Passage 2

Some British and American people like to invite friends for a meal at home. You should not be upset(不安的)if your English friends don’t invite you home. It doesn’t mean they don’t like you.

Dinner parties usually start between 7 and 8 p.m. and end at about 11. Ask your hosts what time you should arrive. It’s polite to bring flowers, chocolates or a bottle of wine as a gift.

Usually the evening starts with drinks and snacks. If you want to be very polite, say how much you like the room, or the pictures on the wall. But remember-it’s not polite to ask how much things cost.

In many families, the husband sits at one of the table and the wife sits at the other end. They eat with their guests.

You’ll probably start the meal with soup or something small, then you’ll have meat or fish with vegetables, and then dessert followed by coffee. It’s polite to finish everything on your plate and to take more if you want it.

Passage 10

We all know that the British people love their manners. They are part of their national identity (特性), as well as having fish and chips and complaining about the weather. Recently I read online that they said “sorry”up to eight times a day.

After some research I have not been able to find any specific reasons why they are like this. I suppose, for centuries, manners, including how they behave at table and talk to other people have been one of the differences between the lower and upper classes and those manners show their social classes. Britain has traditionally been a quite conservative (保守的) country. There are many articles suggesting that their seemingly polite attitude of always saying “please”and “thank you”is quite false because it is impossible for a person to always feel that he or she wants to

thank someone or say “please”.

Maybe it is for this reason that people are going one of two ways:they are too polite and hold back their feelings or they are not polite at all and express their true feelings directly. Some British people are tired of pretending that they are always happy and having to please others. But sometimes because they feel they have to be polite, they are prevented from saying what they truly think.

Passage 16

Although English is not as old as Chinese, it is spoken by many people around the world every day. English speakers are always making up new words, and we are often able to know where most come from.

When some Americans saw them eating round pieces of beef, they asked the Germans what they were. The Germans didn’t understand the question and answered, “We come from Hamburg.”One of these Americans owned a restaurant, and had an idea. He cooked some round pieces of bread with beef in them and started selling them. Such bread came to be called “hamburgers”. Today, “Hamburgers”are sold in many countries around the world.

Passage 21

An American friend has invited you to visit his family. You've never been to an American's home before, and you are not sure what to do. Don't worry! When you're the guest, you should make yourself at home.

The question of whether or not to bring a gift often gives guests a headache. In American culture, it's not a must-do thing to bring .present. Of course, some people do bring some small gifts like flowers, candies or一if the family has small children-toys. If you choose not to bring a gift, don't worry. No one will even notice.

American hospitality(好客)begins at home. Most Americans agree that good home cooking beats restaurant food any day. When invited for a meal, you might ask.

"Can I bring anything?" If it's not a potluck, where everyone brings a dish, the host will possibly answer, "No, just yourself.”For most informal dinners, you can just wear comfortable clothes. Remember to arrive on time, or call to tell your hosts that you may be late.

During the dinner conversation, it's polite to say the food is nice. After dinner, you can help clear the table or wash the dishes. But since you are the guest, your hosts may not let you. Instead, they may invite everyone to move to the living room to drink some tea or coffee. If the hosts are not smokers, you shouldn't smoke in their house. And, above all, don't go around looking at the house if you are not invited. After about an hour of chat, it's time to say good-bye. You don't want to wear out your welcome.

北京中考英语阅读理解训练及解析

北京中考英语阅读理解训练一 Want a glance of the future of health care? Take a look at the way the various networks of people about patient care are being connected to one another, and how this new connectivity is being exploited to deliver medicine to the patient —no matter where he or she may be. Online doctors offering advice based on normal symptoms(症状) are the most obvious example. Increasingly, however, remote diagnosis(远程诊断) will be based on real physiological data(生理数据) from the actual patient. A group from the University of Kentucky has shown that by using personal data assistance plus a mobile phone, it is perfectly practical to send a patient's important signs over the telephone. With this kind of equipment, the cry asking whether there was a doctor in the house could well be a thing of the past. Other medical technology groups are working on applying telemedicine to rural(countryside) care. And at least one team wants to use telemedicine as a tool for disaster need—especially after earthquakes. On the whole, the trend is towards providing global access to medical data and experts' opinions. But there is one problem. Bandwidth(宽带) is the limiting factor for sending complex(复杂的) medical pictures around the world — CT photos being one of the biggest bandwidth users. Communication satellites may be able to deal with the short-term needs during disasters such as earthquakes or wars. But medicine is looking towards both the second-generation Internet and third-generation mobile phones for the future of remote medical service. Doctors have met to discuss computer-based tools for medical diagnosis, training and telemedicine. With the falling price of broadband communications, the new technologies should start a new time when telemedicine and the sharing of medical information, experts' opinions and diagnosis are common. 1. The writer chiefly talks about _______. A. the use of telemedicine B. the on-lined doctors C. medical care and treatment D. communication improvement 2. The basis of remote diagnosis will be _______. A. personal data assistance B. some words of a patient C. real physiological information D. medical pictures from the Internet 3. Which of the following statements is true according to the text? A. Patients don't need doctors in hospitals any more. B. It is impossible to send a patient's signs over the telephone. C. Many teams use telemedicine dealing with disasters now. D. Broadband communications will become cheaper in the future. 4. The “problem” in the fourth paragraph refers to the fact that _______.

(英语)中考英语阅读理解专项训练及答案 一、英语阅读(日常生活类) 1.阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C三个选项中选出最佳答案。 If you look at the top of your phone, you'll usually see a little symbol that says 3G or 4G. The "G" stands for the "generation" (代)of your mobile network. But the symbols will become things of the past after 5G networks fully arrive. On March 30, Shanghai vice-mayor Wu Qing made the first 5G video call on a Huawei Mate X Smartphone. Shanghai has also become the first city in China to start testing 5G networks. About 100 times faster than 4G networks, 5G will let people download and upload data(数据) faster than ever before. But 5G won't just bring faster mobile internet. People can use it for many other things as well. For example, 5G will help to make self-driving cars safer. Today's self-driving test cars have one problem-lag(延迟). When the car "sees" an obstacle(障碍物), it sends this information to a data center and receives instructions, However, it will be some time before it sends and receives this information. With this kind of lag, the cars might crash because they don't receive instructions in time. With 5G, this lag will be greatly lowered, making the cars safer. 5G could also be used to power the internet of things (IoT), that is, a large online network that connects all things and people. Fast internet speeds will be the key to developing this technology. The IoT could be used in a lot of ways. For example, with IoT, your refrigerator could automatically (自动地) place an order online for eggs when it finds that there are no eggs left inside. (1)Which city was 5G tested for the first time? A. Beijing. B. Shanghai. C. Shenzhen. (2)What can we infer(推测) according to the passage?. A. 5G is widely used in China now. B. 5G networks will make our lives more convenient. C. There are no symbols at the top of our phones. (3)The writer uses self-driving cars as an example to . A. explain how 5G's fast speed can be helpful B. warn about the possible dangers of self-driving cars C. explain how self-driving cars work (4)What is IoT according to the passage? A. A robot that can do housework. B. An online store where you can buy anything. C. A large online network that connects things and people. (5)Which sentence is right according to the passage?
