able to accomplish the task of improving our English.
